wow -- how good is that seeds song!
a member of the seeds ended up in the source family cult -- they made countless pyschedelic jam records under various names, one of which was yahowa 13.
a docu called "the source family" is on the Kanopy streaming service. It's a free streaming service through libraries. it is really, really good. just join your old uni library or check if the local library offers Kanopy.
quite a few of those proto punk bands mentioned in stu's doco toured sydney in the late 70s/earl;y 80s. saw the kinks, link wray, the troggs (bit of an oversight not mentioning them!), nico (without the velvet underground). wasn't one the MC5 guys living in sydney and playing at the oxford regularly, so i guess i saw one member of MC5.
can you imagine going to a uni dance at ithaca or cornell in 1962 and link wray was the band? fark!
gang of four touring oz soon reprising the "entertainment" album. i prefer their recent "what happens next" , should please the hard-rocking and politically "progressive" swellnet crew. some killer tracks on "what happens next"

Just bought one of these and used the CD ripper Max to load it with flac files. I've never been any kind of audiophile but even using Apple buds the difference between this set up and mp3s through an iPhone is incredible. The other advantage is that you can bypass iTunes completely and store the files on an external hard drive, safe from the thieving bastards.

Sometimes there is bands i love but rarely listen too, then i will revisit them and just fully binge on them.
When i do sometimes some songs with the test of time stand out more than others, and i find new things in the songs or appreciate them in a different way.
For instance IMHO this song is genius and how on earth did they keep it to only 1:55?
Basic but catchy riff with typical Nirvana sound, but then that second guitar lead riff is so cool sounding.
And the lyrics are just perfect, i liked Nevermind's lyrics but they were just miss mashes of cool sounding words or riddles, but here Kurt's song writing has clearly developed to a next level, clever but flows and not forced.
IMHO In-utero is one of the best follow up albums ever, I'm so glad they didn't go more polished and commercial sounding, it's heavier but still progressive.

No need to look up Steve Albini i like a lot of the albums he has produced, although i don't think he always does such a great job, for instance I'm a big fan of early Super Chunk albums but i dont think he did a very good job on "No pocky for kitty" but he totally nailed it with the Pixies "surfer rosa" and Nirvanas "In Utero"
Not really a fan of his bands or his vocals, Big Black, Shellac etc but probably doesn't get enough credit for influence on other bands etc

Wow, I remember that gig well.
In addition to playing on the show, I also teed up the use of a front end loader (through the family earthmoving business) that was used for the media photo shoot. I'll try to dig up the photo, it's here somewhere.
Was a pretty tough place to run a gig unfortunately, and the low ticket price (meant to incentivise people to come down from Adelaide) was probably why it lost money and didn't run again. The live music industry - in particular big events like this - is an unforgiving business.
But, shit! What a lineup of great local (and one interstate) bands.
Dec 28th, 1995. I remember teeing up all of these guys to come down to dad's depot at Gillman (what a pain in the arse!) so we could get the photo. But, it ran as a full page in The Advertiser plus an accompanying article on the other side, so it was good exposure.

totally agree with indo on steve albini. i reckon he totally derailed the adelaide band Lizzard Train's momentum when he produced their Everything Moves album.way too muddy and the lead singer sounded like he was singing in a shed five kilometres away
@Toneranger. I think Albini did good job with Lizard Train's Everything Moves Album. Awesome guitar sound and mix on that one. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Lizard Train derailed their own momentum by wanting to move to Melbourne but the bass player didn't want to go.
yes,agree on the melbourne thing,but that sound produced on that album was a fairly large step away from previous imo.

Re: Lizard Train - I initially came across them because they recorded this album with Steve Albini at Mixmasters, the week before I recorded at the same studio (incidentally, in a band called The Undecided with Andrew P Street). So there was a lot of buzz in the air.
I didn't have much exposure to their earlier stuff and thought Everything Moves was pretty cool.
They were just one of many great Adelaide bands that didn't quite get there.

Always got a pair of Rossi ripples in the wardrobe. Might have to bust them out down the pub today at lunchtime. With shorts of course!
I tried ripples but couldn't pull it off.
Personally I'm a Blundstone guy. Rossi boots had extra cushioning, but felt a little too fancy for me. RM Williams were way out of my league.
As for Albini, best recorder of drums ever I reckon. Weird when you think of Big Black. I can tell if he's recorded an album by that drum sound.
From Jarvis Cocker to Killdozer and all points in-between. Famous, infamous, whatever.
Then again, I'm a drum fan.

One time I was labouring for a bunch of reprobate pisshead bricklayers - is there any other kind ? - and we were having a Chrissy party in the city. You know the time of year when everyone is getting loose and all the work parties are going on at the same time ?
So half of us were all jammed in this big Ford station wagon and getting near the pub , the already lubricated brickies were hanging out of the windows. Pulling up at a set of lights and someone’s yelled “ Check out that blonde chick next to us .”
I glanced over and there’s this sensational blonde girl behind the wheel of this canary yellow Rolls Royce ( May have been one of those super ritzy Mercs ? ) and she’s smiled over . Then someone’s noticed the little head poking above the window on the passenger side closest to us like a little kid .
‘‘Twas Angus Young and the crew lost their minds and started chanting his name. Angus gave this Mick Jagger trout pout smile and the devils horns as the lights changed and they turned away from us.
Bloody brickies went mental.

No, ha ha, Adelaide was ripples. Rossi make the best. We get the naming rights. As I keep saying to my Sandgroping brethren. DBs are akin to 'pasty boots' in my book. Do you need to be a Salada of a certain vintage to get that reference?

Alright, time for some discussion on what yr all listening too. My iTunes inventory is getting a little stale so I'm up for some inspiration.
Currently loving The Drones' album "Havilah".. incredible songwriting and some of the best recorded guitars and drum I've heard in a long time. I'm a little late to the party with this album but it's on high rotation at the moment and will probably stay there a while. I've seen these guys live once (Fowlers, Adelaide) and fortunately they're incredible on stage too. Can't wait to see them again.
