Widowmaker 2+1

cycd started the topic in Monday, 23 Nov 2015 at 03:44 pm

I have been wanting one of these for years in the 6'6 to 7'0 range... for medium to semi large surf.

Has anyone got one? surfed on one before? How did it feel underfoot etc?

Which shaper is renowned for them (Wayne Lynch springs to mind)

Cheers

NPJ made for G-Land...then snapped at Boodj. Neil-made fins are now in my Nathan Rose 2 + 1 'dick n balls' model. Built for barrels. Great for barrels.

Michael Mackie makes a fine weapon too.

good questions cycd, will be very interested in the replies, from afar i've seen many shapers produce them, got a feeling a lot of it relates to the dark sciences of fins and fin design. lets see what emerges.

Mick Pierce makes some beautiful 2+1's

I've got a smaller one, a 6'5", but coming in narrow at 18 3/4. It rides good on good waves, but I'd prefer a beefier one.

I've always eyed off ones from Dave Parmenter and Wayne Lynch, and Andrew Kidman makes some wonderful looking models as well having learned the craft from both Dave and Wayne. NPJ makes some great ones too and I've seen plenty of blokes out at solid Ulus on his 2+1s.

floyd Tuesday, 24 Nov 2015 at 10:12 am new

Simon Jones, Dick Van Straalen, Mick Pierce (instagram @easternlight), Cory Graham (instagram @corygrahamshapes) , Phil Grace etc etc ...... really any good shaper should be on them and not forgetting the Campbell Brothers. Dave's instagram @aleutianjuice will get you frothed.

Awesome feedback re shapers guys, thanks for that.

Anyone have any feedback as to how they feel in the water .... would be good to hear for sure.

caml Tuesday, 24 Nov 2015 at 10:35 am new

Unbeatable at g.land back when I was there

cycd Tuesday, 24 Nov 2015 at 10:43 am new

Larger back with smaller siders or vice versa caml ? Benefits of a single in a barrel with a little bit more grip on the rails during take off/high lines etc would you say?

In my mind im thinking/imagining that I wouldn't want the two sides being too large to throw the single out/take over so to speak

caml Tuesday, 24 Nov 2015 at 07:47 pm new

Suprise ! You got it

caml Tuesday, 24 Nov 2015 at 07:55 pm new

Suprise= widowmaker . Another slang name termed =is cock & balls

caml Tuesday, 24 Nov 2015 at 07:51 pm new

Suprise=you start a forum on 2+1 widowmaker and when I say there unbeatable at gland u ask if I mean a twin fin with stabilizer ! I can't take you seriously now

cycd Tuesday, 24 Nov 2015 at 07:59 pm new

caml.. not a twinny with a stabiliser, I was asking if you ran with/preferred a large back fin (say 7" +) and small (stabiliser) sides or a smaller back fin (say 6" - 7") with larger sides (like an FCS G3)

Thanks for the feedback

caml Tuesday, 24 Nov 2015 at 08:11 pm new

[quote=cycd]Larger back with smaller siders or vice versa caml ?
Here's what you said cy , sorry for making fun of it anyway .probably a miscommunication there . Ok large rear with smaller in front . I have used every size .front slightly bigger vs dominant with small keels . But yeah you gotta start in the middle range then gravitate either way . I don't know the fcs range so I can't tell you the fin . I can tell you more later but you should be right with the above info from everyone

cycd Tuesday, 24 Nov 2015 at 08:12 pm new

Sweet, cheers again ... prob see you kicking about the west coast shortly

caml Tuesday, 24 Nov 2015 at 08:18 pm new

A single fin medium size & 2 small side bites is a starting point & then you can go from there. Sorry for being cheeky too .

Good old boodji board graveyard eh hehehe ... How long + d's was this shooter Shatner??

Shatner'sBassoon Wednesday, 25 Nov 2015 at 03:31 pm new

The NPJ was 6'7. I'll have a look at my Rosey for dimensions. I took the snap into the factory for him to work off. I remember I got it beefed up. Salvaged the Neil-made fins and use them in it. I'll get a pic of it. It's a bit of a psychedelic nightmare. My mate who glassed and sprayed it was on acid. I think.

Sick weapon. Very pleased.

Hang on, found this. Got shades on?

Well i'll know who you are if I see this in the water at home hahaha

caml Wednesday, 25 Nov 2015 at 03:56 pm new

Yeah boys nice NR but its the fins that matter . The deck doesn't mean much .

Shatner'sBassoon Wednesday, 25 Nov 2015 at 05:49 pm new

The NPJ is probably still in the factory. I gave it to Duttz last year. He was gonna fix it up and use it.

Yeah, it'll still be there!

I have a 8' widow maker and a 9'6" coming. I love the 8 footer at some of the chunky breaks in the south west. I'm not a charger by any means but do like some solid surf. The 8 footer was great up north this year too, although my lack of skill still cost me a few times.

