Watch: Tyler Newton // Nias

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

When the Indian Ocean lit up late last month, a stream of the world's best big wave surfers made their way to Nias. Reports on the ground put the number in the lineup at between 50-70 surfers, the majority stickered up and looking to service their social accounts.

So it was a surprise to find out how few waves were ridden, with even fewer made. A testament to how heavy the swell was.

Perhaps the surfer with the best strike rate was Tyler Newton. This vid shows plenty of Tyler's waves from the 'Captain Timmy' swell plus the swells before and after it.

Some great waves. Does anyone make this backhand ? I'm sure they do, but never see a clip of anyone going goofy and making it.

I know there is a local goofy foot kid that chargers and makes big tubes, he even surfs indicators and gets barrelled.

His name is Anton and he didn't surf that swell or the one after that on the Monday.

Kirk Flintoff was doing the goofy footers proud on the first few days. Not sure of any clips with him though

Nice vid but surely this swell has to go down as one of missed opportunities for the pro's....surely there would of been any number of other waves going banana's that they could of hooked into....I still cant see why they all converged on Nias

Yeah its a pity we are not seeing more footage of other waves from this swell, seen plenty of sick photos from Mentawai's, Telos, Hinakos.

Bawa pics looked crazy like true Hawaiian in size and shape.

That music was nearly as bad as that crap in the recent Anthony Walsh clip. Thank goodness for the mute button.

"50 -70 mostly stickered up looking to service their social account"
That is fusing disgusting pricks should get a job digging fucking holes!
Footage of nias doesn't do the amount of water moving over the shelf justice, making it look soft and easy. I can understand why so few waves were ridden but being out there wooda been something else completely
