Watch: Kirra continued

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

Following the relatively unattended morning session at Kirra, here's the PM shift which was equally as impressive.

The range of styles around the barrel is fascinating. From the timeless hands-behind-the-back showmanship on the first wave, to the goofy on the black-railed board pumping like Occy and slotted like NPJ, there's also the classic arm drag stall, its offspring the double-hander, and the functional delayed bottom turn to tail-stall.

Each wave is a carbon copy of the wave before it but the styles are anything but.

PS: Only two drop ins!

PPS: Yesterday's opening three-banger was Ryan 'Turtle' Grey.

The water was actually pretty warm. A little fresh from the wind, but I did 3.5 hours in boardies and a T (I'm from Byron). Most I spoke to were cooking in full length rubber. Plenty of paddling required to keep you warm...

That’s me in that one, water’s still above 21. Under 20 and I’ll pull the steamer out.

You're selling Turtle short. I counted four.

How good was that rainbow!

Island Bay Tuesday, 2 Jul 2019 at 02:58 pm new

Sweet Jesus, those were good waves!

Simon Perrow Tuesday, 2 Jul 2019 at 04:32 pm new

Only two recorded drop ins... hahahaha... they were going down left right and centre outside this footage. Typical associated carnage.

Are you from Far Kurnell (2231) timp?

Nah, I was from down the road, but it became the oft-heard remark when some of those wonderful reefs out there were working.

Tubes are the best thing ever.

mr mick Tuesday, 2 Jul 2019 at 07:55 pm new

Loved the little hurrah at 1:20 from old mate to the drop in. And always thought the hands behind the back as a bit of a wank, but maybe that's just me. Great waves!

The MIDdleman. Wednesday, 3 Jul 2019 at 02:35 pm new

If you can do it with your hands behind your back....it is just you.

mr mick Wednesday, 3 Jul 2019 at 04:24 pm new

HAHA, what the barrel or ...... the wank,... just wondern"

Kirra's looking more like Kirra than it has since it was Kirra.

I liked not seeing that distracting massive rip curl logo on the leg of the wetties. Mick should go 'clean skin' and ditch the advertising. Although he appears to do good in society, we all know he's intermingled with rip curl, and therefore, rip curl don't need to shove it in everyones face. Its just distracting.
On the upswing, dig seeing the differing cleans' styles in perfect waves.

memlasurf Wednesday, 3 Jul 2019 at 02:39 pm new

They are really good waves and a sand bottom to boot. Wonder what the sweep was like.

lost Wednesday, 3 Jul 2019 at 08:34 pm new

Does everyone really need all that rubber ?

Some those waves look hypnotic but the odd broken board probably tells the real story.

JackStance Thursday, 4 Jul 2019 at 11:15 am new

Hi Stu,
I'm wondering if you know if Rip Curl have moved their manufacturing out of the slave labour factories in North Korea?

Rip Curl were quick to put the kybosh on that, putting the blame on a contractor who outsourced the garments - modern manufacturing, eh? - and promising to overhaul their supply chain.

Lucky bastards!

I have for year's called the hands behind the back the 'old man layback'. Don't know it by any other name.
