'The Occumentary' 25th Anniversary Tour

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

To celebrate the 25th anniversaries of both Mark Occhilupo’s 1999 ASP World Title and The Occumentary, film maker Jack McCoy and Occhilupo will be hitting the east coast of Australia.

It will be the first time the film has been shown on the big screen and to commemorate the event, Jack has remastered the film to give it a complete new look.

“I’ve spent hundreds of hours blowing up the film from its original VHS release as a 4:3 aspect, to 16.9 widescreen," said big Jack. "When I watched it back for the first time it was like watching a whole new movie, people’s minds are going to be blown!”

Following his hiatus from competitive surfing, Billabong founder, Gordon Merchant, sent Occhilupo to WA to live and train with McCoy and his family, and begin the comeback of all comebacks. He shed thirty kegs, cleaned up his lifestyle, and they began documenting Occhilupo’s journey back to the pinnacle of professional surfing.

It began with his iconic performance at the Bells Beach Skins event, and ultimately led to Occy becoming (at the time, curse Kelly Slater) surfing’s oldest world champion at 33-years old.

The film was the first ever feature documentary of a surfer and instantly became a cult classic, with many still regarding it as one of the best surf movies ever produced. As with all of Jack’s films, the soundtrack is next level and features the likes of the Foo Fighters, Ed Kuepper, Powderfinger, and Yothu Yindi.

Throughout the tour, the audience will be treated with Jack, Occhilupo and special guests sharing untold stories and never seen before footage from Occhilupo’s career, as well as a Q and A session to delve deeper into this special moment in time.

“I look back at this period as one of the most amazing experiences of my life and to have it documented in such a way is so special. I can’t believe it’s been 25 years but it’s going to be great to hit the road with Jack and friends to celebrate the occasion with the surfing tribe,” says Occ.

If I was on east coast of Oz I'd def attend one of the screenings.

samerubi Tuesday, 5 Mar 2024 at 06:53 pm new

amazing that a surf film from 25 years ago gets more sponsors than callum robson.....

Terminal Tuesday, 5 Mar 2024 at 07:16 pm new

So Occy will be dropping-in to celebrate?

nextswell Tuesday, 5 Mar 2024 at 08:54 pm new

On point. Wish that was the first comment .

burleigh Tuesday, 5 Mar 2024 at 07:20 pm new

The way Occy blatantly fades every single human with complete disregard, I would suggest not attending this shit. The guy is a peanut

Slackjawedyokel Tuesday, 5 Mar 2024 at 08:25 pm new

Mate, if there’s one thing that Hollywood has taught me Is that you’ve got to learn to seperate people’s talents from their personalities when it comes to entertainment . I wouldn’t like to be trapped in a stuck elevator with Tom Cruise on MDMA but I can still enjoy Top Gun Maverick.

nextswell Tuesday, 5 Mar 2024 at 08:51 pm new

Fair call but I’d rather he was a prick in a heat than in real life. I guess the Tom Cruise analogy works.

seeds Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 12:04 am new

Mixed up!

southernraw Tuesday, 5 Mar 2024 at 07:37 pm new

Yeahh Occ. Absolute legend

Van Man Tuesday, 5 Mar 2024 at 11:47 pm new

Cmon Jack! Do a show in Brisbane so us Brisso surfers can froth on Occys backhand foam climbs at the skins!

Surfalot67 Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 08:03 am new

Yeah, nah. The guy is a sad shadow of the former great surfer. How long can Gordon keep propping up this muppet?

dewhurst Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 08:10 am new

Sad shadow. Hes nudging 60 mate. Classic Swellnet haters.

stunet Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 09:15 am new

I've deleted all the spiteful comments in the thread. If you really feel like you've got to get a negative thought off your chest then take it to the forums.

The film, Occ's world title, and Jack's film catalogue brought a lot of joy to surfers and it's in the same vein that I agreed to run the press release. The relentlessly negative shit reflects on me and Swellnet, we don't need it.

I've left Terminal's comment cos of, what I hope, are obvious reasons.

