Watch: April Rules at Pipeline

There's a lot to enjoy in this clip, not least the opening wave of Derek Ho getting bucked and responding with, firstly one foot off the board, then winding up the windows, all as the lip pitches menacingly overhead.

It was filmed during the recent late season run of swell at Pipe. We're told late season takes the heat off crowd numbers but the 2:05 mark shows that's a relative statistic - someone can always ditch a board in front of you.

Surf trivia: The cheeseball rock/jazz tune is taken from a video of the 1984 Pipeline Masters, when Derek came second to Joey Buran.

Matching the cheeseball toon to the video:

'84 Pipe Masters.

haha. I've got the original video of this stashed with a suitcase full of others in a mates roof on the GC.(i'm sure the humidity and cockroaches are helping the ageing process), Cheesy but cool interviews and big surf for it. Some heavers in this footage from April. Great viewing!

hey Stu do our souls all a big favour and post some vintage footage of Gerry doing his thing, has anyone ever surfed Pipe better?

goofyfoot Tuesday, 5 May 2020 at 08:41 pm new

Yeah i reckon quite a few, JJF, Jamie O, Irons Bros, Anthony Walsh, Koa Rothman
To be fair I've seen way more footage of them than Gerry though

@2:57 that a beach shot of the A frame really stands out. Nearly makes it look inviting and friendly.

stunet Tuesday, 5 May 2020 at 05:20 pm new

Great to watch and also a reminder I've have no desire to surf pipe (nor the skills). Seems manic out there.

Great to see the old video too. I know every swell is different but the guys in the recent footage seem to get deeper than the old vid. Is that due to progression in surfing or board design?

I randomly watched that wave of Briley's from the Lost video again the other day. Still the heaviest wave I've ever seen at Pipe.
Good to see Jordy out there putting in his time.

Saw the same clip on another site but included Koa smith carrying on about himself and what he was having for lunch and being the full seppo wanker which ruined it pretty much, dont understand why surfers decided they needed to talk during a surf videos, the whole vlog flog is beyond me. Commented accordingly and was moderated away I guess CW is the Aussie version of surfline
Crowded but pumping late season pipeline , pretty nuts, even a few old boys still getting waves off the pack, Tamayo packed a nice one early in .

4 min mark, early entry, wondering whether to go left or right, big pipe barrel then through the doggy door. Fuckin crazy

How many times a day does Mason go surfing?

evosurfer Friday, 8 May 2020 at 09:54 am new

In those days it was heavy just being on the beach at pipe.
These days its a pleasure to be there even the heavy hitters
are friendly and the vibe is really cool. You just have to be
respectable. Surfing paradise.
