Watch: Tubefest at Newy

Last Friday, while heats of Surfest were going down at Merewether, a combo of swell, tide, and wind elevated the Dixon Park / Pogos stretch into something beyond mere suburban beachie.

When competitors twigged to what was happening, they paddled 200 metres north and forced the judges and camera crew to squint into the sun. 'Twas a great outcome for the competitors and the people viewing at home, not so the rec surfers in the water who had to relinquish the bank.

Reminds me of South Straddie if you squint a bit.

Not unlike that South African, (Durban)? beachbreak featued on swellnet a month or so ago. Nice footage.

Funny thing is...it wasn't even the best bank on the beach...

Your good fortune, crg!

Indeed it was IB!!
Actually across the whole contest week and before the contest, anytime there were waves it was relatively uncrowded and I found all the contest surfers to be ultra respectful.

Seconded. ‘Twas a great week of waves and I always find the CS/CT/QS surfers to be respectful, friendly, and generous when they’re here.

Was the same here- surfed with a few a week before the comp and they were super friendly and respectful.
Quite a pleasure to surf with actually.

Wow nice, and uncrowded!

tubeshooter Friday, 13 Jun 2025 at 06:18 pm

It's such a great stretch of beach when it fires.
Plenty of elbow room between all the banks.

The artful soa… Saturday, 14 Jun 2025 at 11:15 am

There really isn’t. When it fires, the crowd on the stretch resembles the Goldie points.

This particular day was an anomaly. I think maybe most locals either bailed up/down the coast because they knew there were heaps of pros in town for the comp, or assumed it would be too crowded so didn’t even bother checking the stretch. Those that did scored though!

I think you are right Artful...just have to look at today in the water...nice clean conditions but not a patch on that day in the video...Merewether Boardriders comp on the point...another comp on at Dixon...probably 60 surfers crammed onto the Pogo's bank...no sand or waves at Clif's...and another 100 people from Bar reef down to South Bar.
Not exactly elbow room.

Wow, I've never really seen it that bad, but I haven't been there much in the last decade or two.
Bummer.
I lived in the area until my mid 20's.
