Indeed. Single fins are fun n all, but if you had the choice, why not use more fins on such a critical wave? Once rode a old '77 single fin out at Burleigh because I was really into building style and understanding of the power pocket at the time, a guy came up to me and said "why are you riding that piece of shit!?", and he was right.. I get why Kelly Slater was so frustrated when it became fad to re-visit all the old designs.
Yet the same Kelly Slater thinks Steph Gilmore should ride a twinnie (outdated design) in comps. And Steph arguably looked better on a single (in Spirit of Akasha), than on a thruster.
What I mean is that sometimes another board is just the ticket.
Maybe it felt good mate...
Kelly is really good at complimenting people -he's a nice guy, one of the reasons the surf-industry made him into the face of surfing. But do you see him riding old stuff? No, he's innovating constantly, as with most all the other shapers of the original "shortboard revolution" era.
No doubt that single fins feel good and help to build surfing skill, but it's not the 1970's, and so it's strange to see someone take one all the way to Indo in place of a something more advanced. I mean, even thrusters are becoming outdated.
