Watch: Pumping Kirra - January 3rd

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth provided the goods yesterday with the swell ramping up late Sunday ahead of a peak Monday morning. It wasn't until the tide filled in and the swell settled that Kirra really turned it on but Craig Halstead (surfonmars) caught all the action featuring Mick Fanning, Nathan Hedge, Mikey Wright, Morgan Cibilic and Shaun Harrington among others.

Great footage. Love to know how many of these guys had ski assist.

Yes only showed one take off which for me in big waves is the most impressive part

Hey boys, i was there watching for a fair chunk of the 6-8ft+ swell and the crew getting the best barrels were the ones paddling into them. The skis couldn't get too close to the crowd so yeah, paddle in won.

Crazy good vid

Craig Tuesday, 4 Jan 2022 at 12:23 pm new

How's the guy pig dogging at 3:00 then comes out with his back foot off the board. Crazy!

t-diddy Tuesday, 4 Jan 2022 at 05:49 pm new

so good!

goofyfoot Tuesday, 4 Jan 2022 at 12:44 pm new

That guy who takes off at 3:10 was flying! Unreal

greg-n.williams Tuesday, 4 Jan 2022 at 01:46 pm new

lucky bastards! One day of solid swell down here(6ft+) so far with only one reef turning on with a holiday crowd to make it really enjoyable. Wrong state looking at the vids from QLD.

Diamonds in the rough. Was hard work and plenty of wash throughs

tango Tuesday, 4 Jan 2022 at 09:36 pm new

Regardless, having the summer we are having down here in Vic, there's a few crew who'd love a few 6ft wash-thrus with those kinda gems for the taking....and in boardies.

hamishbro Friday, 7 Jan 2022 at 05:59 am new

Hardy ‘for the taking’. It’s a bloody hard wave. Probably the most difficult in Australia all things considered… crowds, sweep, take off, fickleness of the good waves and demoralising consequences of taking off on the wrong one. Then there’s riding it.

tango Friday, 7 Jan 2022 at 01:28 pm new

As I said, gems for the taking. In boardies. The current Vic summer leaves a takeoff on a 6ft closeout well behind in the demoralising stakes.

hamishbro Friday, 7 Jan 2022 at 09:25 pm new

Fair enough! Don’t worry, things will soon turn around for Vicco.

At a place like Kirra..?.... So it well be earned for those deserving reward for long term effort.

love seeing a random score a bomb

Agreed, it’s fairly special actually. To snag one of the pack and to also have the chops and skill to get in is really something.

holy *&%

Seeing a few clips of big Wade Carmichael out at Kirra not looking so big?
Has he gone into diet mode or off the beers after getting knocked off the tour?

rj-davey Thursday, 6 Jan 2022 at 01:14 am new

So good. Better vid too I reckon.

lostdoggy Thursday, 6 Jan 2022 at 07:05 am new

Who's the guy on his backhand, drops in at 2.19, avoids kook bailing board then comes out behind a drop in and all with no hands?
Very impressive.

Yeah that sick

No mal half a quiver Thursday, 6 Jan 2022 at 08:14 am new

Quiet frustrating 1 form of surfing adaptation is rounding up a drop in. Unnecessary bottom turns around foam balls created by a shoulder hopper intentionally wrecking waves What is with that?

Tim Bonython Thursday, 6 Jan 2022 at 09:06 am new

Darn! Look so fun. I would have liked to been out there that day! Good stuff Craig..

Craig Halstead Thursday, 6 Jan 2022 at 04:46 pm new
