Watch: Mavericks, Friday the 13th

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

Raw footage from the first swell of the NorCal season, which fittingly arrived on Friday the 13th December.

The swell wasn't huge, though the odd cleanup still snuck through, however with the loosely edited footage, which clocks in at 27 mins, viewers get a greater sense of the day's rhythm. Skip through if you want highlights (hint: some of the bigger waves arrive towards the end), however a slow run through the footage is still rewarding.

some great take offs. i saw five guys on one wave, 4 drop ins, there doesn't seem any drama about it.

Great footage, quite atmospheric with just the noise of the wind, crash of the waves and voice of the safety lookout talking to the skis. I liked all the grey pelicans out there. Big waves, big boards and big kelp.

Looks to be a bit of a circus with that many guys, definitely very solid by the end of it. I'm glad we don't have to deal with that kind of sharing over here yet. Taking off on the peak looked impossible on those sets.
I haven't seen Manny in many years, he insisted on towing me on a big day at Outer Reef, so I tried it, great wave, but not my cup of tea, so I paddled it with a charger from California, just two of us taking the drops.

Sometimes the left looks good out there. Not this swell. Must be the W angle.

Big waves Big boards and Big Balls I’m certainly no expert but wonder if board development for that stuff will ever progress to enable setting a rail a bit earlier and handle the lumps and bumps

as much as i like a music soundtrack, I really enjoyed the parts of this with no music, where you could hear the ocean, the waves heaving, and the excited hooting and calling of the punters. It really put me there, with the fear and adrenaline of the moment.
