Watch: Saturday at Rainbow Bay

With the swell building and rain clouds gathering, Craig Halstead shot Rainbow Bay just as it started to purr. At present it's more a sand spit than a bay, as like all north coast points Rainbow has immense sand build up, and this created driving barrels from Snapper to the beginning of Greenmount where the waves slowed and bent around the end of the spit.

By all reports it got better in the afternoon - much, much better - but nevertheless this is a good sampler from a special day.

mikem197 Tuesday, 28 Jul 2020 at 12:44 pm new

20ish
The arvo was nuts, can't wait to see some footage

Stok Tuesday, 28 Jul 2020 at 04:54 pm new

20ish...sigh.

Insert standard grumbling about why do I live in Victoria.

Nick Bone Tuesday, 28 Jul 2020 at 07:33 pm new

Insert standard remark about all the full length steamer wearers being pansies hehe. But seriously. 20 is boardies and vest

Stok Tuesday, 28 Jul 2020 at 08:33 pm new

Bathwater NB, Bathwater.

Essentially the best we can hope for down here, is the coldest they get!!!

lostdoggy Tuesday, 28 Jul 2020 at 08:38 pm new

Boardies and vest by day, 2/2 steamer early and late.
The water is not the problem.

Ape Anonymous Tuesday, 28 Jul 2020 at 12:31 pm new

69 degrees.
Where's the footage from later on in the day?

Was that Parko on the last one?

stunet Tuesday, 28 Jul 2020 at 01:10 pm new

Yep. Great wave.

kang Tuesday, 28 Jul 2020 at 02:18 pm new

I watch these vids and dream of a long clean drainer. But in reality the session would be a frustrating lack of waves filled with drop-ins and feathered lips from people paddling for waves

radiationrules Tuesday, 28 Jul 2020 at 05:15 pm new

go the dickhead drop-in at 2:16

J.seas Saturday, 1 Aug 2020 at 09:30 pm new

lot off Dick draggers out there in general

Yeh, nah. I'm serious not really that interested. If 20 or so were out, sure......but an astronomical amount of crew, small barrels and with soo much snaking and shoulder hopping/snowballing going on, Meh.

Even bloody Parko at the end, with his amazing tube threading capabilities almost didn't make it past that man-made section.

I actually really prefer big open walls to carve, that on rail and feeling, that knife-edge gouging sensation....... but maybe that's because I'm from down here.

Anyhow, carry-on.

Nick Bone Tuesday, 28 Jul 2020 at 07:35 pm new

20 is surely low balling it. 50 would still be sweet no? 60 plus at the heads waiting for set waves. Now thats a no

Also factor in a sweep if there was one at say 4 knots. Puts a slightly different aspect on it.

ringmaster Tuesday, 28 Jul 2020 at 09:19 pm new

Gimme a 4/3 and hood any day if it means considerably less peeps in the water when it's good.
