Watch: John John Florence // 'Here'

Reels

Late last week, John John released his latest edit. Unlike many of his other edits, which wrap themselves around particular themes or places, the best of which is the incomparable 'Maps Of Home', 'Here' is a montage of short-record moments, not all of which happen in the surf, and none of which are recent - it was all filmed last North Shore season.

Still, it's John John doing John John things and that's reason enough to click aboard.

If you want to see something a touch more recent here's video of JJF at Sunset Beach yesterday morning.

He is easy to watch. Nice cameos by the brothers. That sandbar double up footage was nuts.

Surfalot67 Monday, 6 Jan 2025 at 06:44 pm

Bloody Hell! Looking so strong and any injury niggles clearly long gone. As an aside, do you think Fearlipe looks at John's edits and wonders why the f he would want to come back? This is what a real world champ looks like

nicko74 Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 05:23 pm

John is the real deal!

t-diddy Monday, 6 Jan 2025 at 07:01 pm

Fuck that is good! Wonder is John helps with the edit - seen him with a camera a few times. Ivan clearly has a different father based on his relative density of body hair. Not that it matters their life has always been one to envy (I remember seeing the whole fam on the north shore when I lived there in the 00s)

udo Monday, 6 Jan 2025 at 07:44 pm

Ivan Kilmister :-]

t-diddy Monday, 6 Jan 2025 at 07:01 pm

Mom - what a babe!

Alex Papas Monday, 6 Jan 2025 at 07:26 pm

oh my god that full wrap cutty to rebound in the Insta clip, just after the tube.. you love to see it. Imo one of the best manoeuvres, made sweeter if the surfer has read the wave so well they get more sections later (rather than it being performed and the wave runs away from them). HOOWEE!

goofyfoot Monday, 6 Jan 2025 at 08:23 pm

Watched this on the tv this morning, seeing it on a bigger screen and not on your phone lets you see the little things he does that are just mind blowing. He’s so far on a different level to anyone else it’s ridiculous.
On a pumping day at Pipe he’d get more incredible tubes than anyone would get in their life.

wally Monday, 6 Jan 2025 at 09:20 pm

It’s only a 3 to 4 second bit of footage, but I thought the grab starting at 12:18 when the bloke on the back of the jetski swings his arm to usher along the big tube spit was pretty cool

Genuine question here. Is John John the greatest surfer of all time? World title numbers aside? For me it’s an easy yes. Zero weaknesses and impeccable style.

Solitude Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 06:11 am

Yes

goofyfoot Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 06:16 am

Yes for me.

bobh Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 02:31 pm

Yes .

DAW Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 04:03 pm

yes with a large gap to 2nd

kimbo1 Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 06:29 pm

Where do you see Kellys weeknesses ? or areas in his style he needed to work on ? im talking about when he was in same age bracket as JJ today .

nextswell Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 09:16 pm

Work at a little surfboard shop for extra $ on a Saturday. A month back flicked through a bunch of old dvds and put on Kelly v irons 2003 pipe final. Kelly reads a wave so well but Andy’s style was better. Andy won and Kelly cried.
To your point John’s more comfortable in big waves than anyone on tour, his turns are smoother and bigger than Kelly’s ever were. He holds a rail longer and transitions between turns better than Kelly. Oh yeah the airs are better and his not a narcissist. Enough?

kimbo1 Monday, 13 Jan 2025 at 08:12 am

Fairly sure a record of 5 Teahupo'o , 4 Cloudbreak and 8 Pipeline titles could be evidence that Kelly was more than comfortable in big waves while on the tour . Style , well thats subjective . But , never has a tour surfer done more outrageous maneuvers with style than Kelly ( watch the WSL awards ). You have said enough about not liking his character and thats all .

More tubes please Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 10:54 pm

Kelly’s big weakness has always been Sunset and deep water waves in general. John John and Andy have done amazing things out there that Kelly hasn’t come close to.

Island Bay Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 06:34 pm

Andy.

Island Bay Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 06:37 pm

And several others with vastly better style than jjf, imho.

Yes, he's fucken good, but not the Messiah.

More tubes please Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 11:02 pm

AI over Kelly all day. John John seems to me to be an evolution of Andy in a lot of ways, albeit without the personality.

Controversial maybe, but I’d say peak Bruce is right up there too. Some of his old video parts like Campaign 1 and Bruce Movie are still incredible.

goofyfoot Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 09:15 pm

I know it’s pointless to even mention it but imagine Jonny and Andy going toe to toe in pumping waves.
That would be as good as it gets.

nextswell Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 09:32 pm

Andy in the right mind was amazing and a competitive beast. He got Kelly out of his hiatus and then beat him. In a different life though imo if he saw John’s massive top turn (hack) he’d be blown away and proud.

southernraw Wednesday, 8 Jan 2025 at 10:30 am

A.I for me still.
Had a stronger backhand imo.

Sprout Wednesday, 8 Jan 2025 at 10:34 am

Yes. John can do things no other surfer can do; there's nothing the other way around.

Yendor Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 07:21 am

Shout out to the filmers and the gear. These John clips are always next level quality, crispy. Of course the nuts surfing helps too. Those double up popups on the sandbar are bonkers, so close to nailing them.

basesix Wednesday, 8 Jan 2025 at 11:49 am

unreal, hey? deft hands and sharp minds.. the third section is da gobsmacking surf-porn reward, but only after the middle section of playful bros (I laughed out loud three times, and marveled at the skill-set needed to be that responsive and hairy-grin improv in freaky beachies).

but I think the first section is my fave edit-wise.. slows you right down to cloud/tree-canopy/deep-sea pace.

