Zeitz's 9.1, the most over scored wave in recent competition? I mean really an imitation Larry Bertleman rail grab? Give me a break, yeh a few points for imagination but where did the rest of the score come from?

Totally agree...... Both of his waves were waaaay overscored.... Worse judging I think I've seen.... Wilson was ripped off....

Agreed but he also did it in round one and also got a 9.77 ????
Personally i think they look good mid turn but then look awkward near he end of the turn.
Im not a fan of either surfer, but i think Jordy got ripped off.
The whole final day was over scored.
Weren't leaving any room if someone actually did something unbelievable.
Been having this discussion elsewhere. Not just the 9.1 but the whole debate on scoring that seems to be prevalent the last 12 months or so. How many people truely take into consideration the WSL criteria when formulating their argument on how a wave is scored. Sorry to use you as an example ID but saying they don't look good is irrelevant isn't it, considering style is not part of the criteria. I guarantee Micros coaching is all centered around criteria criteria criteria. As surfers, we just lean towards what looks good to us, and competitors have been surfing to their emotions
Disappointing to see a final won by a total of 4 maneuvers in 2 waves. Sure they were pretty radical, but they lacked precision and flow. Obviously impressed the judges enough though. Maybe I'm old school, but smooth powerful carving turns seamlessly linked together does it for me.

Aren't all turns judged on how they look?...im not talking a surfers style im just talking about if they are smooth and flow from start to finish?
To me the first stage of those turns look great, but then it hits a stage where it looks awkward and almost out of control kinda of jerky, they don't flow from start to finish.
I think they are only getting scored high because its something rarely seen.
judges = gamemakers, in the spirit of the hunger games but the context of media product.
I'm still not too sure why anybody is interested in this soap opera-lite which is also barely a step above professional wrestling. Sure it's great to see the best surfing but when has pro surfing ever done Joe Average any favours? Quite the contrary.
True Andy, id rather a world without pro surfing.
But when you cant get away from a PC for some reason, its great to watch the world best surfers do what they do.
Professional sports are just another form of entertainment pro surfing is no different. Some people follow it fanatically others like myself just check it out from time to time. No matter the format the WSL as a sport will not grow as fast as surfing as a recreational pursuit. Pro Surfing doesn't do a lot for Joe Average just places people on a pedestal in some circumstances and encourages poor behaviour like seen from the Gold Coast footage over the past few months.
The whole WSL/Surfing Aus/Surfing NSW,Vic,Qld,WA etc is aimed towards looking after self interests the competitive pursuit and the industry not for recreational surfers.
I think it's gotten to the point whereby the judges nominate what style of surfing will score highest and the surfers have to conform or be penalised.
Obviously length of time on rail was the desired approach during Margs.
Shit way to judge a heat though and that's coming from someone that loves that style of surfing.
I'm a massive fan of Seabass's grab rail turns.
