There seems to be a pattern forming here. Between Drag on one hand, and 88 Surfboards on another, two new softboard companies, and I could probably include others if I could recall their names, is a collective skewering of norms. Even standing up on a board is now seen as a conformist act, though the alternatives do entertain.
The latest clip from 88 Surfboards is a ten minute affair that, depending upon how productive you've been today, may be worth your time. Stars Ari Browne, Liam Gibney, plus other sliders famous and not.

Jeez they cut it fine at spectators......perfect boards for the pass imo less people going to hospital.Been thinking about getting a softie but wouldnt know which one ,probably a drag one but anyone with any suggestions?

Do you call that riding side saddle ?

Reminds me of the side slipper era. 5'8" double ender, tiny single fin, hard edge rails, spinning every which way.
Wonder if it be possible for manufactures to make a more refined high performance soft board?
Ive wondered that too. If you look at them it's usually the bottom edge of the rail, where the deck surface meets whatever material they're using on the bottom, that lets them down. To fuse the two they end up with a sharp edge running the length of the board. Get ride of that and they could be good boards.
Almond R-series are probably the most high performance soft boards.
They don’t flex nearly as much as anything else we’ve tried, and have very solid fin box’s that you use futures in.
I think a shape with a narrower tail that’s a thruster would go alright.
Cant see the thruster one...they look good, but i think the Mick fanning ones look better shape wise.
Yeah, sorry for the confusion they don’t make a thruster. Just like you were saying their technology with a better shape could be really good.
We’ve surfed the quad a lot and it’s a great softie. Just probably more in line with Almonds longboard/alternate ethos than a performance shape.

I got one of the MF softies.....it's very stiff, you can easily surf it "properly".

So what size board have you got FR?.....do they paddle easier than say a similar size short board?
I've got a 6'0" Beastie, basically a double ender design.
surfs good, paddles OK.
I've never felt up an MF foamy, however I've just checked the website and the construction looks far better than other foamies (fibreglass underneath foam) with sophisticated designs - single to double concaves etc. Comes with a price tag of course.
I didn't realise they are that refined already concaves etc, the "Little Marley" looks the bomb
Softech in Aus are doing a few different things. In kahoots with FCS somehow - owned by the same parent company I think. I bought a "Bomber" and a Kyuss King fish. Performance? Nah - nowhere near in the same league as traditional fibreglass boards, but a hoot in a shorey or crap conditions. Kids love them too. as a clip, id have to say that drags' vapeshifters smoke this- esp chippa's slaying, but it's sick to see the finless carnage nevertheless. the sidesaddle is on... Imo the whole movement has a 70s/80s/90s sandy beach vibes (as far as I understand it) - riding doors and bin lids into shories. it could potentially be the saving grace of surfing. what's that thing called.. fun?

The softies are a good solution to the crowds at the pass, however I cannot but help think the generational shift might be passing these guys by. I saw two Gen Z kids out at Grove with an inflatable Unicorn a couple of days ago...
