Watch: Weird Waves // Great Lakes

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

This new series from Vans gets off to a great start with host Dylan Graves' laidback narration offset by the exuberant bro chatter of Burton Hathaway. Two days on the shores of Lake Superior sees them score a number of good waves, none of which are likely to suffer overcrowding through exposure.

I'm never complaining about our winters again. That dude was a frother "DUDE!!!

the-u-turn Thursday, 10 Jan 2019 at 09:57 am new

Brilliant. I could watch this over and over again. Not for the waves, but to just watch the stoke of the local community showing off their 'how good is this' to visitors. I'd have Burton Hathaway with me on any sojourn. He's a 14yr old grommet in a grown man's body (proud as punch). I'll take this video over perfection thanks. Loved it.

I completely agree with you. One of the best clips I’ve seen in ages. Can you imagine those guys hooking up with Mason Ho for a surf trip? Maybe throw in that guy Ben Gravy from New Jersey and perhaps even Ross Clarke-Jones and that would be a clip of earth shattering stoke levels.

Such a contrast to that recent clip of those Hawaiian big wave guys in Japan chasing Curren’s wave. They were so jaded, entitled and lacking Stoke that it sucked my energy away just watching it.

I'm with you Spudups. Give me enthusiasm any day. You're spot on.

As someone who's surfed in snow both in Denmark and here in NZ - and loves surfing barely rideable, ultra obscure semi waves - I applaud this.

The MIDdleman. Thursday, 10 Jan 2019 at 10:21 am new

Worth watching just for the stoke.
I hope we have all been in that "Tunnel" before.

my canadian wife even winced when i said "winter, lake superior". you think they are gnarly dudes for going surfing in that water? they are gnarly dudes just for walking the 10 metres out the back door to the pick-up truck.

i've just spent six months there. mainly on lake huron. i met up with the surfers in toronto (there is a surf shop -- surf the grates. a young guy there is shaping boards). most of them have spent a fair time out here surfing.

in summer, lake superior is so, so beautiful. i spent my time in an old cabin on a little rocky island on lake huron. the long days were filled with paddling canoes around seeing beavers, bears and moose everywhere. best holiday i've ever had....but only in summer. this is how you make it through the winter... greenjayexpress.com

Fuck that sounds nice

freeride76 Thursday, 10 Jan 2019 at 11:21 am new

whats the water quality like in Lake Superior?

chook Thursday, 10 Jan 2019 at 12:21 pm new

lake superior is crystal clear. lovely deep blues. it's pretty far north and is in mainly wilderness.
lake erie is the one that caught fire in the 70s. it's still a bit dodgy, being small and shallow.

thinking of giving it a go?

indo-dreaming Thursday, 10 Jan 2019 at 12:38 pm new

This is like North West Coast Tassie on steroids both in swell and temperature....and similar stoke as a grommet.

freeride76 Thursday, 10 Jan 2019 at 01:13 pm new

nah Chook.

probably need more than this lifetime to get through all the warm water waves.

cold water is a young mans game.

Agitator Thursday, 10 Jan 2019 at 05:33 pm new

AHAHAHAHA AWWWWWSOME!!!!!

UserMick Thursday, 10 Jan 2019 at 07:32 pm new

Ardi100 Thursday, 10 Jan 2019 at 09:15 pm new

Puts summer slop into perspective.

n!ck Thursday, 10 Jan 2019 at 09:50 pm new

Sensational vid, thanks. I loved the adventure and the stoke, to me this is what surfing is all about and i could watch vids like this all day long. Loved it.

I was "DUDED" out in first 2 mins!

mundies Friday, 11 Jan 2019 at 08:11 am new

My toes got hyperthermic today in dry snowboard boots @ -15+ degrees in Switzerland, let alone getting wet in the lake. The only thing I can experientially relate to is icicles in the beard. That is seriously committed. Run for the hills...

alexhoch1 Friday, 11 Jan 2019 at 02:11 pm new

Super cool clip. Check the icicles hanging from the hoods. Ridiculous.

velocityjohnno Friday, 11 Jan 2019 at 07:03 pm new

Awesome. The mittens they put on (like snowboard mittens) with the wetties were interesting. Also the size of the lefts they surfed, on a lake. Wow.

Indo I spent time in winter on N Coast Tassie armed only with a 3/2 and it was like being stabbed all over every duck dive. Locals were great, waves were intermittent and setups were incredible.

This would be in a different league entirely.

"Victory at Lake" - that's a keeper!

RJC6-Tas_kiwi Friday, 11 Jan 2019 at 09:04 pm new

Great to see the Stoke of them lake surfers. Cold water takes way more energy but always lots of waves with less surfers out.

keeif Friday, 11 Jan 2019 at 09:21 pm new

Cmon Lake Eildon get some waves

Karlsberg Friday, 11 Jan 2019 at 09:44 pm new

Similar vibe here in Mackay, with long flat spells between waves everyone is just stoked to get some even if its mostly only short period windswell. I'll take our stingers over that cold weather any day:)

warddy Sunday, 13 Jan 2019 at 09:10 am new

Bnkref Sunday, 13 Jan 2019 at 12:02 pm new

So much froth in that. Great clip.

offshoreozzie Thursday, 17 Jan 2019 at 06:38 am new

This is my reality now I'm living near Toronto, CA.
It's fucking cold, hard work - the period and sweep at a lot of spots are challenging. It's a fickle bitch. Waves and then gone in hours and if the forecast is off a little it's skunking time. It's better than not surfing.
Burton is a classic - never met him.

chook Thursday, 17 Jan 2019 at 11:53 am new

offshore...you surfing the bluffs?
it's fucking cold, hard work just walking down the street in TO in winter, let alone surfing. the lake surfing just never seemed worth it to me. i'd planned on doing regular trips to costa rica as it is only a five hour flight away from toronto. but i took up curling instead. i figure go with what a place is good at rather than fight to make it what it isn't.
keep your stick on the ice!

offshoreozzie Thursday, 17 Jan 2019 at 01:31 pm new

Hey chook - nah, tend not to surf bluffs - just a couple of the "better" spots only or I don't surf.
Haha - I really don't blame you. So much work, so little reward most times :)
Nicaragua is better than CR i think if you're still around and planning a trip. I've gone down there (and originally CR) kinda regularly and got good waves.

chook Friday, 18 Jan 2019 at 11:47 am new

ah,..no one told me about the better spots.
i'm back in sydney now.

Pjhawko Thursday, 17 Jan 2019 at 07:17 am new

How sick was that dude!!! He was soooo stoked!!!!! Oh my GOD, what a legend!!!
