Sick. Lots of action.
Pumping! Hawaii Pipeline BodyBoarding Championship waiting period starts tomorrow too.
Perfect!
Can you go right off the 2nd reef roll-in and kick out before things get hairy?
Maybe, but not really. If the wave's big enough to break Second Reef it's too big for Backdoor.
That said, in his biography 'Bustin Down The Door', Rabbit ends the Hawaiian chapter of his life with a session on Pipe's outside reefs shared with Shaun Tomson. Rab rolls into a bomb then overcome with nostalgia at his old sparring partner joining him in the water, swings right into Backdoor, gets mercilessly flogged to the point that he rolls up the beach, then signs it off:
"And that, in all honesty, is the last great thing I ever did."
Worth reading the book for that moment alone.
Haha, that's a great quote. Never read, must do.
But yeah, I'm obsessed with roll-ins. (Got one today into a nice backhand barrel.)
It's a great book.
Cooking.
And fairly uncrowded.
This is much better than the other “live” surf comp from last week. It’s pumping
Right!
fark that guy just got pole axed
This is insane
old mate nearly makes the 2nd reef roll in of his life... nemo grabbed his leggy on the exit
Fark, how's that 2nd reef one that guy fully backdoor'd and made, but then fell after the spit! Aghhhh.
Snap Dawny.
Classic.
it was terrifying watching him pick his line with those slow pumps. After the booger pulled off the previous wave before it hit the inside, I thought he had no chance.. and then the magic happened! Not sure i've ever seen anything like that before.
Cruel, aye
Incredible light.
Is this just cause?
Jeeeezus. Makai Macnamara brought back to life on the beach at Pipe today.
This one brought a tear to the eye.
Insane rescue effort and hats off to all involved. Legends!!!
Fark!
Holy shit, Eli trying compressions in the water, so heavy.
Yeah super heavy. Shows how hard it is to get someone in with all that current and moving water. Imagine on a remote break with only you and one other. Great team work but lots of effort.
Agreed. And you can see how well drilled everyone is...both surfers and lifeguards. This isn't their first rodeo. Amongst the frantic energy there is structure and procedure that is detached from the emotion of the moment.
Pretty crazy seeing his brother standing above him, basically clapping rhythmically to some devine force from above to send him some life energy. That's the bit that got me. Incredible effort and makes you proud to be a surfer.
Was just watching that rescue. Fucking crazy. He looked close to not coming back?
He’s such an insane pipe surfer.
Best outcome ever hey.
Yeah i reckon that was as close as they come goofy.
Hopefully alls ok from here.
.
do the clubbies in Aus still use the rope pull in rescue? ie swim out with the rope grab the person get pulled back in?.
Not a reel on the beach, as they used to, but a clubbie will swim out with a rope thrown over their shoulder, and attached to the other end is a yellow 'tube' - a foam floatation device - and they'll buckle that around a person, then swim in
Why not combine the two? Swim out, give floatation device, get towed in. Why make the clubbie have to swim it?
Sure the reel can be stationed and be mobile.
Reels were phased out as they are dangerous for the guy performing the rescue
Yeah I could imagine them getting towed under the waves and also if holding onto the body, forcing extra, unwanted water into the airways?
Wonder how feasible it would be to have a JetSki out there for rescues like this.
Lifeguards could alternate on it during the day possibly?
They’d get the patient to the beach much quicker and without extra waves washing over the top of them possibly forcing water into their lungs when people are trying to paddle them in through the impact zone.
Probably unrealistic but just a thought
There was one out there during this session doing rescues, but maybe it was beached at this time?
There often is a jet ski out there, though not always lifeguards.
I last surfed it on a wild day in 2019 and a ski driver watched my mate and I battle the impact zone, offering no help at all. Turned out it was a test of sorts. When we both broke through the guy on the ski came over, made sure we knew the signals, and said only to call for help if we really needed it.
Was a fairly small crowd and if anyone got blasted he'd come in to make sure they were OK.
He wasn't an official lifeguard, just doing Good Sammo work. With the number of injuries this year you'd have to think it'd be a consideration by the lifeguards.
You get a few?
Nothing memorable.
Add that to the TB disclaimer ;-)
I was wondering how long his brain was starved of oxygen. Hope all upstairs it in good nick very nasty situation.
Makai got a smoker before coming unstuck, closeup of the first responder .
Sick one @supa.
The one that did him over was a foamy one.
I hear them always saying about Pipe, don't go the foamy ones. Trouble.
Would be hard to know when taking off though.
Props to Stu and other swellnutters for even getting amongst it.
Something I, and 99.99 percent of the surfing population will never experience.
Just had a look around the NS cams: clean, overhead, and barely anyone out. Surfed out?
