An Open Letter to the Devout Brazilian Roman Catholic Surfers of the WCT
Hey guys,
Much as I appreciate the shout outs in your post-heat interviews and Instagram posts, it’s time to stop invoking My name and giving Me credit for your competitive success.
First of all, just like every other human that’s ever been on this planet, and any of the thousand or so religions that have been cooked up, you’ve got the whole God thing spectacularly wrong. Every version of Me you’ve dreamed up is pure speculation, every creed, book or scripture written merely a mirror of the time and place they’re written, and doesn’t stand up to any objective measure.

Don’t get me wrong, cocksure globetrotting wave-rider, there’s some top advice in those books, we’re all fans of the decency, love, and forgiveness parts of the Bible and the Quran etc, but there’s no secret, exclusive moral code contained within that can’t be practiced using your basic, garden-variety, secular common sense – treating others how you’d like them to treat you, etc. It’s not rocket science.
And, seriously, there’s some bollocks – supposedly the Word of Me – in these page turners that hasn’t aged well. Whoever wrote the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy had some issues best sorted out with a psychologist, rather than turned into revenge porn. Just for the record, I NEVER told anyone to cut off unfaithful wives’ hands (Deuteronomy 25:11-12) or said I’d force parents to eat their own children as punishment for not listening to me (Leviticus 26:27-30).

Believe me when I say, well-to-do master of air and rail game, I told no-one anything of the sort. There are hundreds of such nonsenses I was supposed to have dictated to people over the 1500 years the Bible was cobbled together, but it was all imagined! Yarns repeated often and solemnly enough in a superstitious world to become real. (And yes I’m sticking to the Bible here, ’cos that’s the Supernatural Deity belief system you were born into.)
Look, there may WELL be a Me who conjures and weaves the universe into and out of existence, perhaps I simply AM existence, or the universe, but if there is such a Thing as Me, I bear bugger-all resemblance to any of your (quite frankly hilarious) personifications and imaginings so far.
But I get it, young Latino Firebrand with sticker-laden surfboard, much religious faith comes from perfectly understandable human traits, many of them very sweet. We love our family and friends, the grief we feel when they die is so sharp and painful that we wishful-think heaven into existence, so we can be consoled by imagining a heavenly reunion one day. And certainly, the idea of an afterlife makes it easier for us to contemplate that fearful day we too become a corpse. And so, smart cookies all through human history looking for power and social control have levered these two emotions – love and fear – into different versions of the same fantastic story – do the right thing and the reward of eternal life is yours, misbehave, or be born into a heathen society, and hellfire awaits. I won’t point out the resemblance that such a hell carries with the earthbound volcanic lava that inspired its imagining. And let’s not get started on the idiocy of different subsets of the same supposed faith turning on each other. (Could anything more sharply betray the human origins of religion? FFS)
I want to be clear, oh impressively lithe, bilingual athlete, I’m not against believing in things greater than yourself – in this broad respect, you’re very much on the money – and I’m actually very fond of you, despite your total self-absorption (and you Me-botherers certainly don’t have a monopoly on THAT little trait on tour).
So, for your sake and Mine, let’s stop for a moment and think, together, about what you’re actually saying when you give Me credit for, say, answering your prayers and sending you a heat-winning wave.
First of all. You’re fond of attesting to the power of prayer. It can produce miracles! Infinite Glory! Yes? Yes! You are also, presumably, not oblivious to all the messed-up crap out there. You’re aware of the 80 million people in the world right now who’ve been forced to flee their homes, 25 million of which are refugees. People trapped in lives of misery, boredom and danger, whose various prayers to various Gods (humbly asking just to be able to live at home or whatever) are seemingly not being answered as yours are. What are they doing wrong with this prayer malarkey that you seem to be doing so right? Has your virtuosity on a wave somehow magnified your virtue of prayer, and mysteriously unlocked a clear line of comms to the Divine?
You might argue that giving Me shout outs on Insta and post heat pressers is your way of demonstrating humility, but this is not the case, my tattooed, product-endorsing influencer friend, what it actually says is that you believe you deserve special favour. It makes you look like a Total Cock.
And it makes ME look like a Total Cock, too. Like I’m part of your competitive arsenal, some kind of secret weapon to unleash in clutch moments. To be prayed to as part of the pre-heat routine, acknowledged post-victory, briefly forgotten in a board-smashing post-defeat fury.
The best parts of religion and secular spiritualism are about getting over yourself. Serving others, humility. I won’t have My name attached to this myopic parade. So, stop it. Please.
Religion worked well when humanity was starting to ask questions and figure stuff out. It was understandable that gods were conjured to make sense of floods and famines, natural phenomena, locusts and loss. It was – and still can be – a good set of training wheels for decency and charity.
Dear talented, hardworking, fortunate athlete. You’re not at all a bad person. You’re great! You mean well, and of course you’re welcome to reach out to Me any time. But let’s keep those convos humble, and between us.
Oh, and it’ll serve you well to pray for something other than competitive glory. A real mixed bag of existential lollies awaits your post-singlet days – and if you’re gonna rely on Me to help you navigate that shit, put this nonsense behind you now, quick smart.

