Archive Film Night

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Swellnet Sessions

This friday night, McTavish Surfboards are hosting a film night at their Byron Bay factory.

On show will be footage rescued from the vaults by the Surf Film Archive. It'll be played on the screen in the carpark, with a Q&A between Bobby Mac and Murray Paterson from Headland also taking place.

Speaking of, Headland will provide a live soundtrack to the footage.

It's a free event, with beer supplied by Stone and Wood Brewing Co, the profits from which all go to the Surf Film Archive.

91 Centennial Circuit, Byron Bay. 7pm.

Free movie, with free beer.

Sounds like a winning combination to me.

udo Wednesday, 6 Dec 2023 at 10:27 am new

where does it say Free Beer ?

freeride76 Wednesday, 6 Dec 2023 at 10:25 am new

You're right Udo, I read it too quickly with motivated reasoning.

stunet Wednesday, 6 Dec 2023 at 10:36 am new

Yeah, just so there's no confusion: free entry, but you gotta pay for ales.

Worth noting here that Stone and Wood have donated them so all monies go to supporting the Surf Film Archive.

the only way you could drink that shit is if it was free

freeride76 Wednesday, 6 Dec 2023 at 11:23 am new

Stone and Wood?

Pacific Ale is really nice off the tap.

It was great back in the day before they had Murbah, it's a shadow of it's former self now, boring shit lager compared to the sweet passionfruit it used to be. We used to drive around stores just to get the couple in stock back when it came in that carry 6-pack and the label was a different orange. Same with Stone Beer, Cloud Catcher etc. great beers for a while. It happens all the time when up-scaling. I haven't had a S&W in years but it's also quite common when corporates buy breweries out and ruin beers by skimping on the ingredients, Pirate Life's DIPA, Modus Operandi's Former Tennat Red IPA, etc. amazing when they were in those shit silver cans back in the day, now ruined to chase a profit.

Anyway, Archive Film Night good, S&W bad.

Cloud Catcher was a great drop.
Worked at the Bangalow Pub and many a good lock in with schooners of that one.

Panman Wednesday, 6 Dec 2023 at 01:29 pm new

AndyM Wednesday, 6 Dec 2023 at 01:46 pm new

Night out at McTavish surfboards?
Sweet!
I've got my ironic Greenough-style bowl cut, my button up floral shirt that's a touch too small, and a white captain's hat if I'm feeling particularly jaunty :)

gromfull Wednesday, 6 Dec 2023 at 01:57 pm new

Ha hah Andy, it will be hypsters paradise complete with competing man buns and who does the coolest shaka

Island Bay Wednesday, 6 Dec 2023 at 05:29 pm new

And the new, ultra topical Patagonia keffiyeh. Part of their high end Activist Line.

Some say they're living in a leftie glass bubble :)

AndyM Wednesday, 6 Dec 2023 at 10:52 pm new

Yeah I guess the kids need to buy a personality somewhere these days.

AndyM Wednesday, 6 Dec 2023 at 04:04 pm new

It's all about being lighthearted while still taking yourself very seriously.
And it's about coming together and being an individual, as well as putting on your uniform and not conforming.

freeride76 Wednesday, 6 Dec 2023 at 04:16 pm new

hahahahahah.
So I'll see you there at 6 ?

AndyM Wednesday, 6 Dec 2023 at 05:41 pm new

With bells on.
And maybe a nose ring.
And what's more "in" at the moment, what should I drive, my 60 Series wagon or my 75 Series Troopy??
Such a dilemma.

tubeshooter Wednesday, 6 Dec 2023 at 10:24 pm new

More importantly, what's going on the roof racks, and how many retro boards can you strap on to make an impression?.
Might want to ditch the razor for the next couple of days too.
And maybe install a set of fire twirling sticks instead of the max trax.

RockyIsland Thursday, 7 Dec 2023 at 08:37 am new

4wds with Max Strax strapped to the roof is the modern equivalent of the 70s Highway surfer with the elevated 45 degree board racks bolted on.
Such a slur in the 70s....F Off you "Highway"
Seeing brand new never used orange Max Trax bolt ons at school drop offs inner city carparks etc etc.

Ha!

mr mick Thursday, 7 Dec 2023 at 05:44 am new

Hipsters & instas ‘stoned & wooden’ on the night……probably wouldn’t know one end of board to the other

PCS PeterPan Thursday, 7 Dec 2023 at 10:02 am new

So jaded people !
Please keep the 'hipster' comments coming , I'm loving them.
Think I'd rather avoid a gathering of surfies at a film night however I did get a seat to see Tom Curren when he was in Sydney . He is almost completely over surf 'culture' .

kimbo1 Thursday, 7 Dec 2023 at 10:09 am new

Speaking of surf culture , did anyone catch Floodlights at Repentance Creek ?

AndyM Thursday, 7 Dec 2023 at 10:21 am new

Can we define a surf culture or is it splintered and atomised like everything else?
Was it ever coherent?

Meris Thursday, 7 Dec 2023 at 11:16 am new

Can"t fault the build quality at Mctavish.
Had one for over 5 years , ridden a lot, still going strong.

freeride76 Thursday, 7 Dec 2023 at 11:25 am new

I had one come off the roof at 110km/hr on the Pac highway near the Iluka turnoff (on that big straight near the rest area).

no cover.

dinged up nose and tail but repaired as good as new.

very solid build.

bob light Wednesday, 13 Dec 2023 at 06:08 pm new
