Watch: Peahi Barrels During Shoulder Season

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Reels

With the calendar having only just flipped into November, almost a whole month from the beginning of the northern hemi winter, we're still in what travel agents call 'shoulder season'.

Which makes yesterday's session at Peahi even more remarkable. While it wasn't huge - relatively speaking of course - it was respectably big. Big enough for clean up sets and chicken skin barrels.

Speaking of, while the season appeared to kick off much how the last one left off - Albee Layer picking off the insiders, Kai Lenny all over everything - the barrel count ratcheted up a notch. A sign of things to come?

Also, three drop ins on Kai Lenny..?

Has to be.

Nick Bone Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 12:27 pm new

Wtf

stunet Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 10:33 am new

Few extra waves in here:

radiationrules Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 10:40 am new

Kai Lenny was (by memory) given a wild card to surf Peahi in 2015 contest - now look at him - maybe too dominant - hence the drop-ins?

Nice to see Alby Layer back in the game / own's the inside ledge.

pittsy Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 10:51 am new

haven't watched it yet but imagine how shit you would feel if you dropped in and the bloke you faded ended up getting mowed down/injured/killed? Drop in on anything but tiny beachy seems crazy to me, so much that could go wrong

Roker Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 11:11 am new

Kai Lenny getting foiled like that seems totally zucked up to me.

boxright Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 11:16 am new

"Also, three drop ins on Kai Lenny..?"

It wouldn't happen in the metaverse.

ringmaster Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 12:02 pm new

Seemed even more majestic with those classic Floyd tunes as background.

Craig Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 01:02 pm new

Agree, and Kemper's barrel and line, insane!

Supafreak Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 07:41 pm new

One of my all time favourite albums . I watched a show on ABC that would go into the making of certain classic albums and this one featured . The female vocalist who performs on this was paid $500 ( pounds ? ) and did it first take , she actually zoned right out while doing it and apologised to the band and said she’d do it again, they were blown away and said no no that will be fine thanks .

ringmaster Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 08:01 pm new

Dark Side Of The Moon. One of biggest selling albums ever!

Pretty sure that female vocalist was offered a choice of album royalties OR a set fee.

Poor woman would have made 7 figures if she'd zigged instead of zagged!

batfink Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 03:28 pm new

Hadn’t listened to it in ages. Was going to comment ‘does anyone know the music - transcendent’ just for a joke.

It was on SBS when I saw it, don’t think it made it to ABC, and the show was called ‘Classic albums’, if I recall correctly. This was first up, then they did Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Rumours’, and I thought this is the best music series I’ve ever seen. They may have done Elton John’s ‘Goodby Yellow Brick Road’ too. Then they did some really shit ones which weren’t classics here at all, including that heavy metal band with the one armed drummer, the name of which I refuse to recall.

Those first two are just awesome shows, the FM Rumours show went into all the shite going down between the band while they wrote the album.

Roker Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 09:00 pm new

Impressive footy, incredible surfing and wonderful, beautiful music - which is completely at odds with the footage. ‘Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day’? Not this crew! ‘Time’, especially, screams England to me, a melancholy portrait of winding down the clock in, say, a north eastern housing estate where the days are cold and short and going to school at the local comprehensive will quickly snuff out any fantasies like ‘thought I’d something more to say.’ Completely ill suited to this clip, musically, lyrically and in tone, I reckon. Like putting HP sauce on your pineapple.

batfink Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 03:30 pm new

True Roker, but I could watch anything with that music behind it and come out feeling enhanced by it. Who knows, maybe hp sauce on pineapple is worth investigating, there’s an entire culinary genre of sweet and sour.

surfstarved Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 03:30 pm new

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you RM. I fucken love Pink Floyd, but I didn't think it suited this footage at all.

Echoes vs. George Greenough was and still is one of the most mind-blowing surfing sequences ever shot, but I just wasn't feeling it this time.

sangsta Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 12:03 pm new

And I thought what a beautiful set up with only paddle ins ruling. Until Kai Lenny and his "I love you Mark Zuckerberg" pink candle toe-in happened. Poor form on that and the drop ins. Was the love candle a safety device or a "look at me" symbol?

jmarc Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 01:22 pm new

Gender reveal of his baby girl. Why not?

Good chance KL consistently paddles inside of everyone hence the fading.....

Optimist Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 01:46 pm new

Great clip and so nice to see all the paddling in….perhaps the pigs of Kirra can go buy themselves a gun and lose the skis finally and share like the good old days.

Robwilliams Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 01:49 pm new

paddlers getting more and more relaxed as confidence grows and experience builds. Going to be a interesting season to watch. And the crowds getting thicker too.

bluediamond Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 04:56 pm new

Seems like the past few years November has seen some of the biggest swells of the season over there from memory.

t-diddy Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 05:00 pm new

unreal how deep they're taking off

san Guine Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 07:09 pm new

Excellent. Big wave surfing has become far more technical and nuanced. Billy Kempers' barrel exhibit A

goofyfoot Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 08:23 pm new

Watching that from the channel would be an incredible experience. The guys and gals who surf that joint are amazing.

lostdoggy Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 09:27 pm new

Kai Lenny, despite his clear talent, look at me attitude, tow in waves, flares, switch foot, was still upstaged by the barrels of Billy, Albee, and Francisco Portella. So good.

