Nat Young's Surfboard Collection For Sale
Recently, Nat Young's family put his collection of boards into the hands of an auctioneer. Though never a prolific shaper, Nat, who is 75-years old, shaped steadily from the mid-60s onwards. This collection includes 32 boards from the 70s and 80s - so no Magic Sam, Nat's wonder board from 1966 - with many of them being Nat's personal riders.
There's a fairly even split of 70s 'naked lady' boards, and 80s Fall Lines, plus a smattering of other labels Nat shaped under. Some boards are unquestionably of high value, while a few appear dubious inclusions.
Rather than split the collection, the family has insisted the boards stay together as a whole collection.
The boards are being sold by Tim Goodman who expects they'll fetch between $30K and $50K.

Why not donate them to a surf history collection for all to see the past . Looks like a bit of a money grab to me . Seems to be over priced like all the so called collector surfboards out there !

My surfboard warehouse ones are up for sale not quite vintage ,almost a few years old and i will throw in a board cover and tell the buyer how great i was / am so anyone interested i will sell as a package deal at an amazing price of $ 10,000 !

I never had the kfc … but a single fin foamie with a blue/white kinda cover. Leggie used to go into a hole in the rubber fin - did the job in those simpler times

I think the U.S. Vintage Market will find the Pricing very Attractive.
#10 is really interesting, mid 80's. By now thrusters are ubiquitous, but Nat's gone back to the double ender, still multi fins, wide point back, full nose, and he's included a rear trailing box to mount different rear fins. I bet those were bigger than the sides, too. Hello, 2+1.
The longboards (or: 8'+ I do recall 8 footers being wildly popular as longboards came back even to the extent clubs ran 8ft divisions) seem to come back a little later. All this points to searching for a feeling that got lost. By now obviously, that feeling has been well and truly rediscovered and we even have reproduction beaver tail wetsuit tops.
Surprised with some of the comments, yeah okay a few of these boards are too trashed to be of much worth to me no matter how rare.
But many are in decent condition and works of art and important pieces of surf history.
There is a very limited number of these boards, but a board you buy off the rack today for $1K, there is literally hundreds or even thousands of that same model and in most cases most of the work done was by a machine and unlikely they will ever be of more value than they day you bought it.
Totally agree Indo.. doesn't seem like Nat is getting the respect he deserves in the comments - Ol' Nat's getting done dirty here... I say save your cynicism for the contemporary era of mass-produced landfill popouts and give these handshapes their deserved place in history: Nat's Nat and crap's crap.

On the subject of old boards, i would love to track down a board that disappeared from my Bondi flat in the late 70,s A 6'9" Dick Brewer flyer pintail , single fin shaped by Dave Ahrens. Bought it off Dave in Bali in 77. Yellow deck ,clear bottom. Not the sort of board that would disappear without a trace! The truth is out there!!
