If you’re so cosmopolitan, BB , and you think think that it’s no issue to flood and overwhelm Australia’s population with immigrants and foreign cultures.....then why do you insist that the Irish can’t just move into the future and forget ther silly sectarian war ?

Why do you grant them the indulgence to foster centuries old grievances when they should just be embracing one another?

We are all one people remember?

You are so dismissive of nationalism, yet you cry rivers over the troubles.

I suggest anyone arguing against the basic tenet of Blowin's 2.02 comment fly over to Auckland, right now between 70-80% of all people walking the streets of the central business and shopping district are from those countries. Whatever is happening there it's not balanced, they aren't tourists.

vj macrobullshit are unreliable. If you drill down into the issue you will usually find things are much more nuanced than their journalism suggest. The reality is that suggesting the economic changes were caused by BREXIT would require much more information than is currently available. At the very least you would need to wait until it has actually happened. Consider this from one of the links they provide.

"It has been suggested high employment levels are forcing organisations to pay more to recruit and retain staff.

But some experts also believe firms are hiring more staff as a response to continued Brexit uncertainty, rather than in spite of it.
" In some industries, hiring cheap labour is seen as a less risky and costly option than spending on long-term investment in equipment, technology or other plans to improve productivity or expand production in the future.
As Reuters notes, “the surge in jobs could reflect nervousness among businesses who have cut investment, making them more likely to hire workers who can be sacked in the event of a downturn in the economy.”

MB have the ability to put the numbers behind the lived experience of young Australian-born (particularly in cities), rather than castigate them in a tirade of political correctness for any concerns they have. There lies the attraction, and any party following this line will have a goldmine of votes. I'll make one election prediction: this one will see a historically large amount of "anything but LibLabGrn", and informal votes. We'll see how this prediction pans out. We're not at our 'Trump/Brexit/Bolsonaro/Duterte/Kurz/Salvini/Orban' moment until after 6+ years of Labor to come.

AndyM Wednesday, 24 Apr 2019 at 05:32 pm

"rather than castigate them in a tirade of political correctness for any concerns they have"

Blindboy, that was the point of posting that link to the interview about cosmopolitanism - people should not feel shame in doing anything as reasonable as looking after their own backyard first. And as you also pointed out, this does not in any way mean that at the same time we can't have concerns for others and continue to think and act globally.

And Guy Smiley is right, Auckland is a real eye opener.

blindboy Wednesday, 24 Apr 2019 at 06:08 pm

Of course anecdotes rarely tell the full story.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Auckland

AndyM Wednesday, 24 Apr 2019 at 06:14 pm

Are you pointing out the fact that 25% of Auckland residents are from an Asian background?

Or this?

"The proportion of Asians and other non-European immigrants has increased during the last decades due to immigration,[6] and the removal of restrictions directly or indirectly based on ethnicity. Immigration to New Zealand is heavily concentrated towards Auckland (partly for job market reasons). This strong focus on Auckland has led the immigration services to award extra points towards immigration visa requirements for people intending to move to other parts of New Zealand.

In any case, it doesn't change what GS and I can clearly see walking around the Auckland CBD where the % is way higher than a quarter.

AndyM Wednesday, 24 Apr 2019 at 06:22 pm

"If “ cosmopolitans ( wankers ) want to live in a country which is open boarders then they can move to one."

FFS Blowin, listen to the interview - it says the exact opposite of what you've said above and pretty much totally supports your point of view.
Old mate Anthony Appiah says "I can't help everyone in the world...Most of our ways of helping other people are local. The best ways of making sure other people are covered...is to make sure there are lots and lots of different nations...all focusing their attention on local things."

Well this is all a bit sad and pathetic...

"...Hello! “Supported by our opposition ...”. When and how did federal Labor commit its support? Where was the rigorous Labor public or, indeed, behind closed doors, scrutiny of this proposal to spend so much money on an institution that has, because it is Anzac’s shrine of worship, been quarantined from so many of the budget imposts that have clipped other national cultural institutions including the national library, archives, museum, gallery and portrait gallery, and the Museum of Australian Democracy?"

Yep

"...As Nelson himself said of the potential cost in that cruisy interview: “Whatever the cost is, as one man said to me, ‘We’ve already paid. We’ve paid in blood, and whatever the government spends on the Australian War Memorial ... will never be enough’.”"

pffffttt, haven't we totally overdone the anzac thing already? Like really really overdone it to the point of it being nauseating and outright glorifying?

".. What emotive rubbish. Tell that to today’s medically discharged veterans, some of whom are fighting protracted legal battles for compensation for their service-related injuries. Tell that to the veterans of all our wars who might think that the story of Anzac has already (thanks to a $600 million Australian spend on commemorating the first world war) artificially been inflated to eclipse the other stories that were more formative to Australian nationhood."

Yep yep yep, sort out the veterans first. For the poor vietnam dudes, its just a never ending fuck over...

Gulf dudes are probably being done over too.

"...Right now, in the midst of an election campaign where the major parties are playing an unedifying game of deficit chicken, the Labor Party ought to show some spine and withdraw, or qualify, its support for blowing $500 million on an unnecessary expansion of the war memorial.

Process demands it."

Fuck yeh!

Both sides are being fucked up about this, especially with the budger in such a mess, but labor really don't need to be so pathetic and follow a really dumb lead from fucking scomo, the aussie trashdag capitaliser!

They'll be supporting the bounty 'reconciliation' re-enactment next...

