Watch: Ryan Callinan // The future is certain

For some reason it's easy to overlook Ryan Callinan as a big hitter, much easier to dismiss him as a technician - someone who gets the job done with minimal flair and won't overcharge you for it.

Similarly, it's easy to forget that, for anyone outside of Newcastle, R'Cal came onto the radar via the 'Bong movie 'Blow Up', in particular the huge inverted backside three-oh that closed his part.

He's always been capable of the Big Move, but for whatever reason we look elsewhere for a hit.

Jack Taylor has edited together a bunch of Ryan's waves from 2019, and it's a potent reminder of just what the big fella is capable of.

Making that turn at 20 seconds in just looks impossible. Love how he dissappears into the spray then reappears standing. Awesome.

That backhand reo/one foot spin (in old mate's face who's about to drop in) at 3:35 that's synched with the music had me "wow" out loud. Hope he goes to another level this year

Craig Wednesday, 11 Mar 2020 at 03:03 pm new

Haha yeah that and the 3x combo on the left before 1:45.

Dare I say a little Luke Egan-esque?

mcbain Thursday, 12 Mar 2020 at 09:55 am new

Was just thinking about how I was going to write the same post. The forehand carves and roundhouses most definitely.

Westofthelake Thursday, 12 Mar 2020 at 09:42 pm new

Good call Zen,again.
Combo of a carver, slasher, and ripper.
And a novocastrian.
Good luck RC.

The Wozz's podcast w Dave Prodan is pretty softball generally, but the RCal interview episode gives good insight into the calibre of this fine fella.

Ted from the moon Wednesday, 11 Mar 2020 at 09:52 pm new

Yep. Prodan is a wus at times. Especially that Felipe one. He seems to be improving though - rapidly. His one with MF this week was good. At least he lets the subject talk without constantly interrupting. You could hear in his breathing that he wanted to interrupt and join the conversation and steer it back to his notes.....but he held off a lot. And some good insight was learned. MF seemed super relaxed with him. Actually they all do. Maybe that is his real asset. He just needs to let them talk - the joy of the long interview. Something you never get in the written form or vastly edited TV/ video clip.

He's an awesome surfer and seems like an awesome bloke, so good luck to him I reckon.

But Vimeo is the worst fucking platform to release videos on, particularly for anyone with a sub-par internet connection (i.e. 85% of the population). 15 seconds of action, followed by 25 seconds of watching the dial spin, rinse and repeat...

God bless aussie goofie charges - Egan, Occy, Carrol now RCal - good company

memlasurf Thursday, 12 Mar 2020 at 01:35 pm new

Yep the man is gifted and uses his buttocks and legs for power keeping his back nice and straight which is a good sign for longevity. Really throws everything at it which is similar to the Zilllas which is what the wossel are keen on. Be good to see how he goes in maxing Chopes and Gland.

Ash Barridge Thursday, 12 Mar 2020 at 02:41 pm new

The vertical foam climb at 1:00.. Mental.. Reminiscent of Occy @ Bells

Blowin Thursday, 12 Mar 2020 at 08:28 pm new

That was freakin amazing. Bastard’s the total package.

akthommo Friday, 13 Mar 2020 at 06:59 pm new

Love watching Ryan almost casual approach to surfing. But he's got the moves too. Almost Fanning like, but better. (He's a goofy, which is a step up from 'natural')

The MIDdleman. Friday, 13 Mar 2020 at 11:39 pm new

Any one of those turns in my lifetime and I'd be happy.

That power tweak at the end with so much traction is even better than my imagination allows me to mindsurf.

That back hand is incredible!!! Can’t wait to see R cal charge Margs/Nth point/Box

Sportsbet Tip... allow for the J Curve + that weird double trouble thingy.
2019 Ryan had sand kicked in his face by Jordy, Julian, Jeremy, Jessie, Jack
2019 Ryan's 2nd date disasters FT x 2 / GC x 2 / GM x 2

2020 Julian now x 2 (Pretty much yer standard jealous Surf chix voodoo doll).
