Yeah there's a whiff of advertorial in here, some sort of back scratch to the makers of Red Digital, but the footage captured by them makes the inclusion worthwhile.
Since 'Done', released back in 2012, John John has had an eye for both quality and continuity between all his video features. Continuity achieved with editing, fonts used, and the style of storytelling, and quality via his use of Red's ever-improving roster of digital cameras.
Camera nerds may get the most out of this clip, though there's enough hot surfing to keep everyone happy.

He is so good it’s scary..if only his knees held up ..who knows how many world titles he could have won !!
The locations and conditions have also let him down.
I don't think he will have much trouble transitioning into life after contests. He has so many interests and is developing other skills along the way.

Im not going to buy one but at least John John sounds genuine about his belief in the product rather than a full on salesman bullshitting.
With what he’s into, his talent, demeanour and resources, I’ve got no idea why he’d want to chase the CT.
On a limb here, but perhaps being touted as the one of the best surfers of his peers since day dot, even though John naturally comes across a legitimate humble guy, subconsciously has something to prove to the world
Because, as you’ve stated, why else would we he want to be there. Perhaps just a competitive beast that juxtaposes his seemly natural demeanour.
Oh yeah he’s been open in a podcast or two about how competitive he is. I think it’s more him against him. He enjoys the challenge of attempting to surf comps with the freedom and flow he does free surfing…….as you say I think he deep down enjoys winning.

Optics are the first priority for standout footage.
Outstanding, absolutely outstanding. The WSL will throw up another 'World Champion' but there's no doubt (in my mind anyway) he's the best going around and has been for some time.