..flash a bit of big operatic stuff, epic swell, whales, rice fields, storm horizons, for scale and context, but they show you explicitly the film's point is 'the little things' by taking time over the caress of naked foam, the moment of the drop, a bird in flight, copping a chandelier in the chops, fleeting family moments..

..the music tells you it’s all about the playful minutia too, juxtaposing ominous sounding weather reports.. anyhoo, nice stuff. promotes the brothers florence very well.

title a bit of a cap-doff to this fresh-faced hobbit biopic?

Yendor Wednesday, 8 Jan 2025 at 01:14 pm

Very eloquently put and I agree.

nicko74 Tuesday, 7 Jan 2025 at 05:24 pm

Best edit going atm

tip-top1 Wednesday, 8 Jan 2025 at 07:01 pm

really good watch , makes the unmakeable look makeable.
the best ever?? dont know but he's top 3 for sure in my view

Johan Wohlleben Thursday, 9 Jan 2025 at 12:23 am

Best, so subtle you don’t even notice what he is actually doing

ron Thursday, 9 Jan 2025 at 10:59 am

His Red camera quality is amazing. Always has a completely different look to everything else i watch. Some of the music was on the nose to my taste but can't win 'em all.

If he gets on the content production with Nate full time at some stage we are going to see the most amazing surf movies ever. Essentially unlimited budgets with unlimited surfing abilities caught on the best cameras.

Dan87 Saturday, 11 Jan 2025 at 12:28 pm

Epic!
I love Nathan paddling for the wave, missing it, then having ditch as he cops it on the head. Would like to see that from another cam, assuming it was massive. I always wonder whether they cut out any time under the water because it seems so short, but probably not. Always seems longer when you're there!
Reminds me of surfing Mawi in lombok last year on a solid swell. Was out with one other bloke and almost got cleaned up by a rogie but both of us just made it over. Over the next hour we started creeping closer to the take off zone as we got more comfortable. Crew of 3 blokes paddled out and were asking how it was. I said fun but looks like it's dropping off.. rookie mistake. Mega clean up lines up and we all start paddling for the horizon. I start laughing because none of us are going to make it. We all ditch. One snapped leggy and one snapped board. The set was so hectic it washed all of us in almost to the beach but then sucked us all back out again, no paddling against it! Luckily the bloke with the snapped leggy found the other half of the broken board and they were able to get back in. Return to 2 of us in the line up!

southernraw Sunday, 12 Jan 2025 at 09:32 am

His chances of another title just went up.
Looks like Medina's out for a fair chunk of the season with an injury.

goofyfoot Sunday, 12 Jan 2025 at 09:55 am

That sucks, him and John injury free makes the tour much more exciting.

southernraw Sunday, 12 Jan 2025 at 02:50 pm

Agreed mate. Seems to be the tale of their careers that one or the other is always injured and we don't get to see them going head to head.

Sprout Sunday, 12 Jan 2025 at 11:00 am

Who gets first bite at the injury wildcard, Joao or the Costco world champ?

Surfalot67 Sunday, 12 Jan 2025 at 12:49 pm

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Flippy get an automatic wildcard as a former world champ? I'd say coming back onto the tour after all his failures-to-launch would probably be the ballsiest thing he's ever done. That ego must be bullet proof to be able to mentally put that aside

goofyfoot Sunday, 12 Jan 2025 at 01:48 pm

So Hawaii has been having an exceptional season for waves and I haven’t seen one clip of Fil.
Is he even there?
What’s going to happen if he comes back this year and first comp Pipe is bombing?
I can’t see how he can come back.
Seriously what will he do if Pipes huge?
You’d think he may have been there for a few weeks trying to grow a set and learn off a Pipe specialist ala Adriano and JOB or Italo and Dorian.
Surely the mental health side of things could not take another no show at pipe due to shitting himself?

Surfalot67 Sunday, 12 Jan 2025 at 01:57 pm

100% agree GF. If he had been taking the time off to actually sort out his skill set in waves of consequence, surely we would have seen some clips drop by now?

dawnperiscope Sunday, 12 Jan 2025 at 03:47 pm

I find it hard to imagine throwing himself over the ledge is all of sudden going to become a thing. He's almost 30, has plenty of coin and pretty much no chance of winning a world title with the season ender at Cloudbreak.
I wouldn't be surprised if he hits the KS WCT program and just starts surfing events when it suits him.

freeride76 Sunday, 12 Jan 2025 at 03:59 pm

Two weeks out from the season opener and crickets.

Same with Steph Gilmore.

Surfalot67 Monday, 13 Jan 2025 at 08:01 am

I thought I saw a return of Steph post on the WSL Facey page. I'll see if I can find it

Surfalot67 Monday, 13 Jan 2025 at 10:13 am

Here it is Steve, Jan 3rd announcing Steph and Flippy back

burleigh Sunday, 12 Jan 2025 at 04:50 pm

No surprise Toledo hasn't spent any time in Hawaii while it's having one of the best seasons that i can remember. Sad, but not surprising.

rj-davey Monday, 13 Jan 2025 at 08:27 am

Been frothing on that second (or maybe 3rd) section at 3:54. Hadn't listened to Joywave before but I'm loving that song too.
