Tamayo Perry Killed By A Shark In Hawaii

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Dispatch

Tamayo Perry, the hard-charging Pipe surfer cum actor and lifeguard, has been confirmed dead after a shark attack on Oahu's east side.

Perry, who was 49-years old, was pronounced dead at the scene and suffered injuries from more than one shark bite. He was surfing during a break from lifeguard duties near Goat Island, also known as Mokuauia, near Laie. He was brought in to shore by lifeguards via PWC.

A Pipe regular throughout the nineties, Perry parlayed his exposure into a short-lived acting career, first as a stunt double in surf-ploitation films such as 'Blue Crush' and later in shows such as 'Lost' and 'Hawaii Five-O'.

More recently he'd run a surf school on the east side, where he was raised, while also lifeguarding.

Tamayo made his name at Pipeline, and he also made it into the Pipeline Masters main event twice: in 1999 (after winning the Trials) and 2006. For well over a decade he was considered one of the very best at Pipeline.

So sad as he was one of the real nice guys of the North Shore. We always had a good yarn when we would cross paths. I also feel for his Aussie wife Amelia. RIP Tomayo, it was really nice to know you.

Tamayo was always smiling and making people smile. The sort of person we should all try to be like a little more. I still remember a hoot he gave me at 7th hole over 20 years ago. Thanks Tamayo. Rest in aloha.

hey stu, you sure about his competitive success (or otherwise) at pipe? a neighbouring website suggests he won the pipe masters trials in 1999

Sublimey Tuesday, 25 Jun 2024 at 06:19 am new

I also read that he won it too

stunet Tuesday, 25 Jun 2024 at 07:43 am new

how da eff did you even verify this lol i searched everywhere (including, but not limited to, the second page of google results!) and couldn't find anything!

stunet Tuesday, 25 Jun 2024 at 10:13 am new

Ha...private database. The search function wigged out on me yesterday but today I can see in 1999 he was beaten by Hoyo in Round 4 10.00 to 9.50 - he knocked out Taj in Round 3 - and in 2006 he lost in Round 3, finishing behind AI and Roy Powers.