I've never really liked 'first dog on the moon', I just think it's really never that funny. Too many words and not enough humour for a 'comic' for my liking.

I suspect that's because they're too busy making political points, and not busy enough beimg funny. Which is exactly the case with this one. But it's a good political point they're making. And that point is, that bland bill, that still bill, that I'll just hide over here while the LNP self destructs bill, has gone too far with his small target centist canpaaign.

I'm thinking if even the guardian thinks you've gone too far with your small target centrist campaign....well, you've probably gone way too far with your small target centrist canpaign....

Sari Club Bombing site was or is valued around $1-2m. (Basic car yard size)
A loose consortium of BPP / Oz Govt offered to match any reasonable price.
Sadly no official offer was ever made by any 'Oz + Govt + Bali Consortium'.

Nightclub Landowner always upped the price for purchase by Australians.
Entry level $4.8m > $7.2m > $26m even offering a 1/2 price $10m same day deal?
As it stands now...about $5m to lease top floor of his new Night Club?..(Rude!)

Understand owner would be pressured not to stain town with icon of guilt.
He basically needs enough to start a new life elsewhere...Damned either way!

Bali Govt could have compensated owner then gift land to Oz via land swap.
Thus absolving any guilt trip on Night Club owner or shame on Indonesia.
Again! Oz never batted for victims with decent diplomatic options for Peace Park.
Oz election bombsite Auction sees Labor vs Liberal bid $50m for a Peace cubicle.

You should be unquestionably grateful.

Calling a person who’d return to war to defend his country stupid....what the fuck is wrong with you ?

And this is after you’ve tried to impress the horrors of war on us with more internet links. The bloke KNEW what he was going into first hand , not by reading some poem from the comfort of his safe home , and he still went back to protect the rest of his people.

Think on that dickhead.

blindboy Saturday, 27 Apr 2019 at 08:26 am

Blowin do you think you could possibly tone it down? Yes I have responded in kind at times but virtually everything you post now is aggressive and insulting. It just discourages people from posting. Kind of like shouting at someone. No-one wants to cop the stuff you dish out for daring to disagree with you so the discussion becomes less and less interesting. You say you do yoga, maybe meditate for a while before you post, then type it up in Pages, leave it for an hour and then see if you still feel so angry. Anger is really bad for your health and the health of those around you.

True zen but if you look back, with a couple of exceptions, I don't engage with him much anymore. If "baiting" includes disagreeing with him then what's the point? I mean lots of people, including me, have tried respectfully disagreeing but they still cop the abuse.

Yes , Sheepy.

It was Australia that many , many people died defending and many more were physically and emotionally broken doing the same.

But tell me again about the history of the war that you’ve learnt from the Internet 70 years after the event. Tell the fella who had his body and mind ruined by the Japanese how they weren’t a threat. Tell him how all those days spent fighting the Japs in the jungle were all a lark and he doesn’t understand history.

Whine about your sun damaged lips you got from surfing all day whilst belittling the efforts of those who lay screaming in foreign countries with their limbs blown off defending your country.

Tell them the fear they stared down was meaningless.

factotum Saturday, 27 Apr 2019 at 10:31 am

Blowin', why characterise your grandfather-in-law (is that a thing? I guess it is if you knew him and had a yarn and a beer etc etc) as "hard as nails"?

Enlisting after 1942 in the only war Australia has had any real existential reason to be involved in makes someone "hard as nails" and that point having to be made by grandsons by marriage?

BBs dad was "hard as nails" too, hey? He didn't say. Or feel the need.

Blowie, as someone who previously melted down after a melodramatic slapping incident in shitty surf (well, according to you), are you as "hard as nails"? I ask as a "weak cunt" (according to you)?

I guess when the Chinese or Indians or Muslims from wherever invade we'll find out, hey?

Or if there's an internal war, like the Spanish Civil War, say, we'll see who's who in the zoo. I'll be with the Republicans fighting the likes of you, hey?

Now go blow the froth off a couple. It's something you might actually be able to do,

Blow hard!

Blowin Saturday, 27 Apr 2019 at 10:41 am

Is this a joke ?

Do I really have to defend a bloke who went to war twice from a guy who thinks he’s done it rough cause he watches music acts where the lead singer spits on the crowd ?

You admire the attitude of a guy who throws shit at his fawning audience at a rock show , but you call someone who literally fought for the freedoms you enjoy as “ dumb as a bag of hammers “ despite never having met him.

Strange old world.

Blowin Saturday, 27 Apr 2019 at 10:57 am

The point of my telling you about his war record was to compliment the poems regarding the horrors of war.

Can you imagine fighting in Europe as a teenager , being gassed repeatedly in the trenches , assuming that you could be killed at any time . Seeing your mates die all around you. Then finally making it back home to sunny Australia.

The trauma you’d have to work out of your system. The mental and physical damage you had to overcome.

Then a couple of decades later . You’re older and far less recklessly courageous. You’ve started a family and believed that you’d maybe made it through the worst ......and then your very country and family is threatened.

So against every urge to remain with your loved ones you return to war. Only this time you know what’s coming. Surely that’s as brave as it gets ?

Fighting in the jungle this time against an enemy prepared to die in order to win. This isn’t swapping cigarettes with the other side during truces , this is cruel torture and merciless slaughter if you lose.

And your young daughter is a world away and her life depends on you succeeding.

Yes .....he’s hard as nails .

And for you to insult him is pretty fucked up. I’m not insulted personally, but you should really be embarrassed about your attitude.
