Watch: Quality Kandui
While recently aboard the Mangalui, videographer Jesse Little lucked into this incredible day at Kandaui. The lineup was full of hard-charging surfers, many anonymous, plus the occasional comp warrior, and one eleven-time champ.
The waves were big and perfect, yet far from flawless; the channel angle showing how hard the crew were working for the payoff.
And when it doesn't payoff..?
At 6:44 Reef Heazlewood shows what happens when you fly too close to the sun.

Crazy clip. Few broncos wrangled in amongst that lot.
Way too intense for me. As in wouldn't have a chance, and also that the surfing rarely looks beautiful but hectic.

Baron Mamiya would have to be in the top 5 backside barrel riders in the world. His control is incredible.
Also noted that the pipe crew are handling themselves very well A few similarities between the two waves.

6:44 then again at 4:43 are about the only moments I'll ever relate to Reef Heazlewood
Out of all of them Kelly still looks to have the most time on the wave. Most in control.
That's fella's joints are still crazy good for his age too. Might not be WCT standard anymore but he's a specimen nonetheless.
The footage is not from last year...Kelly is on a differant board, but just as good. Inspiration for everyone to be able to perform at this level in his 50's.
Kandui is a brutal wave at this size. The last section horsehoes around back into you, and all the water drains off it. Video does not do it justice.

Actually, I'm calling two years ago. July/Aug 2022. Have seen photos from Ted Grambeau of Kelly and Reef in same boardies / rashies etc with metadata 3rd july 2022. Not that it's a biggie.

Those were the days.
Definately 100% was on 3rd July 2022 for the arvo session where Reef got cut up. Was in the channel with my surf trip crew watching for a couple of hours that arvo although the iphone footage we took of some of those waves in the clip doesn't quite do it justice. Kelly by far best surfer out there with Reef close second.
It was quite a show to watch live!

Kelly looked amazing , but wasn't a standout , in the session .
Lots of good surfers there , that day .
Such a heavy wave and not easy on backhand, although the GOAT makes it look easy.
Surfed it a 4-6 foot and that was intimidating enough, over 6 foot they can have it!
