Hi All ,
after a bit of your vast wisdom here , got myself a tiny 5'8 fish for small mushy waves , in 78 kgs and currently have fcs g'3 s in it but find them to lack drive and speed anyone have any suggestions on what would be more suitable fins for speed / drive in small waves , old school fcs plugs in the board tri fin .
help would be greatly appreciated .

The best drive ive found for multi finned boards is from H2s....in the front plugs ....i'll use M5s or 7s as the trail fins....this combo works well for gutless stuff.....goes fine in the grunt too.Indo fins do them for about 50+delivery...lots of colours too....FCS twin tabs.

Indofins -Reverse D is a interesting looking fin .

Small mushy waves ? Also try no fins you'll go even more faster

mothart Thursday, 20 Nov 2014 at 03:52 pm new

I use to love YUs in the small gutless stuff, just felt like had more zap.
Don't know about in a fish though, and if they still make em in FCS.

Like Quadzilla I've also found H2s are great in quad setups for small waves. The lead fins have got more cant then any other fin I've used and that creates lift. At least I assume it creates lift, it certainly feels like that. And H2s definitely have their own idiosyncratic feel: touchy, unanchored. I ran a thruster set in my standard shorty when they first came out and gave up on them, they spun out too much. However, used as quads and for waves two foot and under they're great.

H2s at front or back in quad setup stu?? I threw mine out too - were pretty weird.

caml Thursday, 20 Nov 2014 at 05:56 pm new

Rather big in front and rather small in rear

bishmann Thursday, 20 Nov 2014 at 06:18 pm new

Hi all thanks for the info the board is a 5 8 fireball fish thruster so I'm after a thruster set up

indo-dreaming Thursday, 20 Nov 2014 at 08:43 pm new

My fav go too fins are

I was using H2s front and back - it was a quad set. Lately I've scrapped the fronts for standard fins (can't remember what kind) and left the rear fins in. The H2s were great in really small stuff but I got sick of swapping.

Anyone bought a set of Prosea fins off eBay? They're $35-$40 as opposed to the $100-$150.

I bought a set the other day but would be interested in hearing someone elses thoughts on 'em.

I bought a set of prosea fins for my son and was impressed with fins and service. not as good as the real thing but good value for money.

Udo, I have a set of these that I use in a small wave quad kneeboard. I find that they are very maneuverable, don't slide out but lack a bit of drive.

They're definitely worth having as an option

pointy Friday, 19 Dec 2014 at 07:15 pm new

I just got a set of C-drive fins. They're the best fins I've ever had. Heaps of drive and very maneuverable

grazza Saturday, 20 Dec 2014 at 06:21 am new

Ditto on the C-Drives. I have a Dick Van Straaleen quad fish that I was really struggling with until I replaced the fins with a set of c-drives. Instantly became my favourite small wave board ever. As pointy says, great drive but very loose - the holy grail combo for fins. Love them - don't know why they're not way more popular.

hem-stret Saturday, 20 Dec 2014 at 06:36 am new

allround thruster setup I'd say the JF kinetik fins bishmann. maybe the am2 fcs. i think some rake helps in the mush.....i've also used setups like quadzilla, using the tom carrolls fcs blue stripe 6% cant with dxl powerbase rear to good effect small to mid size and powerful waves.

quadzilla Saturday, 20 Dec 2014 at 06:54 am new

another good option is the MR+Trailer combo....and/or install trail quad plugs for better speed

hem-stret Saturday, 20 Dec 2014 at 08:01 am new

I liked my MRs but I kept breaking them on turns...i think there's only so much 'tip' pressure the double plugs can handle..i kept all the stabiliser fins though, handy....kinectic phase threes are nice, as is shapers mg2's surprisingly. they are really thick foil fins like the original goods thick foil fcs (basically just a M5 but fatter). i keep looking at the leading edge thinking they would be anchors but they go well..

I think the reason that they are not more popular is that they look so different to what people are used to. They are good enough to catch on though.

EZ3 fins by Cheyne Horan has anybody tried these ?

caml Monday, 16 Mar 2015 at 09:44 am new

No never heard of them udo can you tell us about them ?

stunet Monday, 16 Mar 2015 at 10:03 am new

I'm also curious how they go. For mine, they don't look like they'd have much drive. Here's a bit of info Camel:

I found out on the weekend that you can bend futures fins and they don't bend back. I was looking at my fins after a surf and thinking - there's something funky with that right hand one. It's bent over like a banana.

caml Monday, 16 Mar 2015 at 11:39 am new

Thanks . Actually googled them immediately . They look good , ive dabbled in that style a little bit . Very efficient foil . The shapes like the base of a wing keel fin but without wings . The wingless keel ! @mk1 are your fins plastic or fibre or hexcore or techflex ? Did you bend them with your power surfing or having your tie down straps too tight on a hot day when boards on racks ? I think you can bend any sort of fin not just futures if you subject them to conditions they arent meant to cope with

stunet Monday, 16 Mar 2015 at 11:41 am new

What about the lack of rake though Camel? Reckon there'd be a drawback in that?

caml Monday, 16 Mar 2015 at 01:46 pm new

Stu i dunno mate . Need to try em ! Theres always suprises with surfing equipment . Cheyne has the credentials to make different fins go

mk1 Monday, 16 Mar 2015 at 02:35 pm new

Caml - they are the standard hexcore AM2 futures which seem to be fibreglass outer, so I was surprised how bent it was (maybe its a plastic outer?). Definitely not heat or tie down related so that leaves power surfing...