VJ. I like your style. As you’d be aware, all flora /fauna to the West of the Wallace Line pertains to Asia and ultimately across to Europe at its Western distribution border. All flora and fauna to the East of the line relates to the Indo/ Australian region, hence we don’t have monkeys, squirrels etc, you get the drift. Our flora in OZ has many of its progenitors way further north and east than most people think, Eucalyptus deglupta Mindanao Gum in the Phillipines etc. New Guinea geologically joined as part of our tectonic plate, in the last ice age 18-25,000 years you could’ve walked from Port Moresby to Hobart, fascinating stuff, well, to me it is. As an example, the ancestral plant Arillastrum gummiferum a once rainforest tree on New Caledonia is the major ancestor of all things, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Callistemon etc in OZ. I thought he may have copped a scorpion somewhere tender, but he was screaming, "Dung Beetles! Dung Beetles Johnno!" and went on to describe just how keen the beetles were to get to his doings, and how amazing it was.
Point being: the soils of Australia are incredibly nutrient poor, and soft footed marsupials capable of dropping a lot of scat enabled a host of now-extinct dung beetle species to rapidly recycle nutrients and bring much life to the centre. Do you know there was dry rainforest all the way to what would become Alice Springs, and the entire North and East were a giant Gondwanic rainforest?
The coming of fire saw these ecosystems eviscerated, no more big marsupials, no more recycling, dead heart. My own feelings at present is that a great loss of speciation coincides with the last geomagnetic excursion, about 42,000 years ago (Laschamps excursion).

When you think about that quite historically it’s very ambiguous because most fossil fuels are derived from the laying down of organic plant and animal matter , biological organisms in an aqueous environment, so maybe I’m wrong it’s my/our fault for the ongoing warming of the planet, don’t think so. It’s how we’ve used and abused our stratigraphy, cheap, easy to extract. Commerce globally still exploits incredible natural systems, don’t believe me, get on Google Earth and you can actually see the blue copper colour staining in the oceans, rivers, rivermouths, mountains etc. of. New Guinea just to name one of the places where this shit is occurring, where the Ok Tedi mining and up the Fly River where villages and people have been toxically poisoned and translocated from their own homeland all buy a greedy few companies of which some are Australian, we should be disgusted, if that happened here there would be national uproar.

The problem for me was that if God was moved to full-forward and you couldn’t see him, Hawthorn would’ve been one man down and open to a flogging by the opposition, ultimately you know, he’s not really there, what a let down for the capacity crowd who’d assembled on the day. Agree Roadkill, when I read Spinoza's view, it resonated as a plausible reality with me which has never been the case when I have been in a church. In my travels i have visited the Vatican as a tourist ( Kiddie fiddlers palace) & found nothing for me, as I'm sure many others have, I found the wealth offensive. I have found that feeling of simple truth & reality in remote villages in Indonesia on surf trips. I believe no one knows the undisputed answer to how everything came to be. Organized religion for me has never been reality. I suppose if there is a "big reveal" when we die that's when all will become clear & we will say ahh that's how all this works LOL its that simple.. I'm definitely not smart enough nor am I even interested in trying to work out the biggest question of all time when no one has ever been able to figure it out. : )

It saddens me to see this article on Swellnet. Why do you need to publish an article that mocks God, or those who believe in God? I come here for excellent surf journalism and forecasting, not to have my Faith mocked. But I suppose that is where Australian society is headed. Not upset or surprised, just saddened.

