hey sheepy & SB, talk in The Age this morning that Captain Abbott is thinking of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic and throwing 1st mate Hockey overboard given they are expecting to get "poo-washed" in the Canning By-election. Apparently anything over a 6% swing sees Hockey tossed.

This strategy apparently "buys" Abbott time to Christmas and in January he will call a double dissolution election for March meaning parliament will not sit in 2016 before the election!

No agenda, no narrative, no mandate!

Double dissolution election.... man that is high stakes poker ... just think of the "fringe group" senators we could get like "Reclaim Australia" or anti gay marriage advocates.

Captain Abbott will do anything to keep power ... destroy his party and the country!!

Floyd... Abbott is praying for a terrorist attack on home soil IMO... He is trying everything to stoke the muslims AND the extreme right wing at the same time.... He is not bringing us together as a nation, but cutting wounds even deeper.... He is an absolute disgrace.... Keating was right..... "God help us"....

Indeed .... but do you reckon Morrison can shake the ticking time bomb of our refugee concentration camp program and all the human rights abuses. At some stage the lid has to be lifted and the truth told. I also note Morrison claims to be a good catholic boy.

Political witch-hunt? Nope, nope, nope, nothin' to see here...

The prime minister in the presser immediately before Heydon's decision to stay put:

"The trade union royal commission must go on; it absolutely must go on. Obviously what the commissioner does today is quite properly a matter for the commissioner but we’ve seen rorts, rackets and rip-offs exposed by this royal commission. We’ve seen an abundance of evidence of corruption and criminality ... the work of the royal commission is absolutely vital not just for our country as a whole. It’s vital for the future of the union movement; IT'S VITAL FOR THE FUTURE OF THE LABOR PARTY."

(note: this is the second time he's made explicit reference to the Labor party in regards to the RC. The first time was seen as a classic Captain's linguistic fuck-up. Nope, nope, nope...all part of Tones cunning plan, methinks. Cunning linguist, indeed)

yorkessurfer Monday, 31 Aug 2015 at 05:12 pm

I think Dyson Heydon staying on is a win for Labor. Let Tony's 'Captains Pick' sit in the hot seat for a bit longer hobbled like a wounded animal, his credibility and that of the Royal Commission in tatters.

As for Morrison and his record as Immigration Minister floyd, well there is fertile ground for Labor to have their own Royal Commisssion next year when they return to government. In fact I'm sure there would be grounds for several Royal Commissions into the conduct of Abbott and his government.

But I don't think this will happen.

I suspect Bill Shorten is mature enough to put a line under this grubby era of our political history and concentrate on getting the running of government and country back on track through good policy initiatives.
This may disappoint some on the left but as we saw in the U.S when Obama's Democrats returned to power after the dark years of the Bush era, the best revenge is to move on and run a successful administration.

It was a win/win situation... Heydon stays - people ask "how can he judge himself?"... "What a joke"...
Heyson steps down - Admission of bias....

Bronny getting us to pay for choppers...
Non bearded religious fundamentalists who run the Liberal Party saying gays are an abomination. The devil lives..
Gays still can't marry because "marriage is about children" ( yet 60yo divorcees can marry - it's "about children"???)....
People using the courts and correct legal avenues against coal mining are labelled "vigilantes" by attorney general - laws to be changed....
People opposed to China fee trade deal are publicly called "racists" and "economic terrorists"...
Deyson Heydon has to cancel attending a Liberal function.. 80+ million dollar enquiry left in tatters..
Heydon accused of bias - judges himself - finds himself "not guilty"..
Abbott denies asking USA if we could join in bombing Syria.. But join we will....
Border farce - Australian gestapo to pull people up, including holiday makers (gee....great for tourism) and check visas...
People power crushes border farce... Dutton goes missing... No one checks emails in Duttons office...
55 million dollar asylum deal with Cambodia collapses... Cambodia gets to keep the money... Farce...

