Watch: Brett Burcher // Engrained

Swellnet Dispatch

There's a lot to like about this film by Brett Burcher and Darcy Ward, not least that the fellas took their time to make it. I first caught wind of the project nearly two years ago, keenly waiting to see the finished result.

You know Burcher of course, he's good looking in a K-Mart catalogue kind of way, and utterly unflappable in the big stuff. Fellas got a classic pointbreak style on him too, think Curren at Rincon, or Parko at Snapper, but there's nothing down Narrawallee way that compares to those two waves so his is a style that's instinctive, ingrained - maybe even engrained.

Like other vids that Darcy and Burch have done they throw the lens wide open, also shooting their mates and including them in the mix, so here you get Burch, along with Sean Mawson, Russ Bierke (15:31 FTW), Morgs, Elliot Marshall and other local crew. Rather than a look-at-me bio pic, the feel is more communal, more joyous, more true to surfing.

Then there's the Terra Australis soundtrack: Shining Bird's 'Charlie' in the desert, Bad//Dreems 'Sacred Ground' at a local beachie, plus bush poetry betwixt sequences.

All of it worth the long, long wait.

Incredible surfing - and waves!

Makes me feel almost ashamed at the dribble I'll sometimes go out in.

How bierke digs out some of those bottom turns at the left is beyond me. Unbelievable. Great vid

I'd love to know what that song is during the South Oz section?

Didn't I write that in the text?

I did.

Didn't ya read it?

It's Shining Bird, 'Charlie'.

Reason I know that is the lead singer sits about three feet away from me most days. Not that i'm like 'with the band' or whatever. Hell no!

Song's called 'Charlie' 'cos the didge is played by Charlie McMahon, who's the fella from Gondawanaland with a hook for a hand. Not that I'm a rabid fan. Hell no!

sounds obvious but nah i didn't read it, just pressed play. Sorry Stu..
The didge is what got me, cheers

Brett must be one of the most underrated surfers in Oz. Guy can shred.

That was fantastic. Loved the waves, surfing, variety, tunes and camerawork.

Really top notch.

How often does that big wave NSW spot break like that? Must be pretty rare to get that much swell. Bierke has it so wired.
