Watch: Chris Bryan // Mocean

Swellnet Dispatch

Do you recall the wave that opened John John's video 'Space'? JJF materialising from a West Oz foamball like Homer from Ned Flanders hedge. It was an epic shot, highlight of the film, and it was captured by Chris Bryan.

Chris is one of a handful of surf photographers who've mastered all the tech leaps since the digital revolution.

The revolution made high end cameras cheap, schoolkids could afford them and the market was quickly flooded, yet they also required a savant-like knowledge of their inner workings to push the cameras to their their limits, which only a few photographers were capable of.

It's a skill that had to be teamed with heavy water knowledge; a steady hand to shoot and steady nerves to hold your ground when everyone, the surfers and the skis, are all heading for the channel.

This is Chris' latest showreel, containing all his best shots since 'Surfing at a 1000 frames a second' in 2016'. A quick flick back to that film makes clear just how far technology has come even in that short time.

And yeah, there's an opening monologue by Davy Attenborough.

That was simply brilliant, great use of light along with the tech wizardry. Not sure that the anti slomo crew will like it so much.

Amazing. Visual beauty has always been a big part of why I surf. It adds a dimension to the experience few other human activities can match.

All waves, no surfers-beautiful. It’s what you see in brief glimpses every paddle-well when the lighting is right,, and not on that scale!
