The Mighty J'Bay Pro forum thread

We did it last comp and it worked OK, so here we are again with only a little bit of prompting from Zen.

We'll run forecasts and comp updates on the homepage but everything else, the banter, board talk, and inevitable conspircay theories can go in here.

Blowin Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 06:28 pm new

Is this thing a foregone conclusion or is Fred going to topple another giant ?

Blowin Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 06:44 pm new

Toledo not scared to unleash.

So good to watch.

Fred looking a bit like a millennial Bede Durbidge by comparison.

I was way more impressed by that floater than any aerial I've ever seen. Fucking crazy.

Shatner'sBassoon Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 06:44 pm new

Fuck, Blowie, maaaate, you must be spent! Watching, commenting, self-fellating. You're a one-man band!

"Drink it Freddie, drink it!"

Hang on, was that you in that old Milo ad??

Blowin Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 06:46 pm new

Parko looks chubby faced....and Fred could've got an extra section out of that barrel. Might cost him.

Dale -Cooper Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 06:47 pm new

Give 'em Milo!

Dale -Cooper Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 06:48 pm new

Milo Yiannopoulos

Blowin Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 07:03 pm new

Zero chance that wave of Fred's was the best wave of the heat so far.

Dale -Cooper Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 07:06 pm new

Yeah, it was.

thermalben Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 07:09 pm new

That floater was phenomenal. So critical.

indo-dreaming Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 07:11 pm new

Well there goes the end of over scoring of Morais.

zenagain Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 07:13 pm new

Great comp and the two finalists really earned their slots.

Well, better get back to work. It wass fun.

Blowin Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 07:15 pm new

Always love a happy ending.

Great entertainment.

Shatner'sBassoon Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 07:20 pm new

"Always love a happy ending."

No comment necessary.

flow Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 07:21 pm new

If Fred had pulled in and extended the barrel he would have won. That said, Toledo deserved the win.

Blowin Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 07:24 pm new

Look at the head on the bloke carrying the board.

Ultra gurn.

Looked like he'd necked some pills at the start of the final and they'd just hit him like a tonne of bricks.

talkingturkey Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 07:27 pm new

"Did you see that wall Wilko just took off on ?

Better go get some tissues....."

Now THAT is a "no comment necessary" comment, Shatner!

Blowin Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 07:41 pm new

Shit trophy.

Maybe not shit , but definitely underwhelming .

goofyfoot Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 07:44 pm new

This connest made me excited to watch pro surfing again. Fuck the last few days have been phenomenal.

goofyfoot Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 07:46 pm new

Ps. The best surfers in the world are on the WSL. No doubt about it

crg Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 08:21 pm new

After pumping 4ft + waves for the whole contest I think the best surfer for the comp won...who'd have thought at j-bay that would be Toledo...not me...

Rabbits68 Thursday, 20 Jul 2017 at 08:34 pm new

And he's only 22yrs old! Didn't realise he was so young. Look out!

tonybarber Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 09:47 am new

For me, given a good quality surf, there several blokes that will step up and make the championship a good challenge. Maybe JJF won't be the clear leader.

Gary G Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 10:16 am new

10000 x this, Goofy.

It's one thing to nail a clip after 10000 attempts. It's another thing entirely to do it on the big stage when the chips are down.

stunet Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 10:59 am new

Sure, timeless style and all, but you don't really think that Curren's turns were as hard, fast, and committed as Jordy's?

No wonder people complain about judging.

Blowin Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 11:10 am new

Put Toledo on a 6'6 ( Curren was on a 6'9 ) and brief him on mimicking Curren's flow and I reckon he'd go close.

He is that good.

indo-dreaming Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 11:19 am new

Jordy, Toledo..nah both great surfers.

But JJF has much more of what Curren had in style, flow and just placement on a wave, especially his uncanny barrel sense.

That Curren footage is timeless though, especially seeing his board was so long.

gibbsy Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 11:25 am new

On Felipe..... he took the criteria redefinition he applied to that small final at snapper in 2' surf(2015?) to 6'+ surf at jbay and redefined it again. Amazing performance heat on heat. He continues to improve. If he applies the same diligence as ADS to areas of weakness(in this case big barreling lefts)he'll be near unstoppable. What he needs to work out now is the shortest plane route to Tahiti, get a nice place on the point and move in for the next 6 weeks until the event starts.
On JBay.... If you were to watch any heat again and place an average joe, or even a good surfer on nearly any of those waves, not many would link it end to end. What a challenging technical wave. Even fewer would put half the turns down that the 44 were. Those guys are brilliant surfers all.

Dale -Cooper Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 11:31 am new

@Stunet, interesting comment. I don't know exactly what committed means or is meant to mean, but, anyway, I put forward that no! Jordy's turns weren't as hard and fast as the great man's. Perhaps driving can be chucked in there as well. Why? Well, apart from it being Tom Curren, boards. Rail on boards. Rail in water. Volume.

@Blowin', I reckon someone briefed Toledo on Florence's top turns/carves at Margs, 'cos he's mimicking them. Mimicking them.

Mimic.

I don't know. Not for mine.

Maybe Toledo can and will mimic Tom Curren's set rail and drive off the bottom at waves that are fit for purpose.

But why bother? He's the man. Now.

