Watch: Kirra // The First Swell of Summer

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Reels

The general rule for waves on the Goldy is that spring lasts till Christmas when the northerlies give way, the trade belt fires up, and a new surf season begins.

Of course, the rules go out the window during La Nina years, and even though the pattern is breaking down, it's still got a hold over the sub-tropics - as evidenced by the deepening low offshore from Byron and the swell that developed from it.

This morning, just two days deep into summer, and Kirra was reeling under leaden skies and light wind.

Craig Halstead sat on the headland and took it in. Don't forget to give the big fella a subscribe!

The general rule for the Goldy is that when it gets over 4ft, there'll be at least 6 jet skis in the line up.

Of course, the rules go out the window when this happens.

This morning, just two days deep into summer, things were no different.

In all seriousness, far out, surely surfers from up that way must be a bit fearful of the exiting of La Nina. It continues to pump beyond belief, but the party can't last forever right!?

Fearful?

What do you mean Stok?

goofyfoot Friday, 2 Dec 2022 at 04:55 pm new

I think he means the stellar run ending

Stok Friday, 2 Dec 2022 at 05:13 pm new

Yeah, run's ending. Never easy to break into new heights, then drop back down to where you were. Wouldn't be surprised if some people lose their keeness over the coming years.

Am I being too dramatic?

t-diddy Friday, 2 Dec 2022 at 06:24 pm new

yea what's with that?

burleigh Friday, 2 Dec 2022 at 04:17 pm new

I’m the first to hate on skis but this morning at Kirra they were not too bad.
Step offs were happening WAY down towards Bilinga

lostdoggy Friday, 2 Dec 2022 at 04:42 pm new

If there wasn’t an epic bank up that way like today they would have been hassling the regular lineup as per normal.

I did more paddling than catching waves , 5 in 3 hours , sleep well tonight.

I recall about 2 yrs back huge outcry with jet skis taking over breaks
Was it Handley who almost killed someone
Talk that water police would patrol better and issue fines
Was that ever followed through with
Or are the authorities best mates with the culprits
Imagine when there is a serious injury

Day 2, worth a watch.

If you can make sense of what happened at 1:20 then please explain.

StormyAndBo Monday, 5 Dec 2022 at 03:24 pm new

I'm assuming a leggie tangle, but Joel Fitz ended up getting the fins from the snapped board, for an added plot twist....

Craig Tuesday, 6 Dec 2022 at 08:06 am new

Wow.

Start of the third video, super close to a surfer who ended up ditching his board and bailing. Not cool!
