Even with paying $150/week cash, and say rent is worth $150/week and food $100/week, that's a long way short of minimum wage. What a goose.

$400/25hrs= $16 an hour hardly worth it but doesn't look like he broke any rules.
$450/25hrs=$18 after tax.

The add doesn't say anything about 25 hours, in fact it goes on to say that couples are welcome but the $150 a week stays the same. Haha paying two people to work for a week for 150 bucks plus board. Check out the guys property portfolio, you reckon he's doing it tough ? He's happy to accept a significant wage and a significant pension and other perks from the taxpayer, blab on about penalty rates and he advertises to pay people $3.75 an hour.

Are you greens voter barley? Do you use $3.75 labour to pick your beans?

"He says he made up the difference and paid above minimum wage requirements [based on advice from a payroll services company] and by requiring only 25 hours of work a week"

Thats where I got the 25hrs from Tim Foil.

tim foilat Friday, 20 May 2016 at 08:43 am

Yeah the article says that but the add doesn't, I don't believe it, typical politician trying to spin things over after the fact. If he was expecting the au pair or couple to work 25 hours a week the add would have specified, it didn't. Most work adds I've read offer an hourly rate or some mention of how many hours you will be working, full time or part time. In the backpacker/ foreign worker scene it's easy to get away with. Farms are full of slave labour like this, but this guy is standing in parliament describing himself as a protector of penalty rates

Didn't see the add but wouldn't surprise me. Exploitation of labour is problematic in farming yet the whole thing with being a primary producer seems to soften the backlash. Whats more concerning is organisations that are supposed to protect and improve workers entitlements such as the Shop, Distributive & Allied Employees' Association are selling out their members with poor pay deals. Its no wonder union membership is low in these industries.

I'm not a fan of Labor but can you see a contradiction in what you've said here? Trying to keep people happy but not doing the right thing by the country?

I think you and I may have different definitions of what a country is...

And the Greens are the only ones looking beyond the end of their nose.

No it's not a contradiction that's what i meant, that's labors problem a lot of the time instead of making the decision they believe in they try to please everyone obviously they want too please the majority, but these days minority groups are so vocal they also try to please them too which is a problem for them because it doesn't work because you cant keep everyone happy.

The balance of a good government is one doing whats best for the country and at the same time keeping the majority happy, if your lucky they are sometimes the same thing but sometimes not.

Liberals don't have this problem so much because they rarely try to please minority groups, although im not a Liberal voter i respect that, they have the balls to do what they think is correct.

Lets not even talk about the Greens the Greens are the biggest hoax they are suppose to be green but do they even have a policy that deals with the issue of unsustainable population growth?
Which along with global warming is or should be the biggest Green issue of our time.

And by the 'country', I mean we, the people, ALL of us, as well as the actual country, the geography, the environment, and also our culture, our shared vision of who WE are and who we want to be, now and into the future.

Fire away.

indo-dreaming Friday, 20 May 2016 at 06:57 pm

I don't want to be a defender of liberal governments but they have done plenty of good things as have labor governments that's why we are still one of the luckiest countries on earth anyone who has traveled knows this is true, sometimes it's just about keeping a balance, many like to think things cant change and we are immune to shit going bad but it could all turn to shit real quick if not managed correctly, so the reality is both Liberal and Labor governments have done a pretty good job really....oh and from a economy perspective we have gone about 25 years without a recession.

Ghandi said "A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members."

Indo, by minorities do you mean Indigenous, gay, those that need health care and social security?

Again, I'm no fan of Labor but at least they act like there are people beside the wealthy and upwardly mobile. LNP have no empathy, no soul. You don't have to be a bleeding heart, you just have to be a little bit human.
You're right when you say that the Libs don't try to please minorities and it's disappointing to see that you think this is necessarily respectable.
I agree wholeheartedly with you when you talk about unsustainable population, it's the elephant that no politician anywhere wants to tackle, it's a hospital pass.
Unfortunately I think it's reasonable to say that while basically any business, anyone involved in construction or real estate has any lobbying power, Australia will continue to have a high rate of population increase.
The ABS reckons that Australia's population grows by 300,000 per year - that's more than a new Adelaide every 5 years.