If you've got a problem with any of this: stuart@swellnet.com

DingOZ Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 10:24 am new

...and I meant that Occ was one that hasn't personally dropped in on me!

zenagain Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 10:42 am new

So you're the one?!

southernraw Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 09:33 am new

Thanks Stu. Good stuff.

DingOZ Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 10:20 am new

Well played Stu.

You can't censor all the negativity, but when it becomes a pile-on, it then just too parochial and unnecessary.

I'd like to add Occ to the long list of former world champs who've dropped in on me - mainly Sydney, but various places.

Surfalot67 Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 11:00 am new

Fair enough @DingOZ, a pile on is unnecessary, but I do wonder at what point we stop forgiving the current reality due to past endeavors?

DingOZ Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 02:23 pm new

Look, for what he did in his career it sure was a wild arc (or two), but what he did was pretty great in the scope of the history of Australian surfing ...the world champs going back to midget'64.

Out of respect, round here Sydney/N, we tend to give these kind of people whichever wave they want.

freeride76 Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 10:26 am new

I dropped in on Tom Carroll a couple of years ago at a local Point.

Didn't realise it - he was too deep and jumped off, but the peanut gallery was pretty stoked.

I focus Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 11:11 am new

Ha ha they always are too deep... still local bragging rights there FR.

Sprout Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 01:31 pm new

Hah! I reminded Parko of his place in line at a local bombie years ago, same result.

DingOZ Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 02:37 pm new

Yeah, and TVC would admit to being a serial offender. But more often he'll be way inside testing limits first.

Pops Thursday, 7 Mar 2024 at 02:05 pm new

My old man would have loved to see that.
Never misses an opportunity to complain about how much of a pest TC was as a grom.

ashsam Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 11:07 am new

At $38.50 a pop??

Lanky Dean Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 11:33 am new

Seems the is still some neggy Comments on here do I get the unedited version stu ?

stunet Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 11:35 am new

No, was much worse. Spiteful and frightfully lacking in humour.

Lanky Dean Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 11:48 am new

Salty......everyone eating sour grapes today?

adsi Thursday, 7 Mar 2024 at 01:39 pm new

Nah everyone is just sick of Occy relentlessly burning them on every single wave, not even good ones.
Done it to me a few times on average waves i've waited yonks for.
I really hate online bullying so don't think people should be saying nasty stuff about him, just boycott his film so he doesn't make any money. Same way i don't buy any Tomo boards cos he drops in and is super agro when he does.
Comments like Terminal's above are gold and well deserved.

seeds Thursday, 7 Mar 2024 at 08:13 pm new

Disappointing to hear re Tomo. Considering fairly recent events involving a family member.

soggydog Friday, 8 Mar 2024 at 08:05 pm new

Yes it is, as I am partial to Tomo’s shapes.
Don’t want to add to the negativity, buuuut, they both, McCoy and Occy, added to the exposure of WA and not even a WA show. Wankers.

Lanky Dean Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 11:36 am new

Chin up people's, occy's story is phenomenal
Greatest of all comebacks in sports.
His book is thorough, descriptive and all time.

Maybe you've all been back paddling him at the supermarket.
He is very observant,
Miss his podcast.

DingOZ Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 01:47 pm new

For me it is all about his his absolutely meteoric rise in the eighties.

And he's still out there at spots when no-one else is as well, from what I've seen and heard. No worse than the average self-entitled long term local?

icandig Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 12:45 pm new

Speaking of lacking in humour....an interesting advert idea which doesn't quite hit the Mark.

goofyfoot Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 12:45 pm new

This movie came out the year I got my first surfboard.
We’d watch it for an amp up before we headed out and got in everyone’s way.
Sad to see his behaviour now, although I don’t have to surf with him so it doesn’t affect me directly. Wonder why he thinks he can do that?

lostdoggy Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 12:55 pm new

Chronic torticolis.
Neck doesn’t turn left.

Classic movie. Classic surfer.

NDC Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 10:36 pm new

Reckon it’s no good - made me chuckle - each to. Their own I guess. Thanks for sharing

basesix Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 03:09 pm new

awesome, any film preservation is ok by me!! even better if it's a historic surf classic, on ya Jack!
https://www.collection.nfsa.gov.au/title/772640
(though occy in North Shore gets my vote for biggest impression on vid.. it was the first time I'd heard occy talk.. confusing to an impressionable grom, hearing occy talk..)

anyone know how to find 14yo occy's puberty blues appearance?

stunet Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 03:16 pm new

One minute mark.