Well, people.... Make sure you tune in next month, for more entertaining embarrassment, more international shame, insults, inciting minorities, crossing fingers for a home grown terrorist act just so the polls turn, in the most amazing reality show, called " Australia - our swill is swell!!"....Keep your eyes out for a smokin joe scapegoat, and guest appearance by Bill "me too - I'm a poll watcher" Shorten!!!!
Viewing that can't be missed!!!!!

Awesome! And that's just one month???

Hate to be pedantic but there were four refugees resettled in Cambodia so that wasn't a total failure, the price may have been more than the cost quoted in one of these threads re the cost of detaining legal refugees, I think someone put the figure at 250 or 150 k per annum per person that's a bit of blow out to 14 mil for each of these four who strangely were resettled despite coming by boat during the constant liberal shilling of 'no one who comes to australia by boat will be resettled.

They were voted in without having developed policies, releasing a costing of their policies the day before the election. People voted for these tossers without even knowing what there policies were or how they were to be costed, no scrutiny at all and it shows in the way their term has played out, fumble, fumble, fumble.

floyd Monday, 31 Aug 2015 at 08:46 pm

@YS .. yes my hope is on policy also for Labor & Shorten .... but, when the election button is pressed Shorten and his entire shadow front bench and the party better be ready to run with well thought out clearly articulated policies, no bumbling no stutters just statements like "this is what I stand for and this is what we want to do to help the country" otherwise Abbott might get a 2nd gig.

Perversely, a 2nd Abbott government would ensure that lot would be throw into the political wilderness for a decade or more :)

sypkan Monday, 31 Aug 2015 at 10:12 pm

imagine what people in developing countries think when they hear we spent 14 million dollars on each of four refugees for one year?

no matter what they rhink it is bloody disgusting and morally reprehensible, we could have pimped up an African refugee camp beyond the wildest dreams of it's inhabitants with that sort of money.

I wouldn't be too presumptuous yorksurfer and friends about labor winning the next election. I certainly couldn't vote for them...yet, they are still ro show me anything that gives me confidence in their ability to actually run the country. while they may not damage our reputation as much as abbott, oz is in for difficult times ahead whoever is driving the bus, and we need some good ideas beyond selling citizenship and farms to sort shit out, which is all both sides seem to offer.

I'm 95% sure I'll vote the same as last tme, which is 1 nick xenophon 2 the greens, then a count down to labor then liberal last, unless turnball gets a run, which is looking less and less likely by the day with all this talk of morrison.

no donkey vote please daverave, you're smarter than that, and any considered vote is better than that,

while our democracy certainly isn't anymore the praised one talked about in that kirra article. it's not to be taken for granted, talk to a refugee, they'll school you up!

not meaning to labor bash there....again. just pointing stuff out, because the guardian commentators are talking like it's in the bag, a little foolish I think...more like labor need to pull something out of the bag

if they don't step it up there is a real possibility of another three years of abbott, imagine the smug look on the cunts face if he actually won again...I cannot bear to see that

yorkessurfer Tuesday, 1 Sep 2015 at 07:08 am

@sypkan- I was baiting when I said "when Labor return to government next year". Was hoping to get a bight from one of the usual Liberal mouthpieces on here. Instead I got you? Haha

Agree Labor aren't home yet. They have their work cut out for them and don't have the main stream media giving them a free ride or corporate lobby groups writing policy for them like the other side has. But that's the way it's always been.

I know Labor are working hard behind the scenes at putting together a range of policies to move the country forward. It will come down to whether Bill Shorten has the ability to sell them to the Australian public in the face of another Murdoch scare campaign.

But at the end of the day if voters in this country aren't willing to look closely at what the alternatives are and allow themselves to be manipulated again then we will continue to get the governments we deserve.

onya daverave, I hope your serious about running, anything rhat challenges the status quo is a good thing even if it's a long shot. sorry to bite about the donkey vote thing but it annoys me that australians always joke about it. no matter how bad the major parties are there are too many quality independents to waste your vote, fuk even a vote for clive is better than a donkey vote, imagine if we could get 30% independents, the place might even work. tony windsor did an excellent interview on RN about the dismal state of oz politics, basically the gist was too many career politicians on both sides corrupting the place and bringing no real world experience. hopefully windsor comes back, this dismal state has almost motivated him enough. geez even lambe is a shining ray of hope.

