Watch: John John Florence // Tahiti from below

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

OK, more outtakes from the JJF back catalogue, chosen by JJF himself while his ligaments stitch together.

This time a gin-clear session in Tahiti with Koa Rothman and Bruce Irons.

Check the air drop at the 50 sec mark plus, John's clean through-the-back pull out at the 2 minute mark.

That's unreal! Tells so much about the mechanics of surfing, besides that, gives a whole different perspective on the experience.

I watched it pretending I was underwater at Palmy Artifical Reef.

Cool.

Having surfed there (24 years ago) - its just so hard to pull through the back of the wave, so much power. I just ended up being thrown in front of the wave. JJF does it so effortlessly. Even duck diving the shallow reefs is a nightmare - he so calm.

Best vid in yonks. Mesmerising. Emphasises why fins matter too.

I reckon the 'standing island pull-out' is a bit of a lost art.

When I was young, it was a skill that really separated the top level surfers from the also-rans.

And that's simply inner space at about 3.10-3.20, absolute magic.

Best clip I have seen for years if not ever, the underwater aspect gives such a unique angle with what happens below the water especially with the surfers watching as well

On a big 4k tv it looks insane and a cool soundtrack too, absolutely beautifully made clip with great editing

obviously can’t surf. ditches his board at 3:55

I just love those underwater visions.

Should be more of that stuff in videos.

Anyone game to do XXXL waves?

Larry Haynes, Tahiti Sept 2005.

Not so easy to film from underneath.

Try watching in slow 0.25x speed ... whole other level. Adjust in YouTube "settings", 'playback' speed.

You may get an idea about how rails and fins work on boards too!

On a big screen, it's pretty mesmerizing at normal playback, once I slowed it down, the whole movement of water and board took on another level.