I loved that backhand by Francisco, incredible.

crg Thursday, 4 Nov 2021 at 10:16 pm new

Pretty sure I heard Jamie Mitcho’s wipeout ended with a two wave hold down

Island Bay Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 07:36 am new

More Albee - less Kai L, please.

Was stoked to see Albee Layer get the final wave/word.

tango Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 07:54 am new

They're all crazy just being out there.

The crowd and the drop-ins are starting to look a bit like the Superbank, though.

udo Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 09:16 am new

There going to have to cap the numbers out there way to many out for safety and wrong waves will be taken out of frustration and sort that dangerous dropping in shit out asap

Hall of Lame Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 09:26 am new

They may have to cap it because there will be some sort of cosmic eruption of ego in the water. (Crazy good surfers though.)

simsurf Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 09:22 am new

Must have been zuckerberg going left

udo Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 09:28 am new

Result of getting frustrated - Big Ben survived but the Gun did not..

Supafreak Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 01:22 pm new

WOW thanks for that Craig, I’ve watched that about 20 times , so much going on with different punters, that one guy surfaced just in time to see a massive wall of white water about to flog him again .

lostdoggy Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 02:58 pm new

What brand legrope?
Broke his femur but the leggy survived. Wow

Craig Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 03:01 pm new

Jeez, missed that, fark!

joesydney Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 11:09 pm new

Twisting injury - spiral fracture. Leggies will twist and stretch better than your femur.

batfink Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 03:38 pm new

Classic ocean trick that one - normally after a long lull when you venture inside a bit - just get through the first one but it rocks you back for the second to clean you up.

Happens to me all the time - on 3’ days when a rogue 4’ comes through. :-)

Roker Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 06:47 pm new

Fark indeed! I think I'm guilty of seeing the skis, and the vests, how easy they can make it look, and kinda thinking, meh, what could really go wrong? Then I see that, and definitively conclude that I have no idea.

Yippee Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 10:57 am new

I wonder if Kai's purple smoke flare thingo might be the next addition to the inflatable vest?
Pull the tag, vest inflates, smoke &/or dye deploys so your ski buddy can find you more easily.

Robwilliams Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 02:32 pm new

Rolled through and swallowed them all. Hectic how many boards and bodies inside. Heavy

memlasurf Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 04:05 pm new

The big wave paddle thing has really come on in the last 10 years. From just getting to the bottom to that Albee take off turn and barrel, amazing stuff. Way too many people out there and Stu didn't you have a crack a few years ago I remember seeing you all buffed up and a big board how was it?

Balbero Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 07:27 pm new

Hey Stu Neetle,
You are becoming very close to the " click bait" BS that we all on your website are hopefully trying to get away from. The surfing is great, but suggesting that waves of this calibre in November by travel agents 'shoulder season' and 'chicken skin barrels' is embarrassing mate to someone who lives there, let alone someone that's been going to , and tracking season's in The Hawaiian Islands for 40 years. Please GET A GRIP. Just keep providing the good content you desire without the 'thinking you have to sell it to us' You may not know the swell history of this region, that only come's with time , please know that you are providing us, (Swellnet user's) with gold just with the webcam's. All the other shit is just a bonus.

joesydney Friday, 5 Nov 2021 at 10:52 pm new

Do you think you might be taking yourself a little too seriously……?

stunet Saturday, 6 Nov 2021 at 06:20 am new

Ha ha ha...universal applause for Billy Kemper's barrel but you remain nonplussed?

You're too cool fro me, Balbero.

Well you sure fookin did !

udo Saturday, 6 Nov 2021 at 07:38 pm new

Some good words from Water Safety

stunet Monday, 8 Nov 2021 at 07:31 am new

Understand he wants to be appreciated....but, what he's proposing would see more skis in the channel and more skis diving into the impact zone should a clean up set come through, which increases the chance of collision with an emerging surfer.

goofyfoot Monday, 8 Nov 2021 at 08:52 am new

What’s the answer then Stu?

stunet Monday, 8 Nov 2021 at 09:00 am new

Not sure how it would sit within an American framework, but the water patrol at Nazare is the gold standard. All skis have central communication and listen to the command, so they operate as a unit, as opposed to Jaws where it's just a free for all.

Problems would be Americans working within a hierarchical system, and because it's independent it would have to be funded, In Naz, it's funded by the town. Not sure if a council on Maui would be so keen.

goofyfoot Monday, 8 Nov 2021 at 08:05 pm new

Interesting re Nazare, so is there someone on the cliff or something directing the ski's?

stunet Tuesday, 9 Nov 2021 at 07:44 am new

Yeah, sitting up on the headland to take in the view of the whole lineup. They speak into an open channel on headsets that everyone has to wear and his/her word is final.
