"It's been such a tough time in the world and the Mentawais have not been immune. Indonesia and the Mentawais closed off its borders in late March and just recently opened up domestic travel for anyone currently within Indonesia.
"Kandui Resort has made a considerable effort to keep our local staff employed and, like everyone, we're looking forward to seeing the international border open soon. The one bright, shining light during this time has been the surf and the lack of surfers.
"We've started a YouTube series 'The Last Man in the Mentawais' with the hope that this series pumps everyone up to return to Indonesia and visit your favorite island, resort, or charter boat. The Mentawais has been crushed economically and everyone is looking forward to your return.
"Episode 1 will focus on the Kandui Left swell of the year that recently blazed through the archipelago. Anthony Fillingim was visiting us in late March and shortly after he arrived to the island, the world started folding in. With no information available when anyone would be able to leave the Mentawais, he buckled in for the long run and the results were spectacular.
"We hope you enjoy the series and it pumps you up to return. The Mentawais needs your help now more than ever."

That last wave was pretty close to the smaller waves on "THE" cloudbreak swell. That was seriously heavy. He has that place absolutely dialled. That was magic to watch.

The plus is that you could be as selective as you wanted and not feel compelled to go on the 'semi makeable' ones.
The neg would be that at some stage you're gunna get yourself into a really heavy situation which could finish your trip in a heartbeat but you HAVE to stay out cause no one's there, right???

That's ridiculous. That's what you get with world class waves, surfer and film-maker coming together.
We go there every year but never seen it break properly, and never surfed it. I doubt I could handle the hidings.
I've surfed a similar wave close by a bit over double overhead in a 22-sec 6ft swell and it was just on the fun side of really serious, so I can't imagine the thrashings you get at this size at Kandui, especially on that end section. A mate who's a very good surfer pulled into one during one unreal surf in 2014 (one wave of his made the wave of the day on this venerable site) and went over the falls - he reckoned it was like a block of concrete on his head and there was no water beneath him......
Ray and Justis have around 40 staff at Kandui Resort, and I understand they have tried to keep on as many have families etc, so props to them. I just hope the corona shitshow gets sorted out soon for their sake....and cos we're on the 2021 roster...

1. A ratio of 3 Camera Guys to 1 Surfer (Worse Than Padnag Padang when its on) or
2. IF you got barrelled off your scone for minutes and many times and no one saw it..
Fork it I'd live with the terror and the pain just to be alone.