Australian society is heading down the pathway that the USA has already well trodden, way too many religious undertones creeping into our vernacular. Saying you believe in God is just an easy cop out, or that God will fix this or that, because it’s all a load of crap. God can’t fix a body ridden with bullet holes in a conflict (more likely than not started because of
religious differences ) or change a child’s future who has cerebral palsy, cure diseases in countries that have poor access to the things we take for granted, I think you get my drift. In the early eighties travelling around Europe in a fried out Kombi, surfing places that had never really seen surfers, one of the guys in our car had been brainwashed into Catholicism by his parents. When near the Pyrenees he begged us to visit Lourdes the so called Holy water town. What a con ! Thousands of people flying daily into a commercial airport to visit all the pipes spewing water out of the side wall of the church and it’s environs and dunking there sick children mostly. I watched with my jaw dropping every moment, after dunking, parents would break down, crying , tears in their eyes because it was clearly apparent that the so called Holy Water did Fuck all to allay there concerns. Is that the kind of religious beliefs you follow, it made me think of how much of the world has be conned by your organisations. We know the big church organisations are just a cover for corruption and an easy way to raise capital.
I think God and Faith had a thing going back in the early days before Mary caught God's eye...

Fair enough re him being religious, S67, but I think "ill-fated" is a bit harsh. I'm not a great fan of his time in Parliament, mainly because I reckon if he'd joined the Greens he'd have had a lot more impact.

I have to say this is a terrible idea Swellnet. When you go surfing the idea is to leave the bullshit squabbling and divisiveness on land and do something that connects you to nature and makes you a more tolerant and better person. Surfers, generally, are more inclusive and as a group they tend to try and have a postive impact on the society they live in.
This isn't it. By focussing in on small group of surfers by race and to ridicule them about their religious beliefs is not very different to spraying 'F&%$ off Brassos' on the wall of your local Australian surf break (seen it many times).
Having these opinions about Brazilian's religious beliefs or any religion is fine, however, this is a public space, and this isn't the forum to air these beliefs.

I'm not Brazilian and I'm certainly not religious, not even close. However, I did grow up in South America, which is a very catholic society, so even though I don't give a shit about Jesus, the church or any of that I do find myself using god references quite often. the funny thing is that I cringe too when I hear some of those post heat interviews when they go all out on God, but why would I waste my energy writing something that only criticizes others, who to be honest, are not really causing any harm with their fairytale Jesus stories. You say is not racist but the title clearly says "Brazilian" when many other people from other countries do the same thing.

True, there are countless celebrities from the film and tv industries in the US who consistently thank god in award ceremony speeches, along with many athletes from US and European nations. (Not to mention politicians, especially in Australia lately., sending “thoughts and prayers” to those experiencing natural disasters and atrocities.) Many athletes in many sports also display crosses/crucifixes around the neck while competing.
I wonder if this article focuses on Brazilians because they are most prominently featuring on the winners podiums lately in surfing. But it is fair to ask, would this article have been written if it had been Kolohe, Kanoa or Connor Coffin sending thanks to the man upstairs at multiple victories lately.
An entertaining and unique read. I don’t believe in god. If others do that’s fine. I take issue with those people of faith trying to enforce certain teachings or whatever you want to call it on general populations. Key ones being no abortion, no euthanasia, no contraception - although I acknowledge peoples objection to these is not always based on religious belief. I cannot get my head around how religious institutions and other offending institutions maintain the support of the congregation in this time given what we know about abuse and the cover up of it. What answer has god for this?

