Watch: Late Dust Bowls

Craig Brokensha (Craig)

As cruel as it is posting endless barreling waves from a far away land, this collation of footage from late September featuring Jonathan Gubbins getting barrelled off his nut (unique style and all) is more than worth a watch.

Sit back, grab a drink and drift away.

Likes a barrel eh? Not sure why he bothers with a tail pad.

zenagain Thursday, 23 Sep 2021 at 09:40 pm new

That was some sick tuberiding.

The shots from the water get my vote.

Remigogo Thursday, 23 Sep 2021 at 09:54 pm new

All round rythem of this little instalment is top stuff. Well done.

I am sooo jealous.

Kellya Thursday, 23 Sep 2021 at 10:04 pm new

Yeah that was filth. Top marks all ‘round.

andy-mac Friday, 24 Sep 2021 at 06:58 am new

Drone shot makes it look pretty uncrowded for that spot. Lucky buggers!!!

Cacadajy Friday, 24 Sep 2021 at 08:04 am new

That was very cool.

Wonder how the shapers out there interpret Mr Gubbins positioning on his board and his use of the rail and volume and even fins. Unique but effective.

D-Rex Friday, 24 Sep 2021 at 09:40 am new

With so much forward weight I am amazed the tail doesn't give way - works for JG tho!

simba Friday, 24 Sep 2021 at 10:51 am new

probably thicker up front to allow for his weight maybe bigger fins...funny how he gets up straight to the nose no shuffling forward.......can he do turns ?

mrkook Friday, 24 Sep 2021 at 11:31 am new

I reckon he loves the glide and just enjoying the wave. I'm increasingly just trimming and letting the wave dictate the flow. I'm probably just an ageing kook though :)

ringmaster Friday, 24 Sep 2021 at 11:45 am new

Johnny Gubbins would be fucked if he lived on the Surfcoast.

Nice clip.

Craig Friday, 24 Sep 2021 at 11:45 am new

Haha.

dawnperiscope Friday, 24 Sep 2021 at 03:49 pm new

Man, he’s tapped in to that reef

Bungan33 Friday, 24 Sep 2021 at 03:50 pm new

That reef is a freaking wonder of the natural world. So glad I got to surf it before it exploded. It was heartbreaking to surf it with just a few guys - then come back a few years later and it be so crowded you literally knocked into others boards when you spun to catch a wave. Was simply horrible. People snaking, yelling, glaring. I shudder to think what it will be like when the borders open.
(BTW - who ARE all these tourists still roaming around Indo??? Seems like they come from a different planet than planet Vicco...)

indo-dreaming Friday, 24 Sep 2021 at 04:17 pm new

His feet positioning is crazy, im sure id spin and slide out trying that, but he has it totally wired like he is ridding a magic carpet does it with style too.

Queef Jerky Friday, 24 Sep 2021 at 04:26 pm new

Booged this wave once, around '18 offseason. Got it nice enough size for me and just a (Dutch?) dude on a gun board. Scared the crap outta me, rode all the way back home with an ice pack on my knee. Patella.

Joeseph Friday, 24 Sep 2021 at 06:28 pm new

Style is unique but feels like he must be holding a lot of tension to keep the rail and fin engaged, like if he de-weights for a second it'll slide out. Kinda makes me feel tense watching it, doesn't feel like a relaxed or effortless style...

freesurfer1977 Friday, 24 Sep 2021 at 07:09 pm new

May as well round off the nose and hang five the whole time :) Nahh cool style n sic Pitts. Definitely rather be there then in this mad ass country going nuts.

Bungan asks "Who ARE these tourists still roaming around Indo ? " Fair call ,50 at the point recently. At the risk of being a wanker ,I was elsewhere. With a handful.Been surfing with blokes from Florida,California,Hawaii and assorted Euro kooks. And Aussie ex-pats. The Yanks are free ,come and go.Unfortunately my beautiful Australia is a POLICE STATE. Now ,that is what governments do ,they can't help themselves. They are ALL xunts. As is their propaganda arm the MSM but the truly tragic thing about this is that there's many Australians on board with this tyranny. All over a glorified flu.

endru Sunday, 26 Sep 2021 at 09:54 pm new

I disagree with everything you write about COVID etc, but I too am completely sick and totally tired of lockdown, restrictions, and so bloody forth. We all are. Whatever sort of flu it is, do us all a favour and get your self vaccinated.

Haha, funny comment as US has death sentence for people who think they can do whatever they think they are free to do. Free to commit murder? Haha that’s a newy!! Freedom has never been absolute in culture or law. Like surfing, it’s a balancing act.

memlasurf Sunday, 26 Sep 2021 at 04:27 pm new

I think if you asked a doctor of a nurse who are doing it hard in the COVID wards and exhausted from dealing with the sickness, even from deniers like you, they would see they would be incredibly frustrated. Sometimes we need to do things we don't like for the good of the general community. This is that time and quoting TJ, who took away the freedom of hundreds of Black slaves under his watch, is a strange one indeed.

Bungan33 Sunday, 26 Sep 2021 at 10:34 pm new

Yep....spot on. Heard it said best today. All this yelling and screaming about "personal liberty" but rioting libertarians misunderstanding that liberty is ONLY possible when balanced with civic duty. You cant have extremes of one or the other. So I say we just need to suck it up, get vaccinated and play our part. "Only the flu..." is complete BS. A relative got it in Japan before it hit the world and with one lung functioning now, he cant duck dive without getting the sensation he is drowning.....Ill pass on that thanks!

drodders Saturday, 25 Sep 2021 at 08:14 am new

Is he a longboarder? Great waves.

san Guine Saturday, 25 Sep 2021 at 10:52 am new

Amazing style...maybe he has a tail pad so he knows where not to put his back foot?

goofyfoot Saturday, 25 Sep 2021 at 01:57 pm new

I’ve said it before, I just don’t dig this guys style. It’s a bit too much for me.
And yep I’m extremely jealous that he’s scoring caverns like that and I can’t even drive more than 5kms from home to look for waves.
I’d sell my grannies kidney to be looking out of one of those blue delights

PabloM Saturday, 25 Sep 2021 at 10:18 pm new

Grower! Amazing style Jono

indo-dreaming Sunday, 26 Sep 2021 at 09:00 am new

It would be interesting to have an interview with this guy and ask him about his technique and see his board and fin set up.

nasigoreng Sunday, 26 Sep 2021 at 10:08 am new

It is cruel but fucken sick too. That tail pad is redundant.

simba Sunday, 26 Sep 2021 at 10:36 am new

should put the tail pad up near the nose

Liplaunched Sunday, 26 Sep 2021 at 12:57 pm new

lead inserts in the tailpad

The MIDdleman. Sunday, 26 Sep 2021 at 01:30 pm new

Ive never been anywhere near a foam ball of the size has dealing with but I could imagine it may help when super deep.

That super exposed outer back rail would accept the energy and project him foward somewhat.

Still a few of those shots defy my understanding of how a board usually works.....like he must have a 2ft fin in for it to make any sense.

dean maddison Monday, 27 Sep 2021 at 06:39 pm new

Cant comment on his style , never seen him do a turn. Gets good barrels in 3 to 6 foot perfect reefs like most guys . Should try that style in some serious waves before we start gushing too much.

PabloM Monday, 27 Sep 2021 at 11:50 pm new

Hahhaha you can start gushing Dean

batfink Saturday, 16 Oct 2021 at 08:30 am new

At this rate I’d have to be surfing another 90 years to get the tube time he’s managed in that one clip.

Unusual style no doubt. Seems to work.
