Watch: Outsized Ulus from the cliff

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

You've seen 101 iPhone clips of the big day at Ulus, so howsabout some footy from a proper camera, one that doesn't double as a phone and timepiece?

Here's eight or so minutes filmed from the clifftop, a quarter of that time taken up with just two waves, plus a screamer from old mate lidder, and a few paddle attempts. Yeah, the editing is raw but you get an idea of how vast and complex the lineup was.

Is there any footage or evidence of anyone actually successfully paddling into one of those beasts?.... you can see the pace on those waves.....mother nature is a beast sometimes!

There's a little around, but not much.

So who gets the Swellnet naming rights to the swell?
Is it the Eloy or Lorenzo swell?
The Johnny D swell for his paddle in?
Or maybe also in memoriam like the Muzza swell it could be the Wayne Deane swell...

stunet Friday, 27 Jul 2018 at 01:38 pm new

I vote the Lorenzo Swell based simply on how cool it sounds.

Is that the longest giant wave ever surfed? Has to be. Just an amazing bit of footage from a Zilla and a Ruski(???) and the WSL nowhere in site. Gee, the surf ranch is looking really exciting with all those reverse airs!

Skegs, I never heard that before.

I surfed impossibles on the 19th July in the arvo on the previous swell the Padang contest was on and that was solid enough for me. This next swell was just another level, actually glad I was not around for it. Funny how all the name big wave surfers went to Sumatra instead of old school Ulus. Did they blow it? I think so. The quality of the big waves here baffels me. From 3ft to 20ft this place is quality stretch of reef. I'm actually quietly glad that a select few amateur no-name surfers were the ones who hung around on bali to get the biggest waves of this swell - so far. Pics of waves further afield look cleaner and more perfect but it's just not Ulus. But I reckon there might of been more than a handful of epic waves most likely breaking empty around Indo on this swell that we will not even know about. Except by those adventurous few who kept their stories to themselves, making them all the more potent and special - I raise a bintang to these warriors.

Well done, Mishad.
How big a board were you on. Did you paddle out from Padang or Bingin?

Mishad Saturday, 28 Jul 2018 at 08:12 am new

Island Bay, I was on a 7'2" and it wasn't big enough. To be fair I didn't catch many. It was intimidating when the big ones came through and copped more than 1 set on the head. I did the old paddle for the 1st wave of a set, miss it and cop the rest on the head. I paddled out from in front of Impossibles bombie from the beach and got sucked out over the shallow ledge there during a lull. Right before i paddled out I checked hairline fractures either side of the leash plug pin so my confidence in my equipment dropped immediately, probably has something to do with not catching many waves and not wanting to risk lose my board. Would of been a long and shit swim in, and I had to leave that arvo to catch a flight, but wanted to get a couple aswell. Makes me feel weak as piss compared the what the guys were catching out at Ulus. I think equipment makes all the difference to your mind set, plus fitness, and ability of course.

Good on you for having a crack at it, Mishad.

I can answer that question for you Island Bay: He paddled from Padang or Bingin. Hope this helps. Seriously though those are some man sized waves!

I knew you'd sort it out for me, Spud!
