The best Gold Coast footy of 2019 - so far

Ben Matson (thermalben)
Swellnet Dispatch

'Bout this time of the year, most years, South-east Queensland surfers start getting a nervous twitch.

By now it's been a couple of weeks, if not many months since the last decent round of surf, and although the summer trade swells are drawing closer, those pesky northerlies just won't bugger off.

So, in anticipation of a favourable summer of waves, let's look back at the best Gold Coast footy of 2019 - so far. With some luck the next nine weeks - yep, that's all that's left of the year - will add a few more contenders.

For the record, there's the usual all-star cast in this clip including Mick Fanning, Occy, Gabriel Medina, Mikey Wright, Wade Carmichael, Soli Bailey, Ben Webb, Nick Vasicek, Josh Boyle, Marlon Harrison, Xavier Huxtable, Coby Perkovich and Ryan Grey.

turts for the win

Brian from Brissy Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 06:36 pm new

I second that... turtle making em look like chumps... do you think this could be the year he finally wins the burleigh single fin????

Vic Local Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 03:25 pm new

How good is that Xavier Huxtable kiddie? Oh and next time it gets slightly over head height, can you Queensland surfers leave the jet skis at home.

jetson.rover Thursday, 7 Nov 2019 at 06:28 pm new

As soon as it gets slightly over head height there the currents get horrendous.
That's always why Goldy crew use jet skis got nothing to do with size.
It's a place where a 6'6 would be considered a serious gun and most surfers wouldn't even have in their quivers of mostly 5'8's to 6'2's.

Walk around G Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 03:36 pm new

Pumping waves but how do the crew handle those lengthy flat spells? I haven't surfed anything decent for at least 3 weeks now and I'm going stircrazy!

surfstarved Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 04:36 pm new

Fuck man, I count myself lucky if I get to surf once a fortnight (hence the handle). Life goes on, even if the colours are just a little bit duller and the dust settles a little more thickly on your bones.

bipola Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 03:59 pm new

know the feeling or is it just crazy

freeride76 Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 05:02 pm new

being a QLD surfer is now, and always has been, about downing tools when the surf is on and surfing your brains out during swells.

you got to stockpile the stoke, like a squirrel.

Nick Bone Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 05:54 pm new

“ you got to stockpile the stoke, like a squirrel.”

Perfect

Island Bay Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 05:30 pm new

Seeing that July Kirra footage made me all nostalgic - and I only surfed Kirra at the tail end of that swell.

Re the consistency: couldn't you pretty much surf the Goldy every day, if you lowered your standards 50-75 days a year?

freeride76 Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 06:02 pm new

short drive and you can surf 300 days.

Ape Anonymous Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 05:38 pm new

Last wave was (current state) Kirra perfection!

Spuddups Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 06:03 pm new

Is that left out the back of the Tweed River mouth?

Westofthelake Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 06:46 pm new

I thought the same Spuddy, looked really good for a left in the land of the rights.

Westofthelake Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 06:49 pm new

:)

Jono Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 06:54 pm new

I heard about this from a few people (days after it happened) and they were frothing. Apparently the sand barge busted it up not long afterwards.

lostdoggy Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 07:23 pm new

I always thought this was filmed there.

simba Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 07:30 pm new

na sure its brunswick.

Spuddups Tuesday, 5 Nov 2019 at 10:08 am new

Brunswick isn't on the Gold Coast. You're right though, could be Brunswick.

Chris T Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 06:19 pm new

l live in vicco would not dream of moving to the goldie 4/3 and a hood and bugger all people who cares..

ringmaster Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 07:35 pm new

You obviously don't surf around the Surfcoast region . Packed to the gills around here now apart from the guts of Winter and even then it has it's days of stupidity.

2 foot Winkipop today with 40 plus bobbing around........great fun....

(No, I wasn't one of them)

Vic Local Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 07:54 pm new

I think Chris was talking about Victoria Island off Vancouver. Crowds are pretty small there, unlike Victoria in Australia where the point breaks are full of kooks who can barely get to their feet.

Chris T Tuesday, 5 Nov 2019 at 08:32 am new

I do but if you travel a bit, lower your standards surf boggaly or sawmills, addis or 13 beach, outers, many other spots like that, you can surf with a couple out in winter or on your own , its not flat like the goldy,Main point is there is always swell somwhere in vicco .snapper would do my head in.

velocityjohnno Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 10:07 pm new

If you live on East Coast Tas you can have both the flat spells and the 4/3 and hoodie all in one package.

garyg1412 Tuesday, 5 Nov 2019 at 08:43 am new

Ha Ha VJ - you hit the nail on the head there. The Ghost Coast shuffle is commonplace. I think our 4/3's last 10 times longer than anyone else's due to lack of use.

Gary G Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 08:38 pm new

Gary, being a Victorian, doesn’t think he’s seen any good footy from the Gold Coast for their entire existence.

AndyM Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 08:59 pm new

What about that footy from that camera hidden in the roof above the shower during schoolies?

Gary G Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 09:23 pm new

The one in the men’s shower at Burleigh? Yep, Gary was in fine form last season and wanted to share it with the world.

AndyM Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 09:28 pm new

They say it's like a baby's arm holding an apple.

velocityjohnno Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 10:00 pm new

If you want the footy, you gotta get the forey.

Solitude Monday, 4 Nov 2019 at 10:10 pm new

As far a Goldy point surf I feel like it’s been a fairly sub par year. Oma was
obviously amazing but there really haven’t been consistent stuff from the east quadrant to light up all the spots........I tend to know as they all start coming south more regularly when there’s been a lack of action up there

warddy Tuesday, 5 Nov 2019 at 08:58 am new

Yes it’s been a bad year and you have to drive a long way to get good waves ...
Oma ripped the sand apart on the beaches and they still haven’t recovered...
Apart from Circus time this place is over over rated ..

thermalben Tuesday, 5 Nov 2019 at 09:05 am new

It's been a loooong time since the sand was any good at Currumbin. Looks like Middleton Point at the moment.

linez Tuesday, 5 Nov 2019 at 09:57 am new

Yeah, this is the longest run of really bad banks there that I can remember. It doesn't look like it's going to change any time soon either. Holes all through it, and that outside bank looks like it's collecting any sand that is coming past, effectively stopping it from filtering down the point proper.

Denyer Tuesday, 5 Nov 2019 at 11:22 am new

The last wave in that vid tho...

Shaun Hanson Tuesday, 5 Nov 2019 at 05:17 pm new

You would think if your onto a good thing youd shut the fuck up ...at least not name breaks

bipola Tuesday, 5 Nov 2019 at 08:14 pm new

no secrets on the goldy

tango Wednesday, 6 Nov 2019 at 12:21 pm new

I was thinking it was a Barry Crocker of a year until the 2 min mark if that was the highlights....nice waves at the end, though. Shame the "highlights" had to include two waves with what appeared to be blatant drop-ins....

vince115 Saturday, 9 Nov 2019 at 09:58 am new

Where is that last reeling right filmed??!

kbomb Monday, 11 Nov 2019 at 06:58 pm new

The best of 2019 and not one chick (surfer) made it. Come on guys.