I use a 7 3/4 rear fin and small sidebites. I tried the fcs GX but, while turning more thrustery, I felt it lost some of the projection and speed I like.

I also use a 7' single fin a lot .

Just about to order a 2+1 off NPJ.... anyone else had one, surfed on one with good feedback?

cycd Sunday, 28 Aug 2016 at 11:27 am new

Saw that on Gumtree lostdoggy.... not a bad looking sled. Am actually going to go a little shorter around 6'3 - 6'4 after riding the duo for 9 or so months .... his boards carry a fair bit of volume with the flatísh decks.

cycd Friday, 30 Sep 2016 at 03:47 pm new

How do I upload pics again guys.... new 2 + 1 has been delivered and wanted to post

markxxx Saturday, 1 Oct 2016 at 07:51 am new

I know some use Imgur to upload pics. I use Photobucket, just copy IMG link and paste. Let's see this new NPJ.

cycd Saturday, 1 Oct 2016 at 10:03 am new

Thanks Markxxx .... ive tried this and it wont upload :(

Jump starting this thread...

Just about to order one. Any recent feedback that you’d be keen to share.
Was looking at fins on the futures website, not sure what I should get but I like the Gerry Lopez fin. Only coz it’s his name on it, I know nothing about how it performs... wanker eh?

goofyfoot Monday, 15 Apr 2019 at 08:23 pm new

Dave Parmenter has some epic looking widows

lostdoggy Monday, 15 Apr 2019 at 08:25 pm new

Who's making it?

goofyfoot Monday, 15 Apr 2019 at 08:34 pm new

Bushrat
I think

lostdoggy Monday, 15 Apr 2019 at 08:40 pm new

The artist formerly known as bushrat haha.
Getting any weird stringers or a flex tail?

goofyfoot Monday, 15 Apr 2019 at 08:43 pm new

No mate just pretty standard. Just like the look of his boards. Seems like he really puts a lot of time and care into each one.

goofyfoot Monday, 15 Apr 2019 at 08:44 pm new

I also love the look of his little twin keel boards

morg Wednesday, 17 Apr 2019 at 10:44 am new

Jye Byrnes in Newcastle does nice 2 + 1's he call's Crossbreeds. He has nice 2 + 1 fin sets for them that are worth checking out if that's what you after.

goofyfoot Wednesday, 17 Apr 2019 at 03:47 pm new

Sounds good morg I’ll check it out

Picking up a new Parmenter/Aleutian Juice 2+1 7'3" Friday.

stunet Wednesday, 17 Apr 2019 at 04:02 pm new

7'3"?

Who gets a board that's 7'3"?

simba Wednesday, 17 Apr 2019 at 04:05 pm new

Dont forget to post a photo........what did that set you back FR,?? if you dont mind me asking.

freeride76 Wednesday, 17 Apr 2019 at 04:24 pm new

Mate, it was a complicated deal to be honest......I did some work for a bloke who shapes and glasses so Dave shaped the blank and the other bloke did the glassing as payment, plus I gave him some cash.....it would have come out a fair bit cheaper doing it that way.
I basically paid for a shaped blank.

7'3".........I got addicted to that size after Tom Curren's famous 7'3"'s.

Perfect mid-length size.

It'll be for baby food V-bank peelers and any size waves at any Point when you want paddle power, turn length, authority off the bottom and glide.
Based off templates for boards he made for Jeff Hakman as travel boards.

goofyfoot Wednesday, 17 Apr 2019 at 05:02 pm new

Hey free ride I think you have a 7’6 desert storm yeah? Just curious what you think the differences will be in the way your 2+1 surfs in solid point surf and the ds

I’m thinking they could be pretty similar?

freeride76 Wednesday, 17 Apr 2019 at 05:11 pm new

Maybe, but I very much doubt it.

Not just the length and fin configuration but the DS is thick and glassed heavily; it's a much more heavy duty board for catching the biggest waves I could ride for that size board.
The Aleutian Juice is a different beast with a different remit.

But I won't know that for a while. Haven't even put it under the arm yet.

Been an absolute pleasure of a process, the email exchanges with DP during it were worth the price of admission.

goofyfoot Wednesday, 17 Apr 2019 at 05:46 pm new

Sure thing, sounds exciting.
Hope you get some waves for it shortly.
Chuck a pic up when you get it

velocityjohnno Wednesday, 17 Apr 2019 at 07:45 pm new

Freeride that sounds like an excellent board. 7'3" can go in little waves and get in early on bigger ones. Interesting the Hakman info, I had a heap of mags, pics back in 1998 and got Len Dibben to shape me an 8'1" triple stringer semi gun a bit like a mini version of Jeff's guns. 2+1. Still got it and it's excellent at mowing down distance at size while being able to do mini mal duties if it has to.
Enjoy your board!
