Watch: Brett Barley // Biggest Skeleton Bay ever

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

Right, first things first, the vid is titled the way it is cos that's what Brett Barley called it. There are some big waves in it, see the opening 'close out' wave, but as for actual waves ridden? I'm sure I've seen Skeleton Bay bigger.

Secondly, there's a boatload of filler shots: Brett walking onto a plane, Brett behind the wheeel of a car, Brett talking to camera - lots of talking to camera. Maybe you like this, maybe you don't, but you've been forewarned so either sit back and enjoy it or start skipping.

It's 35 minutes long, the surfing starts somewhere around the 13 minute mark.

The most interesting thing about Skelton Bay footage is how similar it is to Mentawai footage, only about 10 years behind. Has anyone noticed how the amount of black specks in the lineup is slowly creeping up with each video that comes out nowadays. Soon there will be complaints on how crowded Skelton Bay has become. Next up a landing strip and hotels???

Well I guess they don't have much red tape in Namibia with regards to Developmenrt Approvals, Building Approvals??? Just pick a spot on the beach and build away. Looks like that joint could be washed away in some heavy wether.

It’s a light house gazza and I’m pretty sure it still operates. They just done up the shack at the bottom of it

yeh you can definitely see it with each new clip ay. personally think this wave will self regulate - even in this clip you see how many are not made - guys not making sections etc. thing with the Ments is that it is so user friendly, so approachable. No scary waves there until it gets big, even the Bush and Nokandui aren't scary unless it gets biiiiig.

Thanks Namibia. After slugging away for about 3 months I finally managed to level up on the True Surf App. Got a virtual 60 second barrel and about 4000 points on one wave.

Epic. The best thing about this is you have no misconceptions of what actually happened - you know you ripped it!

What a total wanker. Could have made that movie 5 minutes without 30 minutes of this tool talking about himself. Go pros and Americans what a combination....

AndyM Friday, 23 Aug 2019 at 12:35 pm new

You should know Mike, you never get between someone and their narcissistic self-promotion, especially if they're American.

memlasurf Friday, 23 Aug 2019 at 01:38 pm new

He has a point though although perhaps it is Southern Californians and Go Pros. The ones I met on the east coast seem to be lower key.

mattlock Friday, 23 Aug 2019 at 02:57 pm new

Brett Barley is from the U.S east coast!

memlasurf Friday, 23 Aug 2019 at 03:27 pm new

Oooo that is a worry maybe his statement is on the button! Self deprecation, humility and cultural sensitivity are generally not character traits I tend to associate with USA culture. Aussies can be loud bogans but they are always ready to take the piss if someone is being a tosser.

Turn the volume down, use the fast forward button, heaps of solid barrells, no dribble.

simba Friday, 23 Aug 2019 at 02:40 pm new

Seemed pretty stock standard skeleton bay to me as Stu mentions .....gopro footage good..self promotion bad.

Haven't had time to get to this yet but he recently dropped a clip on tube-riding technique.

Well worth a watch.

Enjoyed every minute of this...Brett is probably the more enjoyable humans to watch in the vlogging world. Straight up positivity with no hint of the ubiquitous arrogance and under current of arrogance/smugness that is usually par for the course. Big fan of his "how to's" aswell!!

frog Friday, 23 Aug 2019 at 07:07 pm new

The blah blah blah was off putting.

But in the end the editing had plenty of those bits that are usually cut out - the take off, the look up the line at the approaching freight train and gave a feel of being there. Plus the wave is so amazing. Well worth watching.

I just wish all filmakers would show the long shots of line ups for longer. I could watch that persoective for ages. Instead they do a 2 second long shot and then focus tight for 98% of the video. I am not alone.

amazing wave but seriously what a wankfest!

Billyw Saturday, 24 Aug 2019 at 01:39 am new

building the brand, that's what its all about with these endless fucking surf vlogs or whatever they are.

Blue Blue Room Saturday, 24 Aug 2019 at 12:17 pm new

+2 Frog, agree liked the up line perspective, haven't seen that before. To come back from a knee op & into it that's a gutsy effort. Maybe a no frills approach goes down better with the herd, but hey a happy human being!
