From reeling sandbars, to 20ft barrels, and onwards to offshore, barrelling beachies, Leonardo Fioravanti puts forward a good argument for hitting the highway during times of swell.

It blows me away how easy these guys can travel from country to country in the midst of a pandemic.

chook Monday, 16 Nov 2020 at 04:03 pm new

one thing i that isn't a surprise is that this ease of travel is in countries with 10,000+ new covid cases a day.

some solid poundings with those bigger waves.

It'll be interesting to see how things pan out for him in Hawaii RE the pandemic. Personally I wouldn't want to be there at the moment.

Trentslatterphoto Monday, 16 Nov 2020 at 04:14 pm new

where was the 20ft barrel section ?

stunet Tuesday, 17 Nov 2020 at 07:26 am new

"25ft foot" barrels, if you believe Leo's video title, Trent.

Figured I'd better round it down.

matt.evans Wednesday, 18 Nov 2020 at 08:56 am new

I blame the crappy clickbait culture of youtube. Leo seems like a decent bloke.
Those were some heavy fckn waves. Much respect (and much jealousy for the Mundaka section)

There was a woman named Eliphah who had a brother called Ant. Ant had a son who liked to surf but Ant and his wife had never named him until one day the Occassion seemed right. They were all having lunch one day with the extended family, Ant and his beautiful wife and their unnamed son and Ant’s sister Elipha was there, and of course Eliphah was also their unnamed son’s aunt. They were all chatting about how the boy was a great surfer and showed courage in the waves. But just as they were talking the boy put his hand out to grab a shrimp off the barbie, and his Aunt Elipha called out and growled and told him to wait his turn. He quickly pulled back his hand and obeyed her. Somebody said “oh jeeze he charges big waves but he’s scared of his Aunty” and then his father said “its true, I will name him Fear-of-Aunty”. They said “it doesn’t sound French enough”, so he said “ok Fioravanti” and they all agreed, but when they say it they always know it really means “fear of Aunty”!!

That was a slow burner that one. The pay-off was worth it.

ojackojacko Monday, 16 Nov 2020 at 05:54 pm new

no it wasn't

Spuddups Monday, 16 Nov 2020 at 06:18 pm new

From the data set available to us we can conclude that 50% of people think that joke is funny and 50% think it isn't. It's a small sample at the moment, but I'm looking forward to gathering more data on the subject. These are exciting times we live in.

Awww, common guys, I’m fishing...gimme another one like it. Haha, even in my own home I get around a 50/50 strike rate with those. My daughters just about throw their food at me at the table!!!

zenagain Tuesday, 17 Nov 2020 at 01:39 am new

Smart daughters.

Current Affair Tuesday, 17 Nov 2020 at 12:04 pm new

I'm giving it a like and I know what a tough audience teenage daughters are.

Westofthelake Monday, 16 Nov 2020 at 08:59 pm new

zenagain Monday, 16 Nov 2020 at 09:43 pm new

Put me down for a wry smile and an eye roll.

Spuddups Tuesday, 17 Nov 2020 at 05:00 am new

Well it looks like we're still at 50/50. This is a bit like the US election. It's on a knife edge. Could be some legal challenges in the works I fear.

Craig Tuesday, 17 Nov 2020 at 07:19 am new

I like it, just tipped the scale.

Spuddups Wednesday, 18 Nov 2020 at 06:34 pm new

The people have spoken.

chook Monday, 16 Nov 2020 at 04:38 pm new

think the 20ft barrel claims might be using mainland american sizing.

Spuddups Monday, 16 Nov 2020 at 06:20 pm new

I think we can all agree that it was a big wave though.

memlasurf Monday, 16 Nov 2020 at 06:22 pm new

It was bloody big who cares it was a hoot watching him go for it and I reckon he would know barrel size way more than any of us, let's face it the guy is a gun and I loved the clip. Old school Aussie surf trip in Europe, what more could you want. Those big beasties looked like a really raw Victorian swell - bumpy, wild and cold

Westofthelake Monday, 16 Nov 2020 at 09:05 pm new

That big right near the end I was hoping he would magically appear out of the foam was awesome. The background sunset scene on the shore with him sharing the stoke was gold.

Ray Shirlaw Tuesday, 17 Nov 2020 at 05:31 am new

Getting his VonFroff on, yeeeeeeeww!

mredhill Tuesday, 17 Nov 2020 at 05:09 pm new

"...and now I'm going to pack my 18 boards..." As you do.

Jamyardy Tuesday, 17 Nov 2020 at 09:18 pm new

Must be a bit of "interference" before the swell gets to that fun looking right in the last segment. 8.4m @ 19 seconds swell. Maybe the buoy is way out to sea, or there is a significant continental shelf, or its protected in a bay where the waves have to bend in. Uninterrupted 6m swells @ 19s seconds at Jaws (even margs) are significantly bigger. Good effort for Leo pulling into that last one though.