Three seconds screen time.

basesix Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 03:44 pm new

haha - cheers - I remember the scene well, had no idea it was a lil' occy : )

freeride76 Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 03:50 pm new

Wow, hard to watch 40 years later.

Pops Thursday, 7 Mar 2024 at 02:09 pm new

In terms of the surfing, or the image quality?

The surfing still holds up, for mine.

Eyeman Wednesday, 6 Mar 2024 at 10:22 pm new

Occ the Drop. Not well liked at snapper.

mikehunt207 Thursday, 7 Mar 2024 at 12:22 am new

25 years ! That must almost be how many kids Occ,s had since then?

oldgreg Thursday, 7 Mar 2024 at 06:57 pm new

Back in the day his comeback inspired me to start surfing again after many years of heading down the wrong track with various poor life decisions, so at 54 and still surfing, that’s a positive.
But for all the negative, why bitch and moan on line ? Fkn sort it out old school or just shut up .
I don’t surf around there and never will but who calls these “ legends “ out ?
I’ve called a few people out in my time and they’re usually weak as piss unless they’ve got back up , but we all the same .
You’re just a surfer , nothin special .
If 200 blokes at snapper can’t front the caaarnt well you reap what u sow

southernraw Thursday, 7 Mar 2024 at 09:04 pm new

haha.
This is a great comment @oldgreg.

burleigh Thursday, 7 Mar 2024 at 09:19 pm new

So you condone violence now Southern?

southernraw Thursday, 7 Mar 2024 at 09:21 pm new

geez you're a fuckwit.

burleigh Thursday, 7 Mar 2024 at 09:33 pm new

I don't agree that violence unless under extreme circumstances or self defence is ever ok.

Oldgreg's comments are worse than any other comments on here previously that have been removed.

Surfalot67 Thursday, 7 Mar 2024 at 09:41 pm new

Burlz is right though SR. One minute you’re all who cares he’s drop in dick, Occs a legend bla bla bla. Nek minute your bootlicking old reg for suggesting violence. So which one is it?

oldgreg Thursday, 7 Mar 2024 at 10:01 pm new

Wtf u sooks
If I keep pushing in line at the bar , ya gunna say something or not ?
It’s not about violence, it’s about standing up for your self and saying something en mass .
Or just keep whinging on line
I’m all for Sharing the line up
@burliegh it’s not about violence mate but every surfer that turns the other cheeks let’s the fuckwits continue their shit behaviour

burleigh Friday, 8 Mar 2024 at 11:09 am new

Nah, i wouldnt say anything if you kept pushing in. Life is too short for that kind of drama. You go for it. I'll get my drink 1 minute later. It's way better than getting into a punch on.

But people notice you pushing in, do you think you will get any favours from me or everyone else you've pushed in front of?

You might be happy that you pushing in line, but eventually you will pay the price. Much like this east coast tour charging $35+ to watch. Do you really think anyone that he's blatantly faded is going to go along?

You get a bad rep, it's hard to shake.

southernraw Friday, 8 Mar 2024 at 12:12 pm new

Hahaha.
What a fkn Karen!!!!!
Get a life c#nt!

Surfalot67 Friday, 8 Mar 2024 at 06:20 pm new

You're an idiot Reg. You can't decide which part of your toxic masculinity bullshit to dribble next. One minute you're calling people you have no clue about "sooks" and thumping your chest like some hard man, then you back pedal and say, "it's not about violence, it's about standing up for yourself." I know I have called Occy out loud by name (he pulled back), and I'm sure Burlz has too, but some entitled ex pro flogs will continue to drop in regardless due to years of bootlicking by sycophants like Southernbore. So, what exactly is your answer ya knob? I'll take it by your comment that you're "all for sharing" that you'd meekly cop the burn and do nothing at all. Maybe calling out the offenders every chance we can on social media is EXACTLY the right answer
