Watch: Gold Coast 2019 wipeout reel

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

Save for last week's small east swell, and the even smaller south swell that followed it, Gold Coasters have been largely unencumbered by the affects of surf.

They've been free to stretch the working day early and late, free to drive straight home, no need to pass the beach, and free to consider the value of SUPs as their surfboards lay dormant in the corner week after week.

But that'll change, the waves will come, and so will the crowds, so let's see what you've got to look forward to.

That’s because these WA SUP kooks don’t know how to surf.

Maybe once a surfers paradise and now a stupidly developed, overcrowded human toilet.

"human toilet"
N.B. DO NOT surf Burleigh after heavy rain!

This time the year before last, the one time I was not surfing good greenmount, only watching, I saw five guys on one wave and all in the pocket. At that point, this dude arrives, high on some kind of hallucinogen, barely able to walk. He looked at the chicken wire that had been fixed to the hill - Council vs. the bush turkeys. He says, "wooaahhhh man... there's a fence ON THE GROUND!!!!!" I thought to myself, now this guy get's it.

How many kooks surf these days. Oh times be have changin'sderry.

Spuddups Wednesday, 11 Dec 2019 at 07:26 am new

You would lose your mind if you came to my local. We have the highest concentration of beginner and intermediate surfers in the known universe. Your average Gold Coast kook would be a ripper over here. On the plus side this means that any slightly gnarly reef-break is generally empty.

Where are you Spuddups? It's definitely feeling like there's a new cohort of surfers coming into the lineup at the moment - 25-35 year old, male and female, never spent much time in the ocean but have consumed the "good vibes only" surf culture for years and are having their first crack at it but aren't prepared to admit they're a beginner. Not saying it's a bad thing, but it's a noticeable trend I've picked up on.

I have a theory based on a reduction Of body boarders I tend to see these days..........
I knew people in days gone by who would body board because they were reasonably competent, could ride ‘good’ waves and didn’t want to be seen as a kook on a surfboard.
Where as now I wonder with what I’m seeing as a reduction in body boarders, are these new comers to the ocean non pluses about their poor ability? Are the adult stand up kooks the body boarders of a previous gen?

Don’t get me wrong I don’t care what you do as long as you are safe, respectful and having fun
NB/ exception those dickheads on those wave jumping jet skis, don’t get me started!

Lidding had it's hey-day in the 90's I reckon; about the time that we were all riding stupidly narrow, thin and rockered surfboards. Boards are now shorter, flatter, wider and thicker, ie much more fun to surf. I reckon this has had something to do with the demise of the lid.
