Was there with a mate the fortnight leading up to the tsunami in '94. We had a run of great waves and as the boys headed in we were on the way back to Kuta. Changeover day.... lucky I guess, for us. Anyway, the coconut wireless took a few days (no mobiles) and we heard the next night while on the piss what had transpired. Heavy times wondering what had gone down.
Out to the Airport the next day for our flight home and here come the boys getting transported home. As bad as it looked, they were alive. Unlike a few hundred locals down in the bay area. It was a very sombre flight home with Dog shedding some light on it all but certainly through a survivalists view, he really was lucky to be alive.
I had never seen a bunch of blokes so chopped up, but most telling was their demeanor as to how they had been real close. It was a real wake up call for all of us as to what can happen on those incredibly fun O/S trips.

My first trips there I always stayed in the dodgy cheap tents at Jungle camp. I always figured the cheaper it was the longer I could stay. It was the noises in the jungle that you used to worry about and then after the tsunami the sound of the waves was always in the back of your mind too.
Like Blower above, I'd left about a week before and was home when I heard about. Strangely, with the Kuta bombings I'd also just left and arrived home to the news as well.
Timing in life is everything they say.
Gotta say Bainy is still ripping and sounds like a legend of a bloke.

Did a boat trip in 86 on Moana Manu with Captain Dem at the helm. Went ashore one day to swap fish for fruit. Recall most of Bobby's camp was tree house material with a few tigers still likely to wander through at night. I guess the elevation helped a bit in 94 Tsunami ? Red Herring where are you ?

Just checked my diary. June 3 1994 I was at Lakeys. Solid 6ft swell that day. I didn't find out about the tsunami till I got back home.
