Watch: Rainbow Bay last Friday

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

I'm not the first to say it, but with the mix of stacked sand and swell, 2020 is shaping as the best year in recent memory for surfers in northern NSW and SE QLD.

Yet more proof is this vid shot last Friday, 31st July, deep within winter, with a clean, mid-range east swell mimicking the sand contours at Rainbow Bay.

Lots of ordinary punters in the mix, plus a few known surfers such as Asher Pacey, Chris Bennetts, Mick Fanning, and Grace Styman-Lane, however it's Grace's twin sister Audrey who gets the wave of the video and one of the better waves of the winter. There's no need for me to point out which wave I'm talking about.

Go Audrey!! Loved that wave and felt your stoke; so nicely expressed!! Awesome three in one, looked like so much fun!

donweather Monday, 3 Aug 2020 at 12:47 pm new

I'm assuming that's reference to the last wave? If so, great to see her super pumped on a super sick wave.

burzum Monday, 3 Aug 2020 at 03:46 pm new

Pity she carrries on like an entitled idiot in the surf. Both sisters do.

scrotina Monday, 3 Aug 2020 at 04:15 pm new

totally agree. cant stand the pair of them. and 2 claims on that wave when she hadnt yet even been barreled?! stalling the in the pocked doesnt count.

farkenkook Monday, 3 Aug 2020 at 10:10 pm new

Agreed. Fair bit of carry-on for a few head dips.

loafboy Tuesday, 4 Aug 2020 at 08:11 am new

Maybe both sisters are sick of entitled misogynistic males ruling the lineup and want/need to assert themselves. These girls rip harder than 99% of the fuckwits at cooly and have earned their spot in the lineup.

burzum Tuesday, 4 Aug 2020 at 09:29 am new

Nah. They are barely above the median in terms of ability out there. Plenty of other women out there who rip and don’t carry on like those two.

wax-on-danielson Tuesday, 4 Aug 2020 at 08:55 am new

I’m surprised she claimed so hard cause she surfed it like she gets pitted all day long.

Solitude Monday, 3 Aug 2020 at 11:41 am new

Pure joy. Well done. What a wave.

the orange mid wins

the-u-turn Monday, 3 Aug 2020 at 04:37 pm new

Personally, I just enjoy seeing a young woman feeling the stoke and knowing it. Yes, she was probably punching high knowing she had the wave to herself in an un-forgiving theatre of masculinity. Goodonher.

karliosis Monday, 3 Aug 2020 at 04:53 pm new

3 claims on one wave .. brilliant!

groovie Monday, 3 Aug 2020 at 05:23 pm new

Such a perfect sand bottom wave. Surfed it last swell & hadn't done so for a few years due to the crowds. Scored it with only 50 in the whole lineup & got a couple of very long hollow waves, stoked as I had forgotten how perfect it can be!

theblacksheep Monday, 3 Aug 2020 at 06:25 pm new

Burzum and Scrotina what a couple of fuckwits you are. Not that I need to point this out really. You’ve done a fine job all on your own.

bluediamond Monday, 3 Aug 2020 at 10:20 pm new

I'll completely second that. Fuckwits.

memlasurf Tuesday, 4 Aug 2020 at 01:44 pm new

Oooo... things are getting testy between the chaps up north. At least you mob can walk out the front door. Be happy and all they said was the ladies can be overbearing. Now kiss and make up....yeah right.

goofyfoot Monday, 3 Aug 2020 at 07:35 pm new

That grab rail at 1:30 was nuts. Think it was fanning?

Chipper Tuesday, 4 Aug 2020 at 05:37 pm new

I for one don't care who or what in the claims department, if they claim it's mostly in the moment and pure joy causing it!!! I am just so stoked to see those people so stoked especially the girls... go girls, what a wave!!!

Hoodie Tuesday, 4 Aug 2020 at 08:30 pm new

I'd claim just paddling out at the moment.
Rather that than sitting in lockdown in my lounge room. Go Girl, I loved it..

Mack Flanno Tuesday, 4 Aug 2020 at 08:47 pm new

As soon as I can leave my house, I am joining every other man and his dog up there. I would kill just to pull into a warm, sand bottom, draining closeout.

Steamers?

John_Clark Wednesday, 5 Aug 2020 at 07:05 pm new

My thoughts exactly and spent the first 30 years of my life surfing there, springsuit is all you need.

freeride76 Wednesday, 5 Aug 2020 at 10:20 am new

water hasn't dropped below 21 all winter.

ken.vincent Wednesday, 5 Aug 2020 at 11:01 am new

They're a tough bunch in SE QLD!

river Wednesday, 5 Aug 2020 at 07:07 pm new

So good to see both twins get barrelled And the triple claim was all time. If I was able to get a wave like that I would claim from start to finish. So rare to see so much stoke and it’s so infectious and completely changes the atmosphere out there. Two legends that teach women and girls not to put up with any shit (and gee do they get their fair share of it!)

tango Wednesday, 5 Aug 2020 at 09:28 pm new

Yep its hard to ignore that stoke in the water.

I know some girls play their cards hard, but I have to agree that the girls often get heaps of shit in the water. My wife surfs most breaks around here and is constantly both amazed at how nice some blokes are and despairing at how some fucktards seem to focus all their kook tendencies at her and hassle like mad when they won't do it to the blokes. I do enjoy catching them in the act, though.

gggiiibbbo Wednesday, 5 Aug 2020 at 09:48 pm new

I hoot anyone on a banger set wave at my local all the time. It feels good to celebrate someone else getting shacked silly or doing a massive hack, doesn’t it?! Shit yeah!

masseydoug Saturday, 8 Aug 2020 at 04:49 pm new

Magic Audrey!

Walk around G Saturday, 8 Aug 2020 at 09:56 pm new

Ok, from this angle, it really does look like a lotta fun. If only everyone, could actually line up in some sort of civilised manner.

Imagine.........if everyone actually got a chance to take off on a wave, or even pick their chosen set wave, then regardless of the outcome, off to the back of the line you go.

Yeh, similarly too the new wave pool type hierarchy......dare I even bloody suggest it?

I guess it could actually work in theory but most humans (myself included) are probably too selfish, we're aggressive and/or self-righteous by nature, we will, in most circumstances continue too just rape 'n pillage whatever we can in the surf zone,

Oh well, let's just continue as per normal.

tiger Sunday, 9 Aug 2020 at 07:23 am new

I refer to it as "critical mass". Once this is achieved any given surf spot is turned into a dog eat dog shitfight. You see it all the time in crowded surf zones. An orderly crowd respecting rotation, all getting waves and sharing the stoke. Instantly devolves into an ugly scene as soon as the critical mass is achieved. Unfortunately a lot of places, particularly the se Qld region, are permanently at critical mass.

Sammy yoon at 1:50 I think ??? One of the nicest people you will ever meet
