Shaper Takes 54 Years To Deliver

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

In the five decades and four years since Ron Roozen ordered a board from Surf, Dive and Ski in Melbourne, the Morning of the Earth came and went, similarly twin fins were hot then not, then hot then not (and now hot again), MR won four straight titles, Kelly eleven in total, Thrusters were invented, four fins too, the Quiksilver empire began, boomed, then went bust, legropes became a thing, deck grip too, and the number of surfers in Australia multiplied by a factor of fuck knows - it'd be a lot though.

Typing on Instagram - there's another one, social media and the internet - John Jolly from Shady Hollow Surfboards picks up the story.

"In 69’ after seeing Wayne win the Junior Titles in Margaret River, Ron Roozen ordered an Involvement model surfboard from Surf Dive + Ski in Melbourne, yet he never got the board," wrote John.

Wayne, at right, coming off the top at Margaret River on a lime green, six foot single fin (Falzon), and at left is the modern version

"A few months ago Ron calls me and says, “I see Wayne is reissuing his Involvement model boards again, where’s mine?”'

Wayne explains the mistake thus: "At the time I was travelling around shooting 'Sea of Joy' and somehow a miscommunication between SDS and Arnold’s shop lead to the order being misplaced."

Wayne started it straight away. As for colours and dimensions, John said Ron wanted the same board he ordered originally, "a six foot, lime green tint top and bottom, single fin, but will be a wall hanger and won’t be surfed."

“I have complete success with all my wallhangers," added Wayne. "None have ever failed me."

zenagain Tuesday, 19 Sep 2023 at 06:56 pm new

Sorry Udes. Wouldn't know. Not much of a market follower.

Sweet looking board AW.

AlfredWallace Tuesday, 19 Sep 2023 at 07:19 pm new

Zenagain. How’s your humble abode, hanging in there ?. Wife’s nerves settled ?

My new board is a 6’2” ‘Fiji’ ,twin fin with triple stringers, triple flyers, round dented tail like original MOTE boards, finished beautifully with not a sprayed board, but an amazing Seafoam tinted resin. The craftsmanship is outstanding. Their service was excellent.

I’m not on the payroll !!!. AW

zenagain Tuesday, 19 Sep 2023 at 07:24 pm new

You should be. I'd love one.

All good. Back to normal, cheers.

Do you know where the glassing was done AW? I reckon the finishers often don't get enough recognition for the job they do

AlfredWallace Wednesday, 20 Sep 2023 at 08:01 am new

Fliplid. Hi. I totally agree, the glassers on this occasion deserve accolades. From memory, I could be saying it wrongly, The Glassing Shop, The Glassing Lab or something like that.
The board came with a little leggie attachment and I think it had those or similar words on it.
Seafoam tinted resin finish, to me, makes the board look like old school but in todays present mode. I’m sure Simon and Dash at MOTE could tell you the correct name. AW

Solitude Wednesday, 20 Sep 2023 at 08:18 am new

'The Glass Lab' aka 'The board lab' do some of MOTE's glassing so could be them

udo Wednesday, 20 Sep 2023 at 08:00 am new

Likely to be Surman Glassing Co.

AlfredWallace Wednesday, 20 Sep 2023 at 08:03 am new

Udo. Hi. That’s it. Glassing Co.. Thanks.AW

Fliplid Wednesday, 20 Sep 2023 at 08:57 am new

Thanks for the replies.

Looks like a special board AW.

AlfredWallace Wednesday, 20 Sep 2023 at 09:13 am new

Fliplid. I’m hoping so, haven’t ridden it yet, I have a banged up hand at present, still a few weeks before back in the water.
The photos of the board don’t do the glass job justice.
It’s the light, makes the board look sprayed/painted.

Up close the tinted glass job looks like a rigid condom over a blank, ‘sans’ jizz. AW

54 years makes Tom Hoye,s 3 year wait pale into comparison ... RIP PE.
next 54 hanging on a wall is a bit of a waste, ride it Ronny ride it!

udo Wednesday, 20 Sep 2023 at 09:20 am new

AW - it seems a shame to cut away Side Stringers to install the Futures Boxes
Its not done on all of them..

AlfredWallace Wednesday, 20 Sep 2023 at 09:47 am new

Udo. You are very observant, I agree. Those two photos are at my mates place, he’s got a MOTE board also. he’s a long time friend of the Jones family
He’s doesn’t have the effect you mentioned.

I’m still happy, I’m hoping I can keep it in good nick and actually keep the board in perpetuity. I love old craft/skills//methods melding with modern techniques, not just in boards but other personal items. I’m fond of the ‘built’ environment (sustainable), I go nuts if I’m not building or constructing something at any one time. I’ve had a hammer or a spade in my hands since the age of four my father recently informed me. AW

Triple Stringer Surcharge is a Sting...

AlfredWallace Wednesday, 20 Sep 2023 at 10:36 am new

Udo. Agree. There’s not much that isn’t when bespoke craft of any kind is made.
I’m not lecturing to anyone here, just my take on it.

The cost is irrelevant in my opinion, don’t mean to sound swanky.
It’s all relative to your regular spending.
It takes a slight modification to the norm.
Like I’ve mentioned previously over the years, it’s about prioritising.

In this case $100 a week in a different sock to my Ments saving sock, over 20 weeks, a board magically appears. It’s not hard, just divert your spending.
We can be wasteful on a daily basis, bought take-away food, coffees, excessive alcohol, but mostly useless crap and unnecessary gadgets. $100’s jump out of your account before you know it, check your bank statements, gives you a full appreciation of the type of person you are. AW

udo Wednesday, 20 Sep 2023 at 11:04 am new

Yep Im with ya - i often buy the same item as a Friend i nearly always pay $20 or more less for it
used to be by making a few Ph calls now its a 5 min Google Search - its just too easy to save a $ and it adds up Quick
But i still get Oh why would you bother....Then its have you bought another such and such you Rich Prick
They just dont get it !

Chipper Wednesday, 20 Sep 2023 at 11:28 am new

AW have you surfed the Fiji yet? If so how did it go? Would you go thinner/less volume?

AlfredWallace Wednesday, 20 Sep 2023 at 12:09 pm new

Chipper. Hi. No I haven’t ridden the board yet, shortly I will.

No changes to thickness and volume for me.

Herein lies the difference between a board off the shelf and one that’s bespoke made to ‘my specifications’.

From the very moment I spoke to Dash Jones at MOTE, I knew I was in good hands.
Basically, I was interviewed at length over the phone.

Questions asked : Age, weight, height, surfing ability, geographic locations i surf here and overseas. In Winter I’m wearing a 4/3 with booties, they need to know this stuff, in the Ments I surf with a ‘short John’ for added buoyancy when I’m in the soup, they want as much add on ‘baggage’ as you can give them so they can formulate what’s right for you.

Another bonus of waiting for a board say with a 6-12 month’s turnaround is that after paying an initial deposit , you’ve got ample time to save for your balance payment, it couldn’t be any easier, IMO it’s a much better way to buy a board instead of impulse buying a board that you probably think ‘looks’ good, but does it play good, we’ve all done that before.

Ive had boards by others with similar specs and they’ve all be fine, for me. AW