I’m pleased someone has brought this issue up. As a survivor or sexual, physical, phycological and emotional abuse in a religious institution I am offended by these privileged elite surfers who use the WCT as a pulpit for their faith - espousing gods plan for their life, thanking him for answering their prayers and praying to win a sporting event.
I prayed every day and night for god to stop the abuse I was subjected to - EVERY NIGHT I pleaded with him to stop this man from coming in, not to pick me, to get me out of here. It did not stop for me or millions of other survivors who prayed for the same thing. So, to see someone praying to win a SPORTING EVENT and then thanking god for helping them to win it is sickening. When he didn’t lift a finger to help millions (maybe tens of millions) of children who’s lives were destroyed by religious men and institutions. There are so many victims who have passed on this trauma to their children and have committed suicide or died from drug overdoses - is that gods plan for our lives?
I ask you this. If one of your children came to you and asked you to stop a friend, a relative, the man next door or an employee from raping them - would you ignore them and do nothing about it? God did.

In the original article, God alludes to religious relativism. That is that there are multiple interpretations of the divine which may all be ‘true’.
However, these arguments generally become faith-based. That is people ‘believe’ their own position and do not pay attention to evidence that contradicts it. This can be applied to both the religious and atheist stances.
There is no objective evidence that god exists and likewise there is no evidence that god does not exist. Logic suggests that god is a construct of early societies without sufficient scientific knowledge to understand the more abstract events of life but that is hypothesis not fact.
As such it is best to respect people, and find joy in whatever way we can. No point drawing arms to defend a god or non-god philosophy.
When you have millions of victims of sexual abuse at the hands of the church, plus billions that are left to die hungry and diseased, thanking god for a wave to win a surf contest is extremely wrong.

By nature, I lean towards irreverence, I don't think I have any truly fixed beliefs, and I also think laughing at yourself is a healthy pasttime, so I carry a sense that people do the same. Clearly, that's incorrect. I mean, invoking the Religious Vilification Act? And by email I've also been caused an out and out racist for publishing it.

I’m struggling to see how an article that takes the piss out thanking God in post heat interviews during a surfing competition qualifies as religious vilification.
However, it seems to me the author contextualises Christianity from a broad European perspective. Given the targets of the author’s satire are Brazilians, I would have expected the contextual framing to be less general, and specifically targeted at the role of Christianity in South America.
I suspect for many Brazilians, giving thanks to God for some good fortune in life would be the most mundane and everyday occurrence. Unremarkable, and hardly worth comment.
I think the author, in ignoring the specific context, is attributing characteristics to the ‘Devout Brazilian Roman Catholic Surfers’’, that are, at best, gross exaggerations - ie lack of humility and total self absorption. I would even suggest that the author goes so far as to manufacture their own target for their satirical purpose.
In terms of Woz surfing as spectator sport, the rise of the Brazilians has been a Godsend. Part of their appeal for the spectator of Anglo European heritage is that, in a world fast becoming generic, they display some distinct cultural characteristics.
I think them invoking God in post heat interviews or on social media is just that – no big thing, just part of their life (I certainly haven’t seen anything to suggest they resemble avaricious proselytising politicised Evangelicals) - and I wouldn’t want them to change. Nor should they be told to.
It’d be good if someone from Brazil could chime in here and give their take on how this stuff is seen over there.

Yeah, not sure why this thread has been aired. Each to their own I would have thought. The Brazilians that I have met on surf trips to Indo and in my my local community are good people. They are very Catholic no doubt, but also very passionate and culturally rich. In my life I have been at different stages both quite religious and also very close to atheism only a few years ago. I have experienced some of the views to a greater or lesser extent that have been shared. What I know is that life can really humble you. It did me. I have learned that grace and forgiveness are the keys to life. Blessings to everyone and I would like to thank Swellnet for putting all kinds of different articles up. It is good to read articles like this and also like the Rusty Moran article from a few years ago on the same website. I'm looking forward to Margs, hoping for a Jack Robbo win, a good showing from both JJF and the GOAT, and for Jadson Andre to get fully barrelled at the Box to make up for his wipeout last time :)

Pretty hard to see how this applies to this light-hearted bit of writing.

