Watch: Big Ulus and Balangan

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

The first of two oversize swells hit Bali last week, making landfall on Wednesday and peaking on Thursday. The Rip Curl Cup was run in perfect Padang Padang, and every south and west facing coast was battered by the long range swell.

Here we have two videos from the swell, both raw and posted with minimal editing - you might like it that way.

The first filmed is at Uluwatu and the second just down (up?) the coast a bit at Balangan where the swell is slightly smaller but better shape. Old mate in the helmet and what looks like a Webster Desert Storm jags a number of good rides.

Pretty sure old mate on the DS was out on all the good days I had at Ulus last year. An 8' something and about 4" think from memory. Charged hard and was super friendly.

This footage makes me weak at knees.

This channel has the best edits/footage from bali. Balangan at size looks a lot better than not, usually super sectiony although still pretty fun. That dude at the end who beached it and ripped the rashie off is epic.

dandandan, pretty sure I saw you last year having a crack at pretty big ulus, didn't catch any rides although saw you miss the cave and somehow survive the jagged Cliffside to sneak back in haha (if that was you)

Could've been! The only time I missed the cave last year was when my leash snapped so I had to swim in. I reckon I scrambled up the very last bit of shelf before I would have had to give up and go to Padang haha.

It definitely was then haha, good work scrambling in it was looking a bit dicey for a second there.

Strangely I was pretty chill about it, though very thankful I didn't have to do the swim. Got my board back in perfect condition too! And I'll have to correct you on not getting any waves that day: as you can see from this photographic evidence I was clearly charging so hard I had to have a lie down mid wave haha.

whoops my bad meant I didn't see any of your rides, just being out there at size is admirable in my eyes anyway. Hope you manage to snag a few soon

Great watching without the doof doof.
Could have sneaked high and got a nice keg at 2.30.

The rashie removal to run up the beach is my favourite move of the year!!!
The DS definitely has a lot of lateral momentum across the lower section of the wave which really helped old mate eat up sections others seemed to struggle with.

Was that guy in a single fin?

Could be the extra length of straighter rail providing the projection.
That bottom 1/3 of the wave is where singles work their magic

And here's Impossibles on the same day. Damn, it looks good.

So nice to watch unedited footage without music. To see surfers paddle for a wave and not catch it, etc. Great channel.

Totally agree. When will filmmakers twig that this is what surfers actually want to watch?

goofyfoot Tuesday, 24 Jul 2018 at 06:16 am new

That’s looks unbelievably fun, and agree with the unedited footage. Fantastic stuff

Big fire at Uluwatu on the Balibelly cam.
Seen best from Bingin cam

dandandan Monday, 23 Jul 2018 at 05:14 pm new

I hear you. Got a brand new 8 foot Mitchell Rae sitting at home. I feel like it is judging me every time I look at it.

Not everyone’s cup of tea, but I love that place at size.

Spuddups Tuesday, 24 Jul 2018 at 05:43 am new

Yeah, over six foot and it really comes into it's own.

goofyfoot Monday, 23 Jul 2018 at 07:56 pm new

Nice to see commenter Mango C aka Mango Manny featuring in a cameo longboard session at Balangan
