Watch: Dylan Longbottom Hits Rock Bottom

Filmed by Tim Bonython, this clip shows Dylan Longbottom's last wave of a strike mission earlier this month.

The upshot - though Dylan didn't know it at the time - was a collapsed lung and four broken ribs.

From Tim:

"For his first wave, Dylan chose a wave that became a mutant beast. A fifteen-footer that stepped out where he lost his balance and went top to bottom inside the lip on one of the heaviest wipeouts ever. He was driven to the bottom smashing his chest and up seeing stars. His partner Jerome Sahyoun drove him to the beach where he called it day.

"Later Dylan indicated he was OK although was in a lot of pain. The day went on even following up the next day to witness his daughter Summa Longbottom getting some amazing bombs. That following afternoon we headed back to Adelaide to get the 6.30 am back to Sydney.

"Once back home he saw a doctor and got told to go straight to hospital where he was diagnosed with four heavily broken ribs, a punctured lung, with a lot blood of that was drained out overnight. That flight could have killed him.

"As we speak he’s in getting surgery as those ribs simply snapped. He told me he’ll be OK which is good. So we all wish him the best with a speedy recovery."

Oh boy... I don't know what it was but something didn't seem right about his footing. I hope he has a speedy recovery and can keep charging ptl.

Ray Shirlaw Wednesday, 14 Jun 2023 at 09:16 pm new

Too many steps...&no straps? Ouch

Reform Thursday, 15 Jun 2023 at 10:15 am new

Well observed Nobes, I thought so too, no straps and wearing booties that afford a no feel situation for the foot in the wax, maybe if he had straps would've got him a bit further along and out of the jaws of that gnarly looking beast.

Troppo Wednesday, 14 Jun 2023 at 01:59 pm new

Here's to a speedy recovery Dylan!
He has a higher pain tolerance than me, that's for sure!!

nolocal Wednesday, 14 Jun 2023 at 02:49 pm new

so my board isn't ready yet?

heal up quick Dyl

frog Wednesday, 14 Jun 2023 at 03:23 pm new

Phewwww, close to bare rock. I am surprised it does not happen much more often.

Rib pain can be delayed by a day or two, I believe, fooling people as to how serious the injury is.

t-diddy Wednesday, 14 Jun 2023 at 03:45 pm new

maybe needed a bit more speed?

burleigh Wednesday, 14 Jun 2023 at 03:48 pm new

Now i know that wave was 100% not paddle-able but i fucking hate these clips with guys towing through a crowd of paddle surfers. It's highly illegal and dangerous to everyone in the lineup.

In saying that, very heavy wipeout and i hope he makes a full recovery.

I'm sure if he sat in the positioning of all others rather than scoop to the inside of them by the way of petrol he woulda made it

Hefty wipeout

bocirl Friday, 16 Jun 2023 at 07:47 am new

It's a dick move, selfish and entitled.

memlasurf Thursday, 22 Jun 2023 at 12:25 pm new

100% paddle-able - not by me you must be near pro level to take that on.

wallpaper Wednesday, 14 Jun 2023 at 04:12 pm new

The other thing is jetskis put them in places they really shouldn't be, especially on a dubious setup like that one. It all works mostly fine at at peahi or places like that that break predictably but very risky at a spot like this. He was never going to make that wave and it might be that he was lucky he to come off where he did. No laughing, sneezing or hiccups for a while.

zenagain Wednesday, 14 Jun 2023 at 04:35 pm new

Or fart jokes...

mr mick Wednesday, 14 Jun 2023 at 05:14 pm new

maybe even farts

Craig Wednesday, 14 Jun 2023 at 05:16 pm new

Sketchy, sketchy wave, there have been a lot of very serious and life changing injuries at this place. Dylan looked to have come out of it OK considering.

memlasurf Thursday, 22 Jun 2023 at 12:26 pm new

Craig is it mostly a gut slider wave?

Craig Thursday, 22 Jun 2023 at 12:29 pm new

For paddling yes. I've seen it much more manageable as well with the boogs making it looks super easy, just scooping in from the boils. Surfing it, especially paddling is sketchy as, and the injuries I've heard of have been from towing.

andy-mac Wednesday, 14 Jun 2023 at 05:34 pm new

Geez that was heavy. Hope for a Quick recovery, but man rib injuries suck.
All the best....

southernraw Wednesday, 14 Jun 2023 at 06:49 pm new

wow! That place pulls a crowd now.

tim is a looser, why does he have to mention the date and place.
biggest wanker in the surfing industry, have some morals idiot

maybe you could do a swap with Tim - you know some of your morals for some of his brains?

