Watch: Big Day At Ericeira

Peniche may not have delivered during the waiting period for the Supertubos CT, yet elsewhere in Portugal winter has been a boon to surfers.

There's a few regular faces in this clip of Coxos, some well-ridden waves too, however the wave itself is the star. The best of them have a driving barrel on the outside and arching bowl on the inside - hollow all the way.

Pumping!!
Not a NVR fan but that first one was nuts.

Was it just me but does it break a bit like Honolua Bay ?

Say what you will about “Brand NVR” but he’s got one awesome pig dog….

Did anyone notice that clean up set, all these guys turning a duck dive into a bail….is that some euro technique? My experience of that is that really embarrassing thing you used to do as a learner where you’d go to duck dive and the board would go shooting back out the wrong way much to the amusement of the pack.

Thought exactly the same thing Bungan and didn't really see the need for the board bailing. Unnecessary and downright dangerous. Wasn't that big. Those blokes wouldn't get out at my local beachie on a big day.

Lived in Ribamar for 3 months in early 90s working for Nick at Semente surfboards. Such an awesome place, massive variety of waves, great people and food. A cross between Angourie and Lennox is Coxos .

Pretty sure we would have met, Mal. Spent a bit of time there early 90s, and got a few boards from Nick.

Nick picked me up hitch-hicking up to Coxos in 91... was in awe of the guy, coz I only went there because of a magazine articule I'd read about him and Ericieria previously. I was a kid, sleeping in my boardbag at Ribeira D'ilhas... sighhh those were the days!

Looks like one of the nicest waves in the world.

Yeah, but there's something about that angle that makes everything seem more user-friendly.

Had a session one morning with RCJ. It was very big and the right direction swell. Just the two of us trading barrels for a couple of hours until we got washed in half way between Coxos and ribamar. We laughed all the way back up the path. Miguel, Steve, and a few others where stoked for us and always great locals to surf and party with.

That would have been epic!

Yeah it was and He showed me how it was done on this world class wave.
All these years later i still can't understand that ASP/WSL have never had a event there.
Even though back in the day Nick had a big wave contest at Coxos for a few years.
That we were both invited to.
Fuck knows, but proper powerful barreling point with a mean slab close by. Completely opposite to the shit wave they have the comps down the way.

Hows that board of NVR's, rips the 1st wave, envious of anyone that's surfed the area.

Had it like this one day in 94, just me and a yank who I met in Ericeira. We talked there from town. Couldn't believe our eyes when we got there - no-one out. Surfed it just the 2 of us until I got slammed on the reef and lost a chunk of flesh. Pre-internet, pre rent-a-crowd.

These days, it's challenging - to say the least - for non-locals to get a wave at Coxos.
