Watch: Shane Ackerman // Astronaut In The Ocean

Stu Nettle (stunet)
Reels

"Doormat, esky lid, booger, shark biscuit, myna bird of the sea, dick dragger..."

Water off a duck's back for Shane Ackerman, who in just a few years of wave-riding made everyone, even hardcore stand-ups, stop and take notice.

Shane's heavy water trajectory wasn't obvious; a skinny kid who didn't like the water, he was slowly drawn to ever-heavier waves. You'll see from the clip that making the wave is sometimes incidental to testing his body agaisnt the power of the wave.

It's only short, clocking in at 11-minutes but Astronaut In The Ocean is a tidy bit of content marketing from Yeti.

"who ever that was......died". Classic!

Love his passion. Imagine some of his POVs. Good luck to him.

More tubes please Friday, 2 May 2025 at 12:48 pm

Damn that was good. Meanwhile surfing has a highly paid 2x world champ who refuses to take off on anything hollow over 4ft. Kind of makes you wonder.

Sprout Friday, 2 May 2025 at 12:59 pm

Fantastic. Lunatic.

coxypk Friday, 2 May 2025 at 01:48 pm

Mad dog.

Moonah Friday, 2 May 2025 at 06:57 pm

That thing he swims under at The Right is the stuff of nightmares.
And the story he tells about it makes it even worse.

Up there with Mark Healey and not many more when it comes to fearless

what_up Friday, 2 May 2025 at 07:38 pm

basesix Friday, 2 May 2025 at 07:59 pm

peabo Friday, 2 May 2025 at 10:58 pm

Legend.

That wipe out POV footage from tahiti reaffirms my lack of desire to ever surf waves like that.

Swany Saturday, 3 May 2025 at 01:12 am

So mental. That’s what happens when you get stuffed in a dark one at chopes. As close as I want to get

sean killen Saturday, 3 May 2025 at 08:27 am

MM Saturday, 3 May 2025 at 10:27 am

Bodyboard is the new soul surfing, but with an added Zen craziness.

scrotina Saturday, 3 May 2025 at 11:36 am

Supafreak Saturday, 3 May 2025 at 03:54 pm

Truly one of the better surf videos I’ve seen in a long time .

Barry Clarke Saturday, 3 May 2025 at 04:25 pm

Love how theres no big ego crap, just a guy doing it for the fun of it, doesnt look fun to me tho, i'd b the guy paddling for the shoulder with my heart in my mouth

Nick Bone Sunday, 4 May 2025 at 03:03 pm

Rippa!

blackers Sunday, 4 May 2025 at 09:19 pm

stew_asu Sunday, 4 May 2025 at 10:44 pm

Awesome, honest doco. Seriously mad charger, surprised Red Bull hasn't signed him up. Living large Man, respect

stew_asu Sunday, 4 May 2025 at 10:54 pm

Gives SWL a whole new meaning

MM Monday, 5 May 2025 at 01:52 am

The most terrifying wave I've ever seen ridden is in this clip.

dstrosberg Monday, 5 May 2025 at 06:45 pm

What happened to him in that last one?

MM Monday, 5 May 2025 at 10:46 pm

I'm not sure if he made the last one at Teahupo'o. The wave that would have had me soiling my wetsuit is the one at the Right about 2:00 in.

SquattyCutback Monday, 5 May 2025 at 11:21 am

No ego. Just courage, skill and the love of surfing. That was epic.

dstrosberg Monday, 5 May 2025 at 06:37 pm

F. off cray cray

AlfredWallace Monday, 5 May 2025 at 06:37 pm

Love Shane’s ethos and outlook on life.

We are only here for a short while, do what you love doing, the rest just falls in place. Kudos to you young man. AW

garyg1412 Monday, 5 May 2025 at 08:27 pm

Fuck me what an absolute charger. That was inspiring stuff.

Bad Currawong Monday, 5 May 2025 at 09:08 pm

Bodyboarding is pit-diving on an esky lid. Nothing else I'd rather do...

Shane is bloody Legend!

Bubble elder Monday, 5 May 2025 at 10:49 pm

Epic stuff! Far out that is impressive. I can't fathom how he can commit to take off on most of those!

2stroke Tuesday, 6 May 2025 at 08:16 am

First thought was….what? No helmet even? But I think the consequences of those waves are beyond any help a helmet might bring.

marcus Thursday, 15 May 2025 at 10:41 am

He's a charger, but also a really nice guy