I hope your right yorksurfer, your definitely right billy boy has to step up, but so do the rest of them, the only ray of hope from labor for me is penny wong, seriously undervalued, she should talk for them all!! no country deserves another three years of abbott, I tried to give him a go but he's just becoming bloody dangerous. interesting hanging with overseas crew, it takes them a day or two to suss out if you're a racist redneck, but they cannot wait to ask about abbott and his policies, there must be some really bad press running overseas about Oz, very much like that article someone posted earlier.

this 7/11 thing is hilarious, a little bit of the ugly american extreme capitalism right here in oz, its like the simpsons kwike mart. when I first moved east about twenty years ago the whole 7/11 thing seemed weird then (no 7/11's west of the GDR) like some reverse racism was happening then with indians and the like running the show, supplying cheap hotdogs and donuts to the masses, just what a doley travel bum needs. now it's clear how they did stuff so cheaply, I cant believe it's taken twenty years for them to be caught out. buy you salmonella dog early in the day, before it looks like an 80 year old penis, ewww! but not too early they're last nights pisshead dogs that weren't scoffed down in a drunken stupor

The only debt and deficit disaster on Abbott's mind these days is his government's total lack of available political capital. Since the 2014 grossly unfair budget the piggy bank of public goodwill has been leaking increasingly faster ...... f**K up after political f**K up.

I agree with sheepy, the only thing that will save Abbott now is a terrorist attack on home soil. The private polling of Canning must be showing they are in for a massive caning ........ I can just see Fairfax's jihad front page now ........ ABBOTT'S CANNING CANING.

old-dog Wednesday, 2 Sep 2015 at 07:05 pm

I'm afraid once a campaign starts Abbott will wipe the floor with little Willy Shorten. Abbott has brain washed the general public into thinking Labor is financially incompetent and cant be trusted with the economy. Without a strong leader Labors is like a ship with no rudder. The media grabs are so quick these days Shorten needs to master the three word slogan or no one will hang around long enough for him to get to the point.

i think u have gathered by now that i dont take things too seriously, especially myself
labor already hold my electorate and i have a good relationship with sitting member.
my talks have really convinced me that the federal and state seats will be all sorted around here.
my real passion about govt, is self governance, and the closest we have to that is local govt.
so as well as having more interest to me, more people know and have met me personally in the tweed shire and i believe i have the best chance of implementing good changes here- as well as not having to go to canberra or sydney.
it also allows me to run without any co-ercion or impedimentation by the two major parties who would both love a crack at me because of the grief i have caused both of them when they were up to their shenanigans.
like as pointed out, it would be good to see some sense of vision being shown at the federal level and i have made it clear, i believe investing in securing and harvesting water and sunshine to provide agriculture plus other industries could create economic growth plus also allow future areas of sustainable development of job creation and environmental and agricultural cohesion-hemp being one area as would rail freight.
oz needs to ensure it's food supply-worldwide population growth means food is valuable commodity.

Our submission looked at the government's Cost Benefit Analysis, which estimates only 88 Australian seafarer jobs will remain under the department’s preferred option for policy change. This represents a loss of 1,089 Australian seafarer jobs, or 93 per cent of the current workforce. Full submission here: https://theaus.in/1VApaku

War on working class ... Please explain. I hope you don't condone what the unions did the cleaners down. The HSU workers ? I don't believe Shorty knows what he's doing but merely a puppet. Re seafaring jobs - I do know the wharves are becoming highly mechanised and automated. On the high seas, I am sure we are loosing out to foreign registered ships. I do agree that the Libs better start some more large scale infrastructure spending.