Im not knocking their pursuit and I don’t mean to speak anything horrible into existence and be so negative but when is enough enough?
One of these swell chasers is going to kill themselves soon. They seem to go so fuckin hard and constantly put themselves in such dangerous situations that something has to give eventually.

Nate Florence for example has been jet setting around everywhere from the Box, Luna’s, Teahupoo, bombing Puerto, Shippies, S.A. all back to back to back within about a month (after a broken back at the end of last year)

When do these guys get there fill and just chill and be happy with the incredible waves they have had or are they just on an endless quest for that insatiable fix and keep going until they seriously injure themselves. (Admittedly makes for good viewing)

Serious question…?

They are just human like all of us and seem to tempting fate repetitively all over the world.

Best of luck to you all but sometimes you gotta just gotta have a breather. Stay safe.

andy-mac Thursday, 15 Jun 2023 at 11:29 am new

Why? Don't they make their living by posting this stuff on social media?
I however agree with your statement.

Stok Thursday, 15 Jun 2023 at 12:18 pm new

To a lay person a 6ft wave which throws a tube would seem like dicing with death....guess it's the same for this. They wouldn't see it as risky as the non big wave crew would.

burleigh Thursday, 15 Jun 2023 at 12:20 pm new

nobody other than kids would consider a 6ft tube dicing with death.

Stok Thursday, 15 Jun 2023 at 07:17 pm new

Sorry - make that 8-10ft to translate to QLD scale

jedi old mate Thursday, 15 Jun 2023 at 11:52 pm new

Not sure what you are on about …everyone knows the waves never really get over 4ft in Queensland so i doubt you have ever encountered a 6ft wave. Maybe once when you were doing step offs..?

wallpaper Saturday, 17 Jun 2023 at 09:06 am new

Hate to break it to you burls, but 99.99% of the world's population have never been near a wave and can't even swim so even playing around near a flat body of water inattentively could be considered dicing with death. You really should get out more. There is so much more to life than surfing. I know young kids who surf better than you and understand that.

burleigh Saturday, 17 Jun 2023 at 10:15 am new

burleigh Monday, 19 Jun 2023 at 02:39 pm new

I've got a feeling you get on the beers around lunchtime. Every angry comment comes from you around mid afternoon. Why are you so bitter?

Trentslatterphoto Monday, 19 Jun 2023 at 02:53 pm new

You misconstrued my comment warchild. I was by no means angry, if anything you comment had me in tears.

memlasurf Thursday, 22 Jun 2023 at 12:31 pm new

At 63 I'm probably at the kid level and I want to keep living a long life. 6' barrels on your back hand in the Ment's was hairy for me and heavy when you bounce off a reef.

Made me think of wing suiters.
Go for a relaxing fly along a mountainside instead?

Bnkref Friday, 16 Jun 2023 at 12:52 pm new

A Canadian mate of mine was a very experienced wing suiter and had an accident and died doing it. He was well aware of the risks and accepted it. Maybe the slab / big wave crew are wired the same way?

warddy Friday, 16 Jun 2023 at 06:08 pm new

Wing suiters are the ultimate hard core…..
At least they are only putting themselves at risk ….
Petrol heads plowing through a crew of surfers sucks big time ….
Yes I know it’s all about the money …
This is the modern world….

gunther Saturday, 17 Jun 2023 at 05:04 am new

Glad he survived...but also glad he won't be towing into 6ft sand bottomed rivermouths for a while...

groundswell85 Saturday, 17 Jun 2023 at 11:21 am new

There’s been a marked uptick in towing again. Especially when crew are paddling. It’s kind of lame, considering what’s being paddled these days. Didn’t we go through this in the early 00’s?
Would much rather see someone paddle a 10fter than someone tow a 12fter personally. The fact no one paddling looked at that wave tells you everything you need to know. Clearly sketchy when sitting on the ledge, and not 200m out from it. Whoever was driving got their line wrong. Shouldn’t be needing to pump after letting go of a rope. Had no chance of getting further down the line. And as for Tim he’s fast becoming at lot people’s least favorite person that surf these waves with his real time blow outs

batfink Saturday, 17 Jun 2023 at 04:33 pm new

Ouch, hurt just to watch.

Best of luck in recovery Mr Longbottom.

Stu, you can give him a few tips on dealing with broken ribs and collapsed lung.

How’s your recovery going, big fella?

Ray Shirlaw Saturday, 17 Jun 2023 at 10:25 pm new

Go back in a bigger swell with longer interval. Itll be even better....trust me
