Tips for Tonga?!

How is/was your time in Tonga? What's it like in November/December?

When I was over there I got talking with a guy who'd been living there for a year or two. He said it was pretty good, especially in the North swell off season when you can chase some of the outer reefs off a boat. So basically it's a pretty crap place to visit as a surfer due to its propensity for going flat for a week at a time, but it's good if you live there.
Just found out I'm moving to Tonga for 3 yrs, based in Nuku'alofa. Yeeeeewwww! Keen to hear from anyone who's been on a surf trip to the west coast or who has lived there. Looks like the Kolovai to Ha'atafu stretch has plenty of options for reefy goodness in both winter and summer, and is probably half an hour drive from the city??? My wife and I are keen to have both land transport and a boat, but not sure what the second hand markets/dealerships are like there? Any ideas/advice would be greatly appreciated!
