Watch: Shipsterns Bluff // As Big As It Gets

Much as the Victorian coast has had a great run of swell, so too have the south-facing corners of the Tasmanian coast - Shippies among them.

In fact, swell hasn't been an issue, just waiting for the right wind. Last Friday presented a small window of opportunity, with blustery onshores slowly giving way to lighter cross/offshore wind.

Rather than sit and wait, the small local crew, plus Kipp Caddy, forced the issue, surfing what filmmaker Kyron Rathbone called "some of the most hectic conditions ever seen."

It's not pretty but it's highly entertaining.

Was that a slightly straighter swell direction than what we are used to seeing? It felt like the barrel was shorter post step.

Swell was fairly west. Comes in more to the end bowl when south.

Or was it the shorter period swell causing that?

Kip has no fear, plenty of talent, and giant knackers.

That wipeout of Mikeys was sick, lucky he had the penthrox green whistle handy.
