Watch: Eli Olson // Outer reef session

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

Last week, while many of the world's best big wave surfers were getting spitballed from Jaws, Eli Olson hitched a ride to the outside reefs of Oahu. Running safety was an injured John John, who also provided lineups and offered between set pep talks.

Zoomed out raw footage is so much better than anything else.

Yep - so true. I've always loved films that show the wave rolling in, and the decisions people make in positioning and line. Gives you a better sense of being there, the anticipation of watching a line of swell move in and thinking "holy shit, what is this thing going to do..."

Yeah totally! I want to see the whole wave

JJF surfing Pipe? Big brace still on the knee...

maybe just being cautious given he might get thrown off the ski and can't afford to tweak it? partial tear is gonna be a liability no matter what. I hope it doesn't become one of those psychological injuries where he is forever afraid to hurt it again and keeps himself contained... it would be a shame to see him ride out his career as a winged eagle....

left is Himalayas, right is outer Logs, from what they said.

young guys charging, old men on skis.

Of course, back in the day, those old men on skis used to paddle out from the beach, surf those waves, and then paddle back home.

Justint Tuesday, 4 Dec 2018 at 05:42 am new

Exactly. And they would have pulled in too.
Nice shoulder riding by the younger guys

Justint You get a couple out there?

I think that was epic, Eli was charging

JJF on the left a couple of years ago, think from memory he said that it was the biggest tube he’s ever been in. The sequence is nutty

Those waves, while incredibly large, seem quite approachable compared to Jaws or Nazare at least