I think "God" is the sum total of all life in the universe which is all connected by a force or energy we are yet to understand. Our planet Earth with its combined billions of souls is like a living entity and a small part of this universal power. This is the most disappointing and saddening article published by SN I’ve come across. Why and how sports persons and indeed most of the planet’s population acknowledge ‘God’ in their context is a great topic that had the potential for decent and respectful dialogue between people on SN who may hold different viewpoints with the opportunity to learn from each other, foster understanding, and mutual edification.
Yet, from the way the article was written, it makes we wonder what the writer was trying to achieve. I ask the writer, what were you trying to achieve? If it was respectful dialogue, I don’t think this was achieved and if it was just for laughs then I find it hard to believe that taking the piss out of people and their dearest beliefs is fair game. The question of religious vilification is fair to bring up.
If the writer is really interested in the topic, why not write a respectful closed letter to the Brazilians concerned, hopefully hear their perspective, and then report back to SN with their responses and giving SN readers the opportunity to respond and share their perspectives also? As it is, the surfers referred to in the article have been by-passed and all hell broke loose. Or was that the purpose? Is SN only interested in how many comments people are making on their articles? With about a 1/3 of the globe's population claiming to follow Jesus and a dating system derived from Jesus' birth, it's a big claim to dismiss Christ sacrificing his life as a fairytale. I'm not sure how much you have looked into it but can i suggest a couple of resources to explore including The Christ Files by John Dickson and The Evidence That Demands A Verdict: Life-changing Truth For A Skeptical World by Josh McDowell.

Q 1 .....there is no physical just the spiritual......the only way to heaven/God is thru recognising Jesus as the son of God who came down to Earth in a physical form , and who preached the Gospels which is what we use as our life/moral compass......accept that Jesus died so our/mans sins were forgiven......so if and when you can accept Jesus as the son of God...Jesus told Thomas ," I am the way , the truth and the life. your second question is a bit of a ramble from Revelation to a couple of conspiracy theories......but I believe there is an elite...I am sure you know 1% of the Global population owns 50% of the Worlds assets?
So when judgement day comes and Jesus returns....a lot of what you posted is already happening.....secular people will burn in Hell.....as will those who pretend and think that just going to Church every Sunday assures a place in Heaven.......so yeah evil is everywhere , the enemy has infiltrated all walks of life.......
A question for the religious .....Do you discuss these topics and issues with non-believing friends outside of the internet ? If not why, and if so what is the most common reaction?
I only ask because I have christian friends and we never discuss anything like this.
Slightly off topic now , but I read an article today on people calling todays rain in western QLD a "Godsend" , "a gift from God" and even a "miracle". Apparently rain on Anzac day out there is pretty rare. (I realise that these comments are mostly just colloquial expressions, but it gave me a laugh none the less)

yeah I discuss Jesus/Christianity with friends who are secular humanists/atheists / Agnostics , more so now than ever before!
I mostly have very civil discussions with friends as we have mutual respect ....which of course doesn't exist on forums!
and yeah people use quotes all the time using Gods name....a gift from God/ god only knows?/ for Gods sake etc...
Yep, it's definitely easier if you have mutual respect. My friends rarely bring it up and some of them are very religious. And to that , I and my non-believing mates don't bring it up either. I would discuss it more and I think they would too if there wasn't the fear of offending and ruining a good friendship.
But you do say 'mostly civil discussions' in your reply , so I'm assuming you've had some negative feedback?.
there sometimes is a level of derision , which takes place here a lot.........never lost a friendship , gained quite a lot of new friends.......it's actually the opposite sometimes when I point out the failings of the secular world and how man without a higher power fails and falls into self worship , and that where when you use the 4 E's as a litmus rest on our civilization , it's hard to mount an argument that the inherent goodness of self made man is working....

This is offensive to good people everywhere. Why do Christians want legal protection to state their offensive and hurtful beliefs but want protection from the same sort of judgment from non Christians. ie Religious Discrimination Bill