Actually i think I must have run into something but definitely bent significantly and not looking like it will straighten well.

udo Monday, 16 Mar 2015 at 03:03 pm new

Mk1 got a pic of the fin.

mk1 Monday, 16 Mar 2015 at 04:52 pm new

Udo - in a couple of days I will. I tried straitening it out but it wasn't staying all the way back. most of it came out though.

Anyone seen these weird fins before ?

mothart Sunday, 19 Apr 2015 at 08:59 pm new

Excuse the drop-in udo, but..

Getting a board glassed with glass-in shapers fins 'mojo'.

Anybody tested these puppy's out?

wingnut2443 Monday, 20 Apr 2015 at 07:57 am new

mothart, I have used the 'mojo' fins by shapers, not as glass'ins, but, as the dual tab version in a general 'all rounder' thruster board with a squash tail.

I found them to be a good 'all rounder' fin, but kept exploring and ended up with the Asher Pacey AP02 as side fins and the Mojo as the rear / centre fin. I found a while back I like more upright side fins.

As a glass in they'd be a lot stiffer in the base, so would expect a different feel. Perhaps improve them as the flex difference over the fin would change.

Why are you going glass-in?

mothart Monday, 20 Apr 2015 at 09:59 am new

Why glass-ins WN, why not? Do you think they are inferior?

2 out of the last 3 boards I've have for the point near where I live have had glass-ins, they have felt smooth & held in, & there is no second guessing if you change fins, the board is either going to go or not go, no fucking around trying to tweak stuff. It's the type of wave you don't want to second guess yourself or your equipment.

udo Thursday, 25 Jun 2015 at 07:21 pm new

Wingnut, have you tried C - Drive fins , I know you play around with toe and cant angles and wondering with the c cutout in the CDrives you changed angles, toe /cluster position.
Brutus, do you use a different setup formula for C Drives ?

thermalben Thursday, 25 Jun 2015 at 09:17 pm new

I haven't given the C-Drive fins a go but would love to try 'em out.. they look really good.

caml Friday, 26 Jun 2015 at 06:19 am new

im currently using c drives on 2 bds . they feel really good . i believe theyre a valid design . with a small tip they turn easy & have less drag than standard fin then a long base which has properties like holding in good , down the line speed & low drag becos theyre shallow in the depth of water . made with quality fibre panel & good foils .

wesley Friday, 26 Jun 2015 at 07:45 am new

Yeah I actually had a quick look at those C Drive fins the other week. I think a bloke in Torquay makes them. The idea of them makes sense and ya never really hear anything bad about them. They'd be very interesting to try

udo Friday, 26 Jun 2015 at 08:05 am new

Just had a look a friends set of Cdrives [large size] ,He swears by them and will never go back to any other fin shape for small board and bigger stepup, raved about how good they are in his 7'2 gun ...retains good drive but comes off the top as loose as a grovell board..his quote "the Mercedes Benz of fins"
Build quality is fantastic...$99 delivered .....Im ordering today.

udo Friday, 26 Jun 2015 at 09:44 am new

Just stole this question from Freeride that he posted on another site

Has anyone tried C-Drives in channel bottoms ?

bigtreeman Friday, 26 Jun 2015 at 06:07 pm new

Last weekend I was listening to Peter Ware of Friar Tuck fame, (invented the four fin in the 70s). He has channels in the board he was surfing on the weekend and uses high aspect fins. I had c-drives on my board and he described to me why C-drives are wrong.
C-drives try to do two things, the flat along the board gives direction and the rest of the fin gives grip for turns, but he feels they don't achieve either. Hey I've used my c-drives for years, but now I'll try some different fins and see if it helps with my surfing.

udo Friday, 26 Jun 2015 at 07:38 pm new

You've used C-Drives for years ... so I guess they work o.k. any surfer would pick up if there working for them or not in 5 or 10 surfs
the flat along the board gives direction and the rest of the fin gives grip for turns ...but he feels they don't achieve either...can you ask Peter what the fuck they might do then ?
Brutus makes short ,guns ,and tow boards and swears by them .

simba Friday, 26 Jun 2015 at 09:28 pm new

Well im sure Peter Ware rides knee boards which are totally a different kettle of fins again, but i stand to be corrected.I had c drives years ago and really liked them but sold them with a board and sort of forgot about them but maybe i might invest in another set.

brutus Saturday, 27 Jun 2015 at 08:51 am new

been using C-Drives for years...we first used them in Tow bds...and nothing else comes close to the drive and the ability to short radius turns.at high speeds.

We then started using them in s/bds and when we worked out where to put them had exactly the same results.......and just to make sure when we get new bds I like to firstly test plastic fins, then go to fiberglass fins...and after a couple of weeks then put the c-drives in......and everytime bar none.....we get the same result.....faster,drivier and turns on a dime.......

for the last 2 hawaiin seasons RCJ has used them in all his 9 0 -10 ' guns swears by them....and the guns I made for Noah Johnson for Jaws , Waimea , Avalanche and Himalayas...he swears by the double foiled quads...which I have just started using....

I use smalls.....as my bds have a fair bit of concave and edge which means I can surf smaller fins as I get a lot of lift and drive from the shape......

stunet Saturday, 27 Jun 2015 at 08:57 am new

Hey MC,

They don't appear to make a C-Drive quad set. Are you just using two rear fins from a thruster set?

thermalben Saturday, 27 Jun 2015 at 09:02 am new

I think C-Drive have quad sets Stu - Ross had them last time I saw. I'm sure I recall seeing them on their website a while back (I remember at the time wanting to get them for the new Quad I'd just bought).

Noah and I have set of quadide fins that are all double foiled...these are for bigger waves,,smaller waves use a flat sided set up to head high....soon as its serious ,,,double foild allaround........with 4 degrees in the sides an 2 degrees on the backs,,s
S sides xs back quads