Apparently.

stunet Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 11:35 am new

Gimme more o' that ol' man nostalgia...

Fleazool Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 11:35 am new

Speed, power & flow. Curren gets it for me.
It was Toms first wave out there too, probably Jordy's 200th.

talkingturkey Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 11:40 am new

To be fair, Toledo is a quick learner and he's committed to learning whatever it takes to WIN!

Or something.

Where's (a) Sean Holmes when you need 'em?

And will/can Toledo mimic Kong at Sunset (if need be)?

Rabbits68 Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 11:42 am new

Both Jordy & Curren looked amazing surfing those waves IMO. So difficult to compare eras, too many variables.....

Dale -Cooper Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 11:52 am new

"Gimme more o' that ol' man nostalgia..."

Again, interesting comment. Someone on this thread questioned what the demographic on here was. I'm guessing older gentlemen. 40+?

Life begins at 40. The (clichéd) crisis. What to do? Stave off a creeping nostalgia or rather the perception of succumbing to it and EMBRACE THE NEW (even beyond all reason)? Or reject?

It's not an either/or proposition.

Actually, probably going and surfing J-Bay would be the winner. Who's been? Who's going?

Shatner'sBassoon Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 12:14 pm new

I've been. I'm going again.

Outside circus time, of course.

Go and flow, baby, flow.

tonybarber Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 12:18 pm new

From the clip by Snuffy, Jordy was definitely above Curren. But the styles are different and what was deemed to be a more difficult manoeuvre was different.
But if you follow the wave closely it is amazing how similar the waves were - after 20 odd years !!

Shatner'sBassoon Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 12:19 pm new

Herc, you been?

And there's a newish bloke over your neck of the woods (well, that coast) that surfed it better than most of this current crop. In and out of competition. Well, I thought so.

Funny, can't seem to locate any footage at this point in (no) time. Work, hey?

Get to it, swoll-nuts.

Dale -Cooper Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 12:22 pm new

"From the clip by Snuffy, Jordy was definitely above Curren."

@Tony Barber (is that your real name? Kool), how and why?

stunet Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 12:57 pm new

Why? Because Jordy was starting his carves earlier and holding them longer.

Fuck, no wonder surfers have to get coaches like Micro.

Perhaps I should get in on the racket?

Dale -Cooper Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 01:33 pm new

Off the bottom?

Actually, apart from Curren's funky lay-back thing, off the top too? If so, by how much of a stretch?

Again, taking into account board differences?

And let's not go into the "how"...

I do concur, yep, it's a racket.

stunet Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 01:38 pm new

Nah, I'm charging for that info now.

Shatner'sBassoon Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 01:38 pm new

Fuck, where's Derek Hynd when you need him? TC two-stage bottom turn anyone?

Horses for courses.

Actually, this one's for Herc. And Blowie.

Read through it. You be the judge.

Aaaah, nostalgia.

I'm even pictured!!

Herc Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 01:41 pm new

'Herc, you been'

Gidday shats, no, there's a reason that bloke you mention shifted. Plus, wordy has it that some of the boys, not exactly known for chargin' too hard, (unlike some champin' swillnuts), even found it lacking. I'm pretty spoiled, years and years and years and years and years and years of it (shit where were we again) oh yeh, so... nah. No doubt it has its days, they all do, but, like I said, if I stood on the cliff, and spruiked up cross shore, choppy windslop as all time perfection, even my dynamic sledging would be put to the test!

Blowin Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 01:57 pm new

Some great shots Shatner. I think I've surfed them all except for Madeira.

Nice photo of your pit. Good times.

That was a good thread.

It's a shame that Herc's photo is no longer up.

Oh wait a minute.....yep , I can still laugh just as hard from the memory .

Fraud !

groundswell Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 02:03 pm new

Heres me at jakes going right

stunet Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 02:13 pm new

Someone call for Dekka Hynd?

Skip to 1:10....or don't if you dig your 80s synths.

Shatner'sBassoon Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 02:30 pm new

Stunts, I was referring to Derek Hynd as journo cum surfing analyst cum technique coach. Like Nick Carroll. Like others. Cough cough.

Herc, J-Bay is a pretty sick wave. Forget the frothing on here. Right-points, gotta love 'em. I like SA (both of 'em). Actually, the beery right...nah, let's not go there (especially if you're 'farming' with the ILLBOY!)

As for Blowie, hmmmm...

Fraud you cry?

Check this fellas.

??

Erm, I was aware of that SB, but clearly he ain't coming so why not run some footy of him at J'Bay? You know, the contest that was just on.

Herc Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 02:44 pm new

Fuck!!! 8 -10 foot barrelin' perfection! Nuttin's changed! Fuckin surfees, ya gotta laugh ya fuckin' head off!

Poor little drivvlin swillnuttin double decker switchin' and twitchin' blowie! There's another place he dodged, and he'll never, ever, ever, ever forget! Never once had to watch out for blowie in the real world!

It'll come up at the wake... always does. And, like I said, ya can't protect em all.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Shatner'sBassoon Friday, 21 Jul 2017 at 02:59 pm new

Blowie.

Switch-footer.

With photos to match.

Is that 'fact' or some kind of euphemism?

(and please, location names not necessary)

(and my bro stole my old photo stash)

(though he's got some rippers of his own now)

(right now!)
